I feel genuinely sorry for Rush Limbaugh listeners. I know a few of these "talk radio all day, Fox News all night" types, and they are neither pleasant nor happy people. I try to imagine what it must be like to go through everyday life with so much paranoia, so much mistrust, and so much spite for anybody possessing opinions that deviate one angstrom from the echo chamber orthodoxy, but this is an abyss that I'd rather not stare into. They've been swallowed up by a maelstrom of anger and fear, and I just feel sorry for them.

Clearly, the problem with Fox News is that they've been trying too hard being Fair and Balanced TM.

Is it too much to hope that Roger Ailes and Rush Limbaugh will begin feasting on one another's flesh like something out of the ninth circle of the  Inferno?

2013-07-10 02:20:00 PM
Fox News justifies their slogans, "We Report, You Decide" and "Fair and Balanced," by bringing on selected guests from the other side -- liberals.

Fortunately, Rush has solved the "you decide" dilemma for the angry and unread (reading "Killing Lincoln" doesn't count): just ignore the parts you don't agree with. This is much simpler than watching either (a) "sensible libs" who just happen to mostly agree with Roger Ailes and (b) punching bags who get their mics cut anyway.

Ahhhhhh ahhhhhh it's funny because Obama once misspoke and said 57 states and that's the strongest insult you could think of. It's even funnier because you appear to believe that a rich performer is inherently smarter than people who make less money. ahhhhhhhhh   funny stuff.

I know, troll and all that, but this comment brings a fundamental difference between Liberals and Conservatives into sharp focus. Conservatives see "Rush makes more money than you" as:

1. an insult
2. proof that Rush is correct (and smarter, and a better person)
3. sufficient defense against any criticism

I've seen a variation of it used quite often here on Fark, where mocking someone for not making much money or implying they flip burgers for a living replaces thoughtful response to whatever was said. It basically breaks down to "I make more money than you so I'm right".

I know you've heard this argument before, but regarding #2: Just because McDonald's sells the most burgers doesn't make them good burgers. They're just crap meant to be consumed without much thought about it. Kinda like Limbaugh's show. Or Fox, for that matter.

According to Joe Muto's book (An Atheist in the Fox Hole), both of those assumptions may be correct, at least up to a point. As much as Fox likes to promote the true believers and weed out the secret liberals, if you can fake right-wing outrage and pull in the ratings, they're perfectly happy.

Rush may also be referring to Papa Bear. Rumor has it there is little love left to lose between them.

By that logic, Oprah Winfrey (among others) is more intelligent and powerful than Rush, Hannity and Trump.

Don't bank on it.  Fox News is filled with rubes, morons and simpletons, but I'm pretty sure she's one of the few hardheaded, shrewd people over there.  She knows exactly what she's doing, and 95% of the time, she does the classic Smirk-Can-You-Believe-These-Liberals-Smirk face while reading what passes for "the news" over at Fox.  She's working the golden goose and she knows it.  Occasional forays outside of the box are, I suspect, carefully-crafted burnishings of a kind of street cred.  When she rips into the Koch brothers and the energy industry, then I'll concede that her days are numbered.  But getting all huffy about maternity leave?  That just gets the Fox News sistes sitting upright and saying, "You tell 'em, honey!" while casting angry glances at the cranky old man on the other side of the living room.

And picking on Karl Rove on election night 2013 was just brain-dead easy.  Everyone in the studio was already drenched with his flop sweat.  He committed seppuku on the air of his own volition.  She just ate popcorn and laughed.

And we have now come full circle...

After years of politicians criticizing Limbaugh, only to apologize and "clarify their statements" the next day, Limbaugh criticizes Fox and apologizes (sort of) for it.

Set to the side the fact that his ratings have been falling and his sponsors have almost completely abandoned him...

If I can't criticize Limbaugh because I'm not making Limbaugh money, then you can't criticize Obama for the same reason.

And no one would believe you if you said that you were.

That's what happened to my uncle after he retired.  He had nothing to do all day, so he took to listening to talk radio and watching Fox News all day.  He became utterly unbearable to talk to about anything for years.  He finally snapped out of it a few years ago.  Not even he could handle Glenn Beck.
