(The News & Observer (NC))   Remember how Jason Collins was hailed as a hero for being the first openly gay NBA player and how teams would be lining up to sign him to show their support? Um, yeah, about that   (newsobserver.com) divider line 38

Yeah older players that were never very good get signed all the time!

probably a play to get a few more paychecks.

That's not what I remember at all, subby.  I remember most people expecting a lot of lip-service support to be paid, but no actual signing.

This. I remember a lot of people saying he came out because the attention might get him a contract when his skills no longer warranted one. But hey, octogenarian Juwan Howard got a ring after playing through some 10-day contracts and hitting the court for a few minutes every other game or so. So there's hope. Maybe Dallas or SA will sign him for the extra six times he can send D12 to the charity stripe.

Hell, Miami can always use some big people at the end of the bench in case they run into Indiana again.

My memories as well.  There's a reason he waited until his career was essentially over to go public.

2013-07-10 02:06:03 PM
Wow, you mean teams aren't falling over each other to sign a 35-year-old career backup center who hits about 40% of his field goal attempts, has never been a shot blocker, and averaged about a point a game the last couple of seasons?  That must be discrimination.

2013-07-10 02:12:26 PM
If he can contribute to a basketball team, he'll get a contract, regardless of his sexual proclivities.  Fact is, he could barely get on the floor for the Wizards, and they suck.

2013-07-10 02:12:55 PM
He'll be signed. There are plenty of teams who will need a veteran, cheap center who can play defense. The Nets and the Celtics have both been named as possible destinations, although now that the Nets have re-signed Blatche they may not be as interested.

It's waaaaay to early to talk about a lack of offers for Collins. Beyond Howard we haven't seen many deals for free agent bigs yet. Sometime very soon Pekovic and Bynum's futures will be decided; no one is going to sign Jason Collins until then.

The article itself notes that players like Collins aren't usually signed until around July/August.

And we all know there's no way in hell Stern is going to let the only openly gay player be unemployed.
You heard it first.
1) If a lottery team signs Collins ~ they'll win the first pick in the draft.
2) If Miami signs Collins, DRose is still having acl troubles next year and Hibbert & Detlef team up for a Parks & Rec spinoff.
3) If a contender signs Collins, LeBron plays College football for a year.

Miami should sign him. They need bigs, south Florida is gay friendly and would give them good publicity to go along with back to back championships.

Backup centers tend to hang around during free agency periods. Well, unless you're the Milwaukee Bucks that is, by overpaying for Zaza Pachulia when he has to play backup center for you because a shared starting front court of Larry Sanders and him would be create an offensive black hole the world has never seen before...but I digress...

Approval, but no team yet, for gay player Collins

It'll be nice when a public figure's orientation no longer shows up in headlines.

Yeppers, and as WienerButt noted, Miami is a gay-friendly city. So the guy still has a few options before he becomes an assistant coach somewhere.

Agreed, but we're probably still a few years away from that milestone.

He knew he probably wouldn't be back, that's why he came out. He's no farking hero. There are plenty of athletes that came out when their careers were over. That's all he did.

Gay Player Collins is a very sweet mixed drink.

I remember the craziness of calling him the first openly gay player in major pro sports when he wasn't on a team and wasn't likely to ever be on a team again.

2013-07-10 03:13:43 PM
He's simply not an absurdly amazing basketball player. Sure, he's good; you don't play in the NBA for multiple seasons without being good. But good will merely let you get picked up to ride the bench near the end of free agency as an ideal result. That's probably what will happen here, and it would happen regardless of his sexual orientation.

Killer Cars: Backup centers tend to hang around during free agency periods. What the Bucks absolutely have to do is tank for ping pong balls. There's no other way out of their predicament. They're too good to get very many (if any at all), they're too bad to do jack shiat in the playoffs, and everyone in Wisconsin knows it. There's no future, no direction, and no point in watching a mediocre team spin its wheels going nowhere. There's not even any fun in hate-watching them because, again, they're too good to be watched the same way as the likes of the Wizards and the Bobcats. They're just... there. You don't even see them as the opposing team in other teams' highlights very often.

They can't build normally out of it, because it's freaking Milwaukee and no decent free agent is going to let themselves spend their winters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin without a virtual guarantee of a ring. That path is closed. So they have to go the other way: tank until they draft an absolute deadlock stud that they can force to play in Milwaukee.

But that's the one thing Herb Kohl refuses to do, because he's afraid tanking will jeopardize the chances of getting a replacement for the Bradley Center. Never mind that tanking would signify that at least the Bucks have an actual plan. Which means Milwaukee gets "treated" to 'who the hell is that? How do you pronounce that? Zaza Patchouli Oil?' and another season of either the minimum amount of ping-pong balls or a Round 1 demolition. And every season that happens increases the chances that Seattle shows up to try to take the Bucks away entirely.

Of course, in Seattle, the Bucks would be treated with respect.

It's kind of sad that the first openly gay NBA player wasn't in his first 4-5 years with stats among the top players.  Collins just makes the whole thing look like a cry for attention.

The fact that he sucks should be a cause for concern for any GM.

He'll get signed by a Western Conference contender for the specific purpose of guarding Howard in the playoffs.

You mean hacking Howard 6 times in the playoffs. This guy couldn't guard Dwight when he was actually good.

Anyway, I do remember quite a bit of talk about him being the first "active" player to come out and how huge that was and several days of sports talk debate about gays in the locker room. I also remember thinking calling him "active" was a stretch. "Not retired yet" would have been more appropriate, but of course another retired player coming out would not have been a big story.

Yeah, the Chicago Fire really need to send the Galaxy a very nice gift basket for putting them back into playoff contention.

And now that an NBA thread has been successfully hijacked with MLS talk, let's take some time to say goodbye to our loved ones and watch the universe now collapse upon itself.

When said gay players/actors/whatevers quit having press conferences and interviews and whatever other public (and arranged) coming out activities that a lot of them insist on having, it won't be an issue.

There's also a ton of those older veterans retiring - Grant Hill, Kurt Thomas, Jason Kidd - that'll open a few spots up.

Also, with Kidd retiring, there's no one left playing from NBA Jam.

Well, yeah, nobody's going to sign him just because he's gay.  Playing ability is what's important, not sexual orientation.
