(The Atlantic Wire)   We should really stop calling Steve Grand the first openly gay country music star, because a) he's not the first country musician to come out and b) with only one self-financed Youtube video to his name, calling him "a star" is a bit of a stretch   (theatlanticwire.com) divider line 30

Is K. D. Lang considered country?

Xythero: Is K. D. Lang considered country?

MUsically? Yeah, "culturally"? Not sure Nashville claims her, or Melissa Etheridge, but still I think given the fact that people are more accepting (or even ecouraging) of Lesbianism, it would be fair to put an out gay male country singer in his own category

Either way, his song All American Boy is rather good.

Alternative Country at best.

No one is "openly black". Except for maybe James Brown. Or Louis Farrakhan! Louis Farrakhan is OPENLY BLACK!

Kenny Chesney should have come out a long time ago.

Wow, really cool video.  Reminds me of me and my best friend in my early 20's.

Chely Wright (sp?) was/is a "new Nashville" major country star that came out (new as in the last 10-15 years)

How in the holy shiat is this guy "country?" Sounds like a slightly less screechy Bret Michaels.

I like the slow camera pans across his half-naked body.  It is nice to see men's bodies getting objectified like women.

I've never heard of the other star, Drake Jensen, they mention in the article...

*checks wiki page*

And he has no albums which have even made the US country charts and his only single topped out at #16 on the European Country Music Association charts, which is something I did not even know existed.

I'm gonna go ahead and stick with there being zero male country singers who are out, which is completely irrelevant to whether or not I would like their music.

So country music is like porn, where if you appear in a single video, it makes you a "star"?

Smeggy Smurf: Xythero: Is K. D. Lang considered country?

K.D. Lang's first album is 1,000 times more country than anything they play on "country" radio today. Anything now considered alt-country is way more country than anything they play on "country" radio. But to say that K.D. Lang isn't a country singer is ridiculous. Her new stuff isn't really country, but Absolute Torch and Twang is a fantastic country record.

Also, this is not country. It's a pop rock ballad.

Totally hit on me when I was 16. He was wearing his Chris Gaines cap too.

Can supposed 'real' country music even be called country music anymore? Shouldn't it be called musical jingoism, or something?

Cute kid.
I get the emotional pain he's sharing , but I'm a little uncomfortable with the"unrequited love for the str8 guy" cliché.
Maybe in the next video he'll actually hook up with the man of his dreams but get popped in the nose as soon as they've finished.

I only have the radio on when Mrs. Smurf is driving.  She likes the modern pop crap.  Myself I like guys like Jackson Tayor and the Sinners, Jerrod Birmingham, Kyle Park, Old Crow Medicine Show, Blackberry Smoke and so forth.  That's country and it's modern.
