So, doing a bit of genealogical research myself, I can go back about 9 generations to around 1700 CE. Assuming that generations sort of even out, that would mean by 27x great-grandparent would be born around 1100 CE.

Not sure about the rest of you, but 27 generations removed is hardly "Hey, cousin, can I crash on your couch?" close.

/Besides, almost anyone of European ancestry is related to Charlemagne and almost anyone of Asian ancestry is related to Genghis Khan.

It wouldn't be a cousin to all six of Brad & Angelina's kids.  They picked up half of them from souvenir shops in countries they visited. Only a couple are biological children.

Yes, and the baby will be even more inbred, weak-featured and pale-pink-skinned than Charles.

27th cousin? So what? I'm sure a good percentage of farkers here are more closely related to the "royal baby".  And even if that is true:

I'd be surprised if most people with European ancestry weren't 27th cousins. 27th cousins just means that your ancestors were generally from the same area of the planet.

The author sounds like they'd be shocked to find out we're all related to each other.

Let's all just go as far back as possible and see how related we all are. Who the fark cares?

I'm sure I'm a 27th cousin to half the people on Fark.

i have 1st cousins and 2nd cousins i've either never met and never well, or i've vowed never to have anything to do with again. 27th cousin? may as well be from mars or something.

You have over 67 million ancestors 27 generations back.  That's a massive chunk of the maybe half a billion world population at that time, especially considering how hard it was to travel.  I would expect most people of similar ethic ancestry to be related at that point.

I will be a 15th cousin.   I never get invited to any of the stuff.  Mom, Dad, Gran, Gramps, the same.   Great Grandma used to, but didn't have enough money to go back to the old world.  nineth cousin to the Queen, youngest child of some count.

Not really. Pedigree collapse happens at some point and the same individuals occupy different points in the tree, reducing the overall number of ancestors.

Ricardo Montalban might not have been East Indian either but at least he had some ethnicity to him and didn't look like someone who could have been replaced by Hugh Grant.

I really wish they'd given the new Khan more screen time. I think Cumberbatch could have been scary as hell that was more dialogue and less action.

SPOILER!!!1!

2013-07-11 12:17:02 PM
27 generations, for reference, means basically the 1300s, i.e. the European plague years.

If you have to go back that far to find a common ancestor, I'm pretty sure you're  less related than average, not more.  As pointed out, that's 130 million ancestors each (2^27) in a time where the population of the entire planet was about 400 million.  Even if your line collapses significantly that's still a pretty high probability of shared entries somewhere in the tree.

Also:

according to an online genealogy resource.

So... basically made up anyhow.  Fake relationships with celebrities and historical figures is how those guys make their money, and the ones that don't are user-generated, so...

I know you're just joking around but the fact that he's actually Khan adds little to the story. Young Kirk and Young Spock don't know WTF he is because they never met him in their lame as time line, the target audience of teenagers wouldn't know WTF he is, it was just a wink to the Trekkie audience that they don't really care about anyway. So I didn't spoil much of anything.

That's the point.  Though I guess a better way to say it is there were 67 million sperm that combined with 67 million eggs that made your ancestors 26 generations back.

Yeah, that's just stupid. Go back far enough and we're all related. I'm directly descended from Jasper Tudor. Do I htink it's cool? Sure! I get to read about my greatx15 grandpa in history books. Does that make me special, or able to get an audience with the Queen? Nope.

Since I'm not an expert on these things, just kind of curious, has anyone crunched the numbers on how far removed you can be from any other person on the planet?  Like, is 27th somewhere near the upper limit?
