You'd think that after 1500 years since the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, they would have gotten around to it by now.

I like how leaking info 'devastated the Vatican' but decades of raping children and covering it up was just swell.

Better pope, same corrupt, bullshiat church.

Pope Francis overhauled the laws that govern the Vatican City State on Thursday, criminalizing leaks of Vatican information and specifically listing sexual violence, prostitution and possession of child pornography as crimes against children that can be punished by up to 12 years in prison.

Wait, they criminalized leaks of Vatican information? What if that information is important for people to know, like covering up child molestations?

/"up to 12 years in prison" seems pretty weak for sexual violence, prostitution and possession of child porn

A study from the 90s at The Catholic University of America (Dr. Glen Johnson, I believe). showed that Catholics are more likely to perceive anti-Catholic bias in media articles even if no bias was present.

So, yeah.

Probably because someone pointed out to him after his comments on gay marriage being child abuse that actually abusing children probably was, too.

I'm an atheist, and I was raised Catholic, and there's a whole lot of reasons to be anti-Catholic.  It's a "church" that has its own country, and has a huge amount of influence in many third-world countries where it gets to dictate laws that affect human rights and health care.  They have had slaves in Ireland up into the 1980's, and have worked for decades to cover up abuse by their leadership, silence critics, fight prosecution, and just flat out doing everything they could to prevent exposure and liability rather than deal with the problem.   On top of all that they make billions and don't have to pay taxes, then try various financial moves to move money from parishes that are liable for huge claims so they don't have to pay out.  It's despicable.

It doesn't take very many bad apples to ruin it for everyone. The Catholic church has more then enough bad apples at this point, obviously.

You know that your factual error makes your point completely invalid right?  They had slaves in Ireland up to 1996, not the 1980s.  You deprived the Church of 16 whole years of slave-owning, and you didn't even compensate it for its loss.

The Church put themselves in a position where they have become a punch line of a lot of bad jokes. It's like an alcoholic complaining about all those hateful people making jokes about them being a lush. If you don't like the bad reputation the Church has, put pressure on it to clean up its image and earn back the world's respect instead of whining about bias.

You know, that whole being judged by your works thing. I think I read it in a book somewhere.

Lovely work, pairing up the criminalization of info-leakers along with child molesters within their ranks.

Info leakers can get as much as 8 years, while pedophiles can walk away after a 5 year sentence.

Well, it's good to see where their priorities are.

Not so much the kid raping as the Mafia-like actions to hide the kid raping from anyone else. Had they demonstrated an ounce of remorse, instead of building shell companies to hide the funds of archdioceses, attempting to hush the parents by offering them cash, slandering anyone who tried to bring their kid-raping priests to justice, and giving sermons that blamed the victims, I think folks would've been somewhat more forgiving.

Far be it from me to insert facts from tfa to point out the headline is trolling fail....

Okay, I lied.    I'm doing it!

Dalla Torre stressed that just because such acts are illegal now doesn't mean they were legal before. It merely means that, 100 years ago, child pornography was not specified as a crime in either the Italian legal code or the Vatican's.

They just clarified existing law and made explicit the general "being bad people" laws that were on the books before, and buffed the penalties a bit.
