Both sides also shouted occasional insults at each other, though the anti-abortion protesters spent long periods on their knees with rosary beads in hand.

FTFA: Another lawmaker, Tom Barry, grabbed a female colleague, Aine Collins, by the hips during a 3 a.m. amendment vote and pulled her on to his lap. Barry said he'd intended it to be a joke after Collins noted how cold the debating chamber had become with the automated heating turned off.

"where's my heating box?"

FTFA: Kenny has vowed that any lawmaker who opposes the bill from his own conservative party will be expelled from his parliamentary bloc and be barred from running as Fine Gael candidates at the next election. So far just four of his 74 party lawmakers have defied him and suffered the punishment.

I love how brazen that is.

The bill spells out rules for permitting abortions deemed necessary to save a woman's life in a predominantly Catholic country that otherwise outlaws the practice. The government drafted the bill in response to the death last year of a hospitalized woman who was suffering a protracted miscarriage and pleaded in vain for a termination.

According to this article, the baby also died; the abortion request was made because the baby was, effectively, already lost. The request was denied because, at the time, the foetus still had a heartbeat.

Remember: the Catholic church and abortion opponents want women to die if they suffer medical complications from pregnancy even if no chance exists that the baby can survive.

I passed by Dail Eireann yesterday to have a look at what was going on. It was interesting - all of the pro-choice demonstrators were attractive young women, and all of the pro-life demonstrators were crazy old biddies carrying Rosary beads and pictures of aborted fetuses

There was a horrific case in El Salvador recently where a woman was suffering potentially life threatening complications with her pregnancy and due to a severe birth defect the fetus literally had no brain. Their courts basically said as she wasn't in the process of dieing she had to continue the pregnancy until she was in critical condition before she could have an abortion.

The doctors eventually c-sectioned her and put the fetus in an incubator for a few hours until its heart stopped.

Remember, these are people who believe in "miracles."  They really think that people can be spared from death when they lack a functioning brain.   I wonder where they got so much empathy for the brainless...

It's really, really sad that them "easing up" on the rules looks exactly like the United States' dumber parts' attempts at restricting them.

The Irish do love a good protest. Seems everybody in the world, except for the US, will protest, and at the very least, damn near riot, over things that their government does. Americans are way too obsessed with keeping demonstrations peaceful. We're just a bunch of farking sheep, consoling ourselves with our guns, telling ourselves that we're not docile little lambs, because we've got guns. Meanwhile in Europe they'll throw tear gas canisters back at the farking cops, in addition to setting cars on fire and other delightful mayhem.

That's true, but it's only because they're terrible people.

There's a few things going on here:

- Electoral politics are part of the American national myth. A large percentage of the population can't fathom any sort of active resistance to government force because the government is "government of the people, by the people, for the people."
- Hippy mythology still pervades much of the progressive left. You only find people willing to actively resist government force on the far left. Solidarity goes out the window and our progressive "allies" abandon us the first time we push back, no matter how mildly.
- The US intelligence and police apparatus is constantly involved in attacking any radical movements, again no matter how mild. It makes it very hard to organize much of anything.
