It's funny.  The humor is predicated on you understanding his job description and the reason for it existing, and knowing the horrific effects an explosion sheathed in metal designed to shard has on a human body, especially in such close proximity.

We can spend our entire lives bemoaning the terrors we inflict upon each other, or we can grimly laugh at the barest whisper of comedy in an otherwise dreary existence and take some solace in the fact that the situation has been resolved in a somewhat satisfactory manner, unlike the countless similar cases that occurred in the past and may occur in the future.

We don't laugh because we gain joy from the girl's suffering.  We laugh because sometimes it's the only thing keeping us sane.

Stuff your indignation, sir.

Without indignation this website will disappear.

It's not random and unpredictable. It's based on the spin of the earth, which is affected by all sorts of things such as rapid movement on the surface.

Somehow, extra leap seconds seem to happen whenever a hot new celebrity sex video surfaces.

52,070,040 + 1 or 2... you forgot about leap-seconds.

Didn't forget them.  I just one who believes they should be abolished.  Too unpredictable, and causes far more problems than it solves.

And if you live in the Northern Hemisphere, I will laugh when you are bundled up in August.

/might take a few hundred thousands years, but I will still laugh
//have to go at some point and get evaluated for autism. I thought I was just weird. . .

Once the leap seconds start adding up to an hour or so, then add an hour or so.  To keep adding and sometimes subtracting a few miliseconds to each day following a random unpredictable pattern makes no sense.

It's not really "random," inasmuch as the wobble of the earth is "random" Every once in a while, the astronomers-that-be decide that we've gone off a little and to avoid adding whole minutes (when we already know what happens with just the hour shift during DST) they just add a second here and there, and it's not "to each day," it's only during the New Year, where they'll delay the year for a second or two. The addition/subtraction of seconds to EACH day doesn't really happen regularly, but only with major events (I think the earthquake that cause the Fukashima disaster slowed earth's rotation by a fraction of a second).

All humor is based on the misery of at least one party, albeit different grades.  All people were children at one point, and could still be considered children based on relative view points.

All you're doing is drawing an easy and arbitrary line, yelling "THIS FAR!!! NO FURTHER!!!" and pretending you're somehow better than everyone else.

I think the root of the reasoning behind imprisoning is society doesn't know exactly how far it's own culpability goes in the crimes committed by an individual.  If we ever develop social science to the point we can precisely assign blame for crimes, we would be a lot more morally free to perform capital punishment.

In cases like this, it does seem a little ludicrous to think society might be in any way responsible for the rape of a child, but I believe the general unformed feeling is to give the criminal the benefit of the doubt on the matter.

most convicted murderers would cut their own throat before harming a child.  There are things you don't do, even when you are the scum of the earth.  The brief time I spent in jail(DUI) was educational.  From the most "respected" man down to the prison biatch, all agree children are sacrosanct.  If this guy is convicted, the AB will give a membership out to the guy who ends him.  Extra points for making him suffer first.  89 cents may buy a bullet, but an unlocked door is free.

You know what, if you want to laugh at the headline, laugh at the headline, but I'm growing so farking tired of people hiding behind this "OMG if I didn't make utterly tasteless jokes about this I'd spend all day crying about it" bullshiat.  You have (as far as we know) no connection to this girl or this situation and while it's horrific, the circumstances were not driving you insane with grief.  I'll even go out on a limb and say that had this headline not been created you would not even have knowledge of it happening.

Just admit the truth: it didn't happen to me or mine, so it doesn't actually seem real, so its ok to laugh.  This gallows humor excuse is getting worn.

So how were you "dealing" with this particular tragedy before someone broke through the immense pressure of it by making a joke about it?

Look, the fact is I don't care either way...it's a horrific tragedy, but I also don't get offended by jokes since in the end they don't have any bearing on whether this happens or the girl recovers or the man goes to jail.  But trying to convince people that you simply must laugh because otherwise you'd be rocking back and forth sobbing because you're just that damn sensitive to this story you never even heard of before ten minutes ago is extremely disingenuous and is just an easy out that keeps you from saying "I laughed heartily at an autism/rape joke"

Fair enough, but that's not what I was attempting to say. For people WHO HAVE LIVED THROUGH IT, humor is often the only way to deal, so people who say "You're being disrespectful because you wouldn't if it happened to you" are just as ridiculous as people who make snap judgments otherwise. I was at the scene of the double homicide of two very good friends of mine, and cracked a joke about how the last time I'd seen one of them alive two days prior she was singing, "If you're going through hell. . ."

To come down on someone for making a joke of a horrible situation is just as disingenuous and disrespectful for the people who are just trying to deal with nonsensical tragedies in their lives. I'm sure my friend was cracking up at the joke, at the same time as she was cussing out the detective who bungled the investigation.

/we are all human. Nothing human is foreign to me.
//and yeah, for that instance, cracking jokes seemed like a much better way to handle the situation than collapsing into a heaping pile of sobs, which is what I REALLY wanted to do, but I had restaurant staff looking up to me and my then-husband to be leaders in a very farked situation. But that's not the situation here in this Fark thread where we're all safe and sound, away from the situation which happened to people we do not know.  Gallows humor is a genuine thing...but like everything else that has a specific purpose, it's been over used and diluted to the point where people use it as an excuse to make joke about ANYTHING and EVERYTHING at ANY TIME.  A situation like the one you were in sounds like a genuine emotional gallows humor response. But "hey, I read this article and it mentioned rape and autism...how can I make a joke about it for Fark and up my submission count" doesn't seem like someone's who's just barely holding it together emotionally, wanting to collapse in sobs about this story.

Speaking from experience, sometimes you have to crack a gallows humor joke about the horrible things humanity is capable of, like this.

Otherwise, you end up eating a bullet because of what you see and know about.

Thank you for missing everything I wrote about this subject.  I understand what the theory and concept is behind gallows humor.  I just don't buy that every time someone makes a rape joke, autism joke, dead baby joke it's because they're so overwraught with pain over the situation that if the don't joke abou it they'll collapse.  The key word in your statement is "sometimes".  I have to reiterate that I'm not offended by this joke, just because...well...I'm not...I just don't really honestly believe that it was necessary to make the joke because everyone in here was so broken up about this autistic girl being attacked that someone had to break the  silence and relieve the pressure. My point is that I think "I'm just laughing so I don't cry" has become a tired excuse that people use when they're called out on doing something offensive to someone else.
