(Deadspin)   ESPN ratings have plummeted by 32 percent compared to 2012. Part of it is not having LeBron for NBA conference finals this year, but most of it is because America is sick of network's fascination with Heat, Lakers, Jets, Pats, Sox, Yankees and Tebow   (deadspin.com) divider line 173

Meh, most of it has to do with summer, tennis, baseball and other boring sports.

Heat: Won championship.
Lakers: Only lost four games in the playoffs.
Jets: Best quarterback in the league, only losses were to noobs.
Patriots: Killed it.
Red Sox: Best team in the AL.
Yankees: Demonstrated small market pride.
Tebow: See "Jets".

What exactly is the problem here?

There are more than thirty teams in each of those leagues that get like five seconds of coverage in order to make room for LeBron's latest douchebag statement or Tebow walking down the street

2013-07-10 08:41:42 AM
Not really. It's more that I'm sick of having to deal with all sorts of pointless discussions just to see the highlights.

2013-07-10 08:46:30 AM
Ratings would soar if they'd only show more Diamondbacks/Padres highlights.

2013-07-10 08:55:05 AM
It's not so much that they cover the same teams over and over as it is that they try to turn sports into a soap opera.

And they have functional retards giving "analysis."

Bingo.  Stop creating stories and start covering the games.

Have Around the Horn and PTI be the "sports discussion" shows in the early evening still.  I dont know what he fix is for ESPN, there might not be one at this point, but I am glad to hear the ratings are down because it might lead to some change in content.

How about actually showing games?  Show the sports instead of having idiots talking about them.  There's usually something going on somewhere...broadcast that.

They do a good job of that actually.  What games do you want to show at 11:00 AM on a Tuesday?

2013-07-10 09:03:20 AM
Also, start covering all sports in detail, even if your channel doesn't have the broadcast rights to the games.

2013-07-10 09:03:31 AM
ESPN is basically falling into the 24 hour cable news category. They used to be good at it until their management decided "you can never get enough Tebow."

Well, apparently you can.

Part of the problem is the bottom line.  It's cheaper to put three or four guys in a studio and rant for 30-60 minutes then it is to buy the broadcasting rights for various sports.

Yeah I'm fine with those two because they're not pretending to be anything but discussion shows. I actually like PTI but it's on too early and I'm still at work.

But Sportscenter...they really farked up a good thing.

Too bad they fired Rome.  They need some asshole like him on there, his Showtime show is great.  What I got from the article is that they only included ESPN and ESPN2 in this fact finding mission.  If so, why not include the rest, I am sure many people watch Deportes and ESPNU etc...
I found Mike & Mike to be a good show at one point. I was just telling my friend how believed that it went all Disney  due to the audience market which I believe is the "all ages viewer-friendly", and it is also a constant regurgitation of the same info every half-hour.
The Herd isn't so bad.

2013-07-10 09:12:43 AM
Sportscenter used to be straight highlights for the entire hour. And, they were really the only place to get that many highlights.

I can google any game or any sport whenever I want and get clips from the last game. There are also networks dedicated to each major sport that shows everything in addition to NBC, Fox, and CBS networks that have highlight shows.

So, to try and bring people to the channel without depending on highlights, they are forced to use the fake discussion arguments, celebrity bits, and story driving because their channel is better than the others.

My two biggest gripes -
1) "ESPN and media sources confirm". They HAVE to validate their existence by verifying the story. And, if they don't break the story, it doesn't exist. See: Reggie Bush
2) Each new athlete is driven in to the ground in an attempt to find a driving force behind viewership. Currently, Yasiel Puig.

Our local sports station replaced The Herd with a local show about the NHL and ratings went up exponentially. The Herd is simply awful.

Or they use "ESPN is confirming reports that..." without ever quoting the proper media person/outlet.  Scummy tactic.

That is the sad thing about ESPN (well one of them).  Everyone needs a schtick and a nickname.  Negative reactions are okay, as long as there is some buzz.  They book it like a wrestling program.

I go back and forth between M&M and Dan Patrick. The regurgitation does annoy me, but Paulie on DP Show explained it as they can't expect someone to be watching for all 3 hours of the show. They have to retouch the big stories because people might be tuning in for part of their show and, if someone listens for 30m+ at 11 and doesn't hear about the massive new story because it was discussed between 9-9:30, then they are doing something wrong.

Mostly, though, the insistence of pushing the personalities has become annoying. Greenberg is annoying and feminine and can't do anything right while Golic is a big dumb oaf that eats a lot.

THIS.  I wish they would show sports on ESPN.  Especially in the summer, which is a dead time.

Ok, so they don't have the rights to show baseball 24/7.  Why not more soccer, I mean for fark's sake someone's always playing a soccer match somewhere.  I get three of their channels and 12 hours a day no actual sports on any of them.

Flappyhead: Part of the problem is the bottom line.  It's cheaper to put three or four guys in a studio and rant for 30-60 minutes then it is to buy the broadcasting rights for various sports.

I know.  But that's why more and more folks are unplugging.  Between the move to babbling on sports and news channels, and reality TV, cable is just not worth it.  And unplugging farks ESPN right in the ass.  Live sports is the only incentive for a good chunk of the audience to stick with cable.

2013-07-10 09:28:50 AM
The rot goes all the way to the top at that place. Cutting one particular thing won't fix anything. Disney SHOULD blast away the entire executive level of the company and bring in completely fresh blood.

Unfortunately, what WILL happen is ESPN will slowly devolve into a 24/7 reality show network like everything else on cable

2013-07-10 09:29:01 AM
If ESPN wants to be a regional sports network, the Northeast/East Coast is the demographic area to do it.

To be a national sports network, well, this headline, 'Bat-retrieving dog for Yankees affiliate dies,' pretty much exemplifies the problem.

Before I clicked on your profile, I figured you had to be in either Detroit, Buffalo, or Pittsburgh.

Those are the only markets that could actually support a local all-NHL radio show (and not be such a large market that they would make more money from doing something else more maintstream).   I was right.

The Herd is pretty bad though.   I think you have to have a West coast mentality for it.

This is the most brain-dead argument in the world to me in the age of smart devices. My favorite sports station in KC simply podcasts everything- that way if you miss the segment on, say, discussion around batting order or the Bill Self interview, you can download it an hour later sans commercials. Coming up with a half-hour's worth of material for a three-hour show is just lazy now.
