(Quartz)   The mainstream media is out sensationalizing things again, calling the death of some US honey bee colonies a "beepocalypse" when it should be a "beemageddon"   (qz.com) divider line 68

Monsanto is desperate to prove they are not killing bees with their pesticides but 25,000 dead bees say otherwise http://www.latimes.com/news/nation/nationnow/la-na-nn-bumble-bees-die - in-oregon-20130621,0,1466945.story

This sucks for me because I wanted to get into mead making this year and honey prices have gone bananas.

Actually we may be a crisis point for crops, and not in the sense that we won't have certain crops but that prices will explode due to shortages.

You see, lots of people have no idea that there are roaming bee hives that go from farm to farm pollinating millions of plants across the seasons. Seriously, look it up. They load Bee hives onto a truck and just truck around the country. And they've experienced significant colony loss which has dramatically increased prices.

So yes, we might still have bees but the cost of our food on the plate is going to increase by quite a bit.

Other methods of rebuilding colonies include buying packaged bees (about $55 for 12,000 worker bees and a fertilized queen) or replacing the queen to improve the health of the hive.

$55 for your basic hive?  I may have just found a new hobby.

Avocados are damn near free compared to the price of Ferraris.

Wait... is that good or bad? How many bananas does it take to make one honey?

In addition to the chemicals that may or may not be killing off bee population, there's the non-native bee species that are invading the area. They are breeding with the native bees and crowding them out of their usual areas, and the non-native bees do not pollinate crops.

Just watch; all our efforts into developing drought resistant and disease resistant crops actually end up destroying the farming industry because the creatures that pollinate the plants are killed off by the modifications that let the crops survive different weather conditions.

People are being encouraged to install colonies and wild flowers to help spur bee population growth

I set one in the retention area at the back of my property and seeded the entire thing with wild flowers. Bonus points cause I get a ton of Monarchs stopping as well.

This is one of the reasons why I'm planning on building an apiary and getting bees next year.  It will get me free honey and, more importantly, should help pollinate my garden.

My understanding is that the hive box itself and the gear (smoker, suit, etc) is about another $150 or so. You might be able to find used hives and gear from established apiarists or through Craigslist. All told, it's still not a very expensive hobby, and there's a lot of book-learning available at the library.

You can build one too using kits that bring the cost down a little as well.

I love bees, but I draw the line at having a hive on the property.

No room.

So instead I've got lots of flowering plants.

I see just as many bumbles as I do honeybees some days.

neither makes much sense

apocalypse means out from the hidden (basically.  apo = away from, calypso = hidden... think of when odysseus was stuck on that island with calypso, being lazy and secretive, when he left calypso, it was the apocalypse)

Armageddon is the name of some hill or something where a battle or something is supposed to take place.

we need new end of world terminology.  while apocalypse and Armageddon are both very euphonic, they don't really mean much outside of the christian context of revelation and battle at that hill that's supposed to matter. and, they only mean something in the christian context if you think revelations was properly canonized.  i, for one, do not.  i think revelations is just another gnostic text that has no place in the canonized bible.  it misses the point and appears to be more of a political and ethnocentric work to militarize the 'true' christians and repel anyone else from joining the group.
