Did the brochure tell the airmen to, you know, not rape other airmen?

There's probably an interesting reason behind why prison and the military are just places that society assumes you're going to be raped, and as such doesn't really care.

How about this. If you are a member of the armed forces and you are convicted of rape you get your genitalia blown off. That should get the rate of rape down.

During the Lewis and Clark expedition, one sentry was sentenced to 100 lashes for falling asleep while on guard duty. Maybe they should bring back the lash to enforce discipline.

Well then. I guess we should just safely assume that someone in the air force is a rapist.

Those people are sadistic animals who should move to some Middle Eastern hellhole where honor rapes are the norm. Or they're rapists themselves and like to live vicariously through the rapes of others.

I spent a lot of time in the military, and we never really assumed that rape was going to be part of the day-to-day program.

Sir Hugh Maharggs: Homosexuals can't swim, they attract enemy radar, they attract sharks, they insist on being placed at "the captain's table", they get up late, they nudge people whilst they're shooting. They muck about. Imagine... the fear... of knowing you have a gay man on board a boat, when you retire at night you think to yourself "God... will I wake up and find everybody dead?" You can't run a ship like that.

I think that the idea was initially to bring the whole . . . .episode to an end with as little violence as possible.  It looks like the whole thing went pretty badly and that they are changing the brochure.  Progress, of a sort.

I don't get it...
What's bad about the advice "If the assailant has a gun in your face, protect your life and submit"
It just sounds like military bravado to advise "If the assailant has a gun in your face, fight to the bitter death to protect your anal modesty"

Of course in a perfect world we wouldn't be going around raping everyone we get a chance to...

I dunno. I don't really count progress when they get embarrassed for having a brochure that essentially says "One of your comrades is going to rape you. Just accept it"

2013-07-10 09:05:49 AM
Sounds like it basically says 'do what they say, don't fight back, and you won't get hurt as bad or killed'. Same advice given to all potential victims of violent crimes, especially late night clerks and bank tellers.

2013-07-10 09:06:42 AM
The advice does seem pretty commonsense and practical.  It's victim-blaming only if it says "it's your own fault if you fight back and die" or "it's your fault for being so attractive in the first place".  Yes, it'd also be a good idea to circulate a "rape is bad" brochure.

I'd have to see the document.  I don't think that rape is considered a given, nor that the victim shouldn't take actions against the attacker once their safety is secured.  Rape prosecutions have a terribly checkered history of being concealed, disbelieved and all of that, but IIRC from my Army days rape was still considered a crime.

fireclown: but IIRC from my Army days rape was still considered a crime.

Which doesn't really matter when the response to reports of rape and sexual harassment are often either to try and shut the victim up or rape her again.

The problem here is that the military's rape and cover-up problem is so firmly established at this juncture that every single thing that gets shaken out like this is just further evidence to pile on top of what we already know: the military doesn't take sexual assault seriously, views victims as the problem in the case of rape and has virtually no interest or capability to properly handle cases of sexual assault and harassment.

It doesn't matter what else the brochure said becasue we don't need it to prove anything. We already know there's a huge problem, the only thing the rest of the contents in the brochure could possibly do is make it look even worse.

2013-07-10 09:16:54 AM
The brochure said, if there is a weapon consider not fighting back.

One thing about this: The article writer and the comments all seem to engage in quite a bit of victim blaming themselves.

Not fighting back, particularly in the face of a weapon, does not mean you give consent and does not mean it's not rape. It sure as hell isn't our place to blame her after the fact for not putting up enough of a fight, or for making the judgement during the crime that she'd be better off not fighting back.

I don't know if the brochure is giving good advice or not. I do know this attitude by the article's write and many of the comments in the article that not fighting = consent is disgusting, misogynistic victim blaming.

You read the whole brochure?  All I got was two sentences.

And I wouldn't assume the military was embarrassed.  They just got a strongly worded letter from a Congresscritter and said, "Fine, we'll trash the brochures that your constituents paid for.  Ain't our money."

2013-07-10 09:22:23 AM
The brochure also suggested that if an individual is accosted in a parking lot, "consider rolling underneath a nearby auto and scream loud. It is difficult to force anyone out from under a car."

Wow, that really IS objectionable. Oh my God, get to safety and try to get help. How dare they?

And actually, the "submit rather than resist" thing makes SOME sense, it doesn't mean that the person should live in shame and avoid reporting it, it means that if they have a gun to their head, they avoid getting killed in the process. The real problem is that it needs to be worded better. It's not telling you to just sit back and enjoy yourself if a superior officer is slipping you a high hard one, it's just telling you to avoid getting killed if you can.

As for "victim blaming", I didn't see that in TFA...

And I liked the headline Subby...

You guessed wrongly.  The odds are stacked against women pretty heavily in any non-firearm scenerio.  Worse yet, an attacker is going to pass over the tougher girls when selecting a victim.

The attacker had the same training, is probably stronger, and if he's armed you don't have much of a chance.  Plus, basic training doesn't earn you a black belt.

2013-07-10 09:31:06 AM
The more rapist shot in the head by other service members, the fewer sexual assaults.

If the 'commander' can choose not to prosecute sexual assaults, then one can choose not to prosecute friendly fire.

Isn't a big part of self defense/hand to hand training how to overcome larger opponents?  All I'm saying is resistance may not be futile.  Clearly, I'm not a woman, but if I was I would probably want to go down fighting.

According to the UCMJ:

The maximum penalty for a female convicted of rape is 20 years in federal prison.
The maximum penalty for a male convicted of rape is death.

What in the actual fark?

2013-07-10 09:43:58 AM
I was in the Navy for most of the 80's and I never heard of anyone being raped. This was before women were integrated onto combatant ships so I'm certain the problem has gotten worse since then.

My wife was also in the Navy during the same period and she was sexually harassed almost everyday of her enlistment. It was from both officers and enlisted men. It was a culture that women were expected to tolerate because they "were in a man's world". When my ship deployed it usually got worse because they assumed she was a deployment widow that screws around as soon as the last mooring line is cast off from hubby's ship. Some of her senior CPOs and officers would try to convince her that I was screwing around in every port so she shouldn't have a problem doing the same. I hated those bastards.

I would take my chances and say just shoot me then.  Its got to be more difficult to hide a murder when you're on a military base, seeing as how the deceased is going to be missed sooner rather than later.

I could be wrong.  I just have more faith in our service men and women then the average Farker apparently.
