They had better NOT f*ck up that hallway fight scene. That shiat is right up there with the "They Live" alley fight.

I think this remake is the best idea ever.

Having Tyler Perry direct would have been better but hey, Spike Lee was my third (2nd being Uwe Boll) choice in the 'Hey Hollywood it's 2013, we have the Internet and have all seen the original and don't feel ANY desire for a remake' reality that 'Let the Right One In' and 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' should have taught them.

Keep f##king that chicken Hollywood, bang away.

Oldboy has been in my Netflix queue for, I don't know, maybe a couple of years now.  I guess I should actually go watch it...

Would be nice if Netflix streaming had anything other than a dubbed version.  The dubbing sort of ruins the whole mood.

Actually, that's one of the best bits of advice I've seen on Fark. It's a really original, fun movie that will catch you off guard and surprise you with its amazing cinematography and overall scope. So go watch the original and enjoy cause dude totally vagina reams his own daughter, eats a live octopus and hammer beats a dozen dudes all over incest.

Spoilers. (wrong place, sorry).

Saw the original, enjoyed the ZOMGWTFBBQ it leaves you with, and couldn't they please let this flick well enough alone?

Dust: I swear Netflix had this subtitled. Or maybe I got the DVD at the time. Either way, no dubbed version should be tolerated.

Well, I'll be a bit more objective here than the usual shiat on everything crew. The original is amazing. This remake is totally unnecessary. However, if one were to not know there is even an original movie to begin with, this trailer actually does make it look like a pretty kick ass flick. The cinematography looks phenomenal, the acting actually looks pretty stellar too. I'd see it.

So...(semi-spoilers)
...are we just to assume that his daughter and he are both blind and/or have amnesia?

How can this be a "remake" with the same story if he can see her being interviewed while he is still in that room?

Also, I will go to see it just to watch Bran from the Goonies eat a live octopus.

Was wondering about that myself. Though my memory of the movie is kinda hazy I thought that was a key plot point.

Meh.  Just go to Youtube and watch the hammer fight.  I found the rest rather dull.  Not as boring as Sympathy for Mr Vengeance, but still not as exciting as hyped.  It was a lot like Audition in that regard...

I think the most interesting/telling thing is that remaking a movie that came out a decade ago is the only job that Spike Lee can get at this point; that's usually a sign that you've burned all your bridges in Hollywood.

/Final step is making a movie based on a novelty song.

The remake was great!  It was so stupid that it gave us "NO NOT THE BEES" and a guy in a bear suit punching a woman.  That is classic stuff.

lol.

The original wasn't perfect but the ending was pretty scary and Christopher Lee was great in it.

because the girl that was shown being interviewed was not really his daughter.

Wow, yeah, wish I'd read this before going and watching it.  The voice actors were... less than stellar.  I was really surprised it was dubbed, almost everything I see on Netflix is subtitled.

Luckily I missed this... not that those words in that order would have necessarily made a lot of sense prior to seeing the flick.

The person being held is not actually his daughter, and the interview he saw was staged and injected into the feed of TV channels he watches.

No, that was not part of the original film.  That's just my guess.

The poster comparing Spike Lee to Uwe farking Boll and Tyler farking Perry is insane. Spike is a provoking dude, and some folks might not like his views on race, but he does some marvelous films. Yes, even ones not focused on race. Exhibit A: The 25th Hour.

In fact, if when this Oldboy remake sucks, it won't be because of Spike Lee's direction. It will be because it gets cut to death in post-production after the suits get their little survey cards back from pre-screenings.

He's a technically proficient filmmaker, but he doesn't seem to be a good fit for Oldboy. I personally think a Joe Carnahan or Lexi Alexander would have been a better choice, as they both have a certain flair that Lee doesn't, which I think is necessary to capture the spirit of Oldboy.

Now, that's at least a criticism of Lee's style without an asinine comparison to junk directors that I can understand. Lee has never shot a film like this one.

I'm trying to think of people that understand the revenge flick narrative well enough to turn it on its head as Oldboy does. Tarantino comes to mind immediately, but he might have a style too over-the-top for this film. As strange as it might sound, Oldboy is understated in some weird way that I can't quite explain, daughter-vagina-reaming aside.

Paul Greengrass might be an interesting choice. Or even the dude that shot Irreversible, which sort of reminds me of Oldboy in some ways.

Greengrass would be excellent! That's a good pick. Gaspar Noe is the guy who directed Irreversible, also a good pick.

Ultimately I think you're right though, the success or failure of this film probably isn't going to come down to the director alone, though I think a better-suited director may have been able to overcome the obstacles posed by the studio executives.

Of course, for all I know Lee knocked it out of the park. But the trailer revealed way too much and seemed a bit sterile.

I'm going to wait a long while on this one.

I love the original 3 movies, had gotten them all thanks to Atomic Comics before they went tits up. The only way this movie could look worse is if it had Shia Lebouf as the prisoner or Jaden Smith anywhere near it. As it stands I'm going to wait till reviews come out and I might end up pirating it from redbox.

Mostly because of Spike Lee is helming it  and his only decent movie was Inside Man*. The only good thing I see from this trailer is it doesn't have "A Spike Lee Joint" on it, just the 40 acres and a mule. So hopefully that means he couldn't or didn't touch the story too much, if he did... fark pirating it, I wouldn't waste the 700mb on it then, even with terabytes available.

I thought the original was brilliant. When I heard about the remake, I thought it was a terrible idea.

As penance, I think we should now allow the Korean's to re-make "Fight Club" and we'll pretend we don't know the twist.

Don't know what everyone is so upset about. Looks entertaining. Plus, Spike Lee is usually pretty good with movies he doesn't write himself (Clockers, 25th Hour, and Inside Man were all very well made.)

He might be a douchebag, but he knows how to make visually interesting movies. Just keep him away from the rewrites.

Eshy: Really? You're gonna say Do The Right Thingwasn't a good movie? Really?

Yes really.

I didn't watch it when it came out (too young to care about anything not TMNT) and I didn't grow up in a city so maybe I view things differently, but to me it isn't the great movie that people hype it up to be. A bunch of people act like assholes to each other, a cop kills a black kid, neighborhood goes apeshiat, sets fire to a restaurant, blocks/attacks firefighters from doing their job so they turn the hoses on them to keep a mob looking for blood away from them, all for what? not having pictures of black people on a wall of Italians in a Italian restaurant? All the crap could have been avoided if the wall just said "Famous Italians" instead of "Wall of Fame" then just find a famous black italian and the picture would be on the wall.

Good movie? maybe to others but like I said I didn't see it till long after release so to me just looked like a caricature of a 80's black neighborhood, expected to see a camera go too wide and catch "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka!" being filmed as well.

Good lord, but that is an incredible, but intensely wrenching, movie.  And much like Oldboy, saw it once and really enjoyed it, but not sure if I want to watch it again.  That said, I will watch Oldboy again rather than see some remake just so we can watch white people instead of other kinds of people...
...but I probably won't ever watch Irreversible again.  Too tough, especially as a woman.

I'm not interested in a remake, but if the DVD includes a special feature about the test screening groups, showing their horrified reactions and suggestions on how to make the story more "audience friendly", I'd totally eat that up.

/"Well... what if the REAL twist is that the bad guy SAYS the girl is the man's daughter, but it turns out she really ISN'T because the bad guy grabbed the wrong girl because he tried using Apple Maps to find her house? And then the man and the girl ride off into the sunset after winning a 100 million dollars in the Lottery and they send the guy's REAL daughter a pony? I think that would be much nicer."

Uhhh no.  The may have SOME twist, but they CANNOT have the twist from the original.  Not only do they show his daughter, as an adult, on TV so that he can see her, there is a brief scene where they have her bound and are threatening her life.

Maybe that's not his daughter.  Regardless, they have changed it.
