Chihuahuas? What were they bred for? Hors d'oeuvres?

They should breed one that can stand being locked in a car for more than 30 seconds.

Aside from the over bred ultra-minature pissing balls of neurosis you see in today's purse warmers; chihuahuas are decent dogs. They'd probably be good at pest control and raising alarms.

Yeah, chihuahuas were on the menu in central America...They're small, nice house companions, can alert you to intruders, they can kill vermin going for your corn crop, they eat any leftover garbage you might happen to have; and in an emergency you can make a terrific mole with them.

What's not to love?

I feel bad for the various dog breeds that are bred specifically for their "cute" defects that result in health problems.
Their owners need to have random body parts broken, maybe they can be adorable amputee porn stars.

One of my dogs is a smaller, softer version of the "mutt from the Bahamas" in the second picture. When you take in a mutt pup from a shelter, you take in... American history...

Ah yes, the Chihuahua... The breed that came about as a result of native South American coyotes who, bored one night and having the weirdest boners at the time, decided to hunt down rats and fark them instead of eating them.

Pugs that aren't too fat can breathe fine. Sure she snores some (though not all that much), but that doesn't mean she can "hardly breathe". She can breathe fine.

Maternal ancestry, of course, can't tell the whole story, Savolainen says, and mitochondria trace the genetic lineage only through mothers.

And they wait until almost the end to say this? Here's what this means: The entire article is overblown. This research means something but not as much as you think.

Let's compare the people and the dogs: People in the Americas show a lot of post-Columbian DNA because some of the Indians coughed themselves to death. But when you look specifically at the mitochondrial (mother's) genetics you see more (not 100% but noticeable) native contribution. Whether they look native, whether most of their DNA is native, or if they look black or white, more New Worlders have native mtDNA than you'd guess. Validating stories about native women going out of their way to find a newcomer to marry.

Similarly then if the dogs were not ready for our diseases either  (I didn't know that) then it's not surprising there's still something left over from pre-Columbian genetics but not their entire DNA.

That's the exaggeration that's bugging me.

They should have tested some Carolina Dogs (a/k/a the American Dingo). They're supposed to be a remnant population of Indian dogs gone feral, then rediscovered in some very rural remote areas of the South. They look like this.
