Dancin_In_Anson: What's the big deal?

A: TFA states that they thought the Braves might see it as some kind of personal protest. I can understand this.
B: Not in the article, but relevant anyway: The Braves' 'Hatchet Chop' is still considered offensive by many American Indians, I can see a huge protest by having the team with this perceived offensive display featured.
C: The American Indian group is just pissed because they moved the date, claiming that the Mets are screwing them over.

IMHO, the American Indian group needs to use some Massengil in their sand-filled vaginas. Anyone with a brain would see this as probably a bad time to host an American Indian Appreciation Event. Maybe they should actually be congratulating the Mets on having a little bit of common sense instead.

I thought I'd tell you, privately, that pretty much everybody who isn't a Braves fan thinks that "chop" thing is childish and annoying; forgivable when employed by college football fans but out of place at a major league baseball event. You are aware that many of the Braves games are televised? People see you doing that chop thing. It's embarrassing.

2013-07-10 12:06:08 PM
So they agreed to do something and then took it back? That sounds like an Ind...uh, never mind.

2013-07-10 12:06:41 PM
So t he mets weren't concerned avout offending the native americans with abunch of fans doing the tomahawk chop and what not. They were concerned about offending the Braves by hosting what could turn into a protest against the team?

So they end up cancelling 90% of the event after months of planning and a deposit by the native american group. Indian givers.

2013-07-10 12:07:05 PM
I'm not sure why the Mets want to bring attention to any games against the Braves considering they usually get pummeled by them.

For me it's not so much the chop thing as it is the stupid chanting that goes along with it.

It takes a special type of asshole to be angry at the Mets for their insensitivity when the farking Braves are in town.

That's okay.  Regular season interleague play is a far worse stain on our national cultural heritage than our treatment of the indigenous peoples.

There should be a protest against the team. It's a farking stupid name, karate chop thing, etc.

And the Braves shouldn't be offended - they know as well as anybody the importance of community outreach and engagement in the baseball business.

With this new interleague everyday thing, I had to go and check that it wasn't the Cleveland Indians, who really really need to get rid of that embarassing logo.

There are plenty of sport-related fan-activities that are childish and annoying:

"Who Dat?" (Racist)
Foam booger-bangers.
In fact, just about every foam-accessory ever attached to a major sport has been kitschy and ridiculous. As far as the Axe Chop and accompanying chant are concerned, are they really any different than doing the Wave? They're nothing more than exercises in displaying solidarity and urging on your/ our team to victory. Admit it; they're really only annoying when they're effective, and it seems the whole damn place is doing it.

It's an advertising promo for the team:

It's not even really a Braves thing.  It came along with Deion Sanders from FSU.  It's a knockoff.
