Listen white woman. You don't get to have a say as an authority on what is and isn't racist. You aren't allowed to make that decision. So, shut the fark up and let the people harmed be the ones who say, "no not cool" and be all "ok, now I know where that line is". Or assume you have the slightest bit of say in the matter and give all the sideways looks you want.

Your whole article reeks of white authority. All that's missing is the dick.

"Well, race is a complicated issue." Except, no, it's not. Race is one of the least complicated issues that there is

What's actually complicated is our country's relationship with race, and our utter ineptitude at talking about it.

You'd be able to infer the second point from context of the initial quote if you weren't being a pedantic twat, Lindy.

Old: article.  Really really old: Jezebel middle-class, college-educated white women arguing viciously over which of them is the least racist.

No.

Most gang members in my area are white, and white supremacists.

Or bikers.

Or both.

Modern racism lives in entrenched de facto inequalities, in http://gothamist.com/2009/09/18/williamsburg_bar_hugs_doesnt_want_c.ph p" target=_blank jQuery19103134024996163434="142" sl-processed="1">coded language about "work ethic" and "states' rights," in silent negative spaces like absence and invisibility, and in Newt Gingrich's hair. introducing your black friend as "my black friend"-as a joke!!!-to show everybody how totally not preoccupied you are with your black friend's blackness. It's the gentler, more clueless, and more insidious cousin of a hick in a hood;

Well, besides the actually having a black friend and, you know, not hanging black people from trees part.

But besides all that, it's WAY more insidious that I watch Dave Chapelle than it is if I were to be dragging black guys to their death behind my truck.

Oh gawd this takes me back to college years. People like this author can recover and become non-douches, but usually their stupidity just morphs into another form like anti-vaccination hysteria or something.

Back when I used to post on Deadspin and Jalopnik, I got myself banned from Jezebel in only two posts.  I believe it was because I disagreed with the assertion that something was misogynist though I can't remember what it was.  Probably sports or all men or maybe it was unicorns.

2. "Recreational Slumming."
Wherein privileged people descend for a visit inside the strange, foreign spaces of othered groups. Like, I don't know, IHOP. Or that "scary" bar in the south end. Then they go home again. Catchphrase: "It's soooooo ghetto, but I actually totally like it!"

WTFAYTA?

I love my dive bars.  Or what we call them, "towny" bars.  An actual bartender that can make drinks.

USCLaw2010: Did she get bored writing about Patriarchy?

I'm not sure but it appears she's prejudiced against the hipster race. It's a nice little straw man she built, and the article reads like a freshman debutante that just learned about historical oppression. I honestly expected to see the phrase "umm , slavery and such as" somewhere.

The larger point, that could be better made, is that there a large number of people that pretend to be enlightened and interested in other cultures but don't want them living anywhere near them or marrying their children. These people can also tell you instantly how many times their "minority friend" has been in their house. They are interested in other cultures but only if they conform to a static, "authentic" pigeonhole. They aren't necessarily hipsters but pretend to be well meaning and open minded.

I don't know about all this....

So I watched the Today Show to see if this topic is TRENDING.  I need to know what is TRENDING and who TWEETS about thing to properly gauge sociological, cultural, topical and.... and... well pretty much everything. However I find the Today Show as a cornucopia of all things TRENDING, so I will continue my pursuit of TRENDING and TWEET issues via media. I count on all journalistic endeavors based on the aforementioned TWEET and TRENDING reports, because our lives hinge on such things. So please let me know what's TRENDING in our TREND based society so I'll know whether to breathe in or breathe out, etc.

I'm not going to read this article because I'm afraid it's a piece on hipsters and racism, both topics I've grown weary of.

I'm a white guy, so it's not like I can offer any valid input on what it's like to be a minority in this country. All I can do is continue to treat their ethnicity with the same reverence as I do their hair color. It holds no bearing on what type of person they are.

And the Hipster label has gotten a bit watered down.

I wonder what black people make of teenage white girls who assume that "going black" involves "going ghetto" as well. Suddenly, they assume a license to use the "N-word", and post it all over facebook, along with the most atrocious mangling of the English language into what I have to assume is their concept of "Ebonics", as practiced by the thugs they're dating. Posting about smoking dope, skipping school, and how "hardcore" they suddenly are.

I call this "Ironic racism".

eventually shooting you dead because you look suspicious by virtue of your existence" part.

Okay - this one's easy. If you're a middle aged, suburban white husband/parent - you are a friggin IDIOT.

Pretty simple, right? White suburban men are the bane of all things stupid. They are ALL stupid, clueless, barely-sufferable morons who provide contrast.  What part of this don't you 'get'?

Insidious is being used properly, as a sly way of still being racist but not appearing so. And the part about "having a black friend?" That isn't actually a friend, it's an acquaintance that gets trotted out to prove you "know" the black experience in America.

I appreciate the posters here that point out she says that racism is really simple then basically says only minorities are thugs or live in ghettos.

2013-07-10 11:10:18 AM
This just in: Falling all over yourself to not be racist is now racist. Next up: everything is racist.

Listen up: humans are a tribal people. They define their tribe unconsciously by who looks like them. Those who don't look like them are outsiders. This has been a survival instinct and natural trait of the species since time began.

People are going to comment on the differences, and our brains are going to recognize the differences no matter how un-racist you are. And here's a hint: just noticing and accepting there are differences is not racist. Using those differences as a means of discriminating against a person actively. Just saying "huh, he's black" is not a judgement.

First off, Zooey Deschanel didn't even write that tweet. She retweeted it.

Secondly, that entire article is the author doing exactly what she's accusing others of doing.

2013-07-10 11:11:13 AM
I think it's stupid to pretend we are the same, and thus unable to see colour when we look at people. If you are too afraid to say your black friend is black then you have a serious hang-up about race, and the guy who has a friendship with a black guy that is so relaxed and comfortable they can make what, to an outsider might appear to be, racist jokes to each other is clearly less less worried about it. I think that person is going to be less racist overall, because he won't judge based on colour, nor attempt to oppress. All he's doing is making light of existing stereotypes, robbing them of their power.

JerseyTim: I thought the points under the "Tee-Hee, Aren't I Adorable?" subhead were valid.

No.  They would be valid if the article was bemoaning rich privileged people who pretend to be less privileged.  They would be valid if the point being made was one about class.  However, what makes it hilarious is that in an article decrying casual racism, the author makes the straight forward assumption that poor = ethnic minority.

Growing up in Hawaii, I have known a ton of thugs, hood rats, drug dealers, etc.  And I have known a ton of rich privileged kids who grew up in multimillion dollar houses (not hard in Hawaii, i know) who pretended to talk like/be thugs, hood rats, drug dealers, etc.  The trick is, being Hawaii, both groups were primarily asian.

2013-07-10 11:13:31 AM
So sick of hearing white people talk about white people being racist.

The author of this article is being extremely racist for fashion.
