I've heard this since the Carter administration when holes in the ozone layer were causing global warming and acid rain. Due to global warming Florida was supposed to be gone by 1982. Won't somebody think of the alligators???

I'm sure the new gulf areas will pick up the slack in greenlight worthy material.

You guys worry too much. Millions of displaced Floridians combined with a global economic collapse would provide *plenty* of greenlight material.

Greenlights about Florida would still be possible at least 100 years after Florida's destruction.

We didn't have global warming in the 80's silly. It was the "tall hair" fashion wave, Aqua Net, crack and aids wiping out the human race back then.

Acid rain and ozone holes were totally a myth concocted by scientists trying to get more funding. It's not like mankind did anything to prevent or reverse it. Now leave me alone while I drink my delicious chlorofluorocarbon juice

I've heard this since the Johnson administration when global cooling was going to bring on a new ice age, lower sea levels, and destroy civilization as we know it.  Won't somebody think of the camels?

Thanks, Pud, now I feel older.

Sea ice melting does not appreciably contribute to sea level rise, as its mass is already compensated for.

I think the ice shelf is on land. The calf is floating, but if the whole ice shelf started to float, that would be the bad thing.

We can reattach this iceberg. We just need some ig glue.

2013-07-10 05:10:35 PM
Never mind the fact that the article predicts about a 10 foot rise in sea level. Most of Florida is WAY more than 10 feet above sea level. We might lose the Keys and part of the Everglades. That's about it.

If they're already in the water.  The issue is how fast the glaciers are scooting down the valleys to get into the ocean.  If the glaciers put icebergs into the ocean faster than new ice accumulates at the top of the glacier, then the ocean level goes up.

Ice melting displaces zero water if it's floating (*).  But sea level does rise when iceberg calving allows previously land-based ice to slide into the ocean.  A single calving event like this doesn't change sea level much.  But a bunch of calving events over decades, as an ice sheet disintegrates, will.

(*) Technically ice melting into the ocean changes sea level due to density differences between fresh and salt water, but this is a small effect.
