"Working like a Mexican" is a huge testament to the work ethic of Mexicans. Getting past the stereotypes is a huge step, which Target seems to be doing a piss poor job at.

I spent a day at Disneyland's new California Adventure and was surprised at how many cars with Mexican plates were in the parking garage. These weren't the beater Toyota Hiluxes I was used to. I'm talking just normal cars from Corollas through Lexuses. Just a normal variation of cars, but having Mexican plates.

Then heading into the park I heard Mexican spoke all around me. I'm so used to the stereotype of the "Mexican dishwasher" and "Mexican landscaper" that I was truly taken aback when I saw normal families walking along dressed like any other park attendee.

It was so far from what I had predisposed myself to thinking. These people were just like us! After years of living in the U.S., I never would have thought that a visit to Disneyland would change everything I knew about Mexicans. These were families with kids, just like mine, who traveled across the border, like I did, to enjoy the sites and culture of the country across the way.

I sat down and wept into my hands. The experience was overwhelming. Who was I to judge these people? Are they not my guests in this country? They come not to take my job or to siphon money back to their families, but to just spend a day here and enjoy what we had to offer in the very same way that I've spent a day in Canada enjoying their country.

It gave me a new respect for these people. I vowed on that day that I would never look at a Mexican as a usurper of American jobs and services but as a fellow human being who in different circumstances could have been my neighbor. Indeed, in a deep and profound way he is my neighbor.

I've seen them advertised outside their quaint little "restaurantes" . That Latin food can be quite unpredictable. I fear they might be a little too spicy for me.  Too picante, as the say south of the border.

I don't know...I like 'em both, but I could kill myself with tacos because I'll just keep eating them as long as they're in front of my face.  Burgers fill me up.  Put a second burger in front of me and I'll pass. Not so with tacos.

Strongly disagree.

If a good taco (as in, authentic with soft corn tortillas) is messier than a good cheeseburger. You fail at eating.

My dad was half Mexican. I have many dozens of cousins in Colorado who speak fluent Spanish and some among them are amazing cooks of the best authentic food. I grew up in CA, and the only Spanish I speak is a few cuss words and how to order a beer. That being said, I've been to Mexico five times, once in business where I worked closely with educated, white collar Mexicans.  The other times as a tourist who was horrified to see babies in rags begging. I can't quite wrap my brain around the fact a fabulous mansion can be on a hill overlooking a shantytown.  I learned from one of the white collar girls I worked with that unless your family can pay for it, you are not educated beyond the 8th grade there.

You would be fishing my illegal ass out of the Rio Grande too.

freetomato: My dad was half Mexican.

Imagine the gut-wrenching feeling of those of us living here, every day. Worse yet, those of us that have taken to the streets to protest against the government.

I have considered to move out of the country, because quite honestly, there's less work. I'm already planning to move to Mexico City at year's end, and working there is considerably different from working here. I'm a little worried I might not work well, but it's a thing that I have to do.

There are a handful of families in Mexico that control nearly all of the money there. Every 5-15 years, a pretty serious revolution starts brewing... and it just never materializes. Not sure why.

Mexico City was actually the scene of one of the more heartbreaking encounters I had with the locals.  I was there with the International Olympic Boxing Federation,  guests of the Mexican Olympic Committee.  My co-worker and I worked a 16 hour day then were offered to go out for a much-needed drink, accompanied by four old guys, Committee members,  who'd been boxers in their prime (good bodyguards in a city that can be dangerous to tourists). They took us to a strip bar. *Sigh* okay I'm a big girl I can deal with that.  Just give me a cold one.  The strippers, God love them, were probably all of 15 years old, covered in tons of makeup hiding their natural beauty, and were terrified of us as we were the only women there not on the payroll (there was actually an old bag in the ladies room - their dressing room - that was probably their "keeper" and scowled at me when I smiled and tried to make small talk with one of the girls when I was in there). They avoided our table.  I sought one of them out, bought her a Coke and offered her a cigarette.  Three of those young girls ended up sitting with us.  I could see the desperate young girls they were and it broke my heart that they were doing that for God knows what kind of compensation instead of being carefree teenaged girls.

I took pictures of the group that night, and found out later that if I was the blackmailing sort, I could have done so, as the Muslim African country one of my companions was from frowns on Parliament members consorting with underage strippers.

2013-07-09 09:18:17 PM "Working like a Mexican" is a huge testament to the work ethic of Mexicans.

Indeed, in a deep and profound way he is my neighbor

Folks are too damn sensitive and PC these days.  Most of the advice is spot on.  My take:

a. Food: not everyone eats tacos and burritos;
Simple fact. Nothing to be offended by. Not remotely debatable.
b. Music: not everyone dances to salsa;
              Simple fact. Nothing to be offended by. Not remotely debatable.
c. Dress: not everyone wears a sombrero;
Simple fact. Nothing to be offended by. Not remotely debatable.
d. Mexicans (lower education level, some may be undocumented);
              I am not sure if the lower education level is true and I would ask; lower education level compared to whom?  I would assume white Americans is the intent.  If that is the case I suspect it is demonstrably true.  True or not, all one would have to do is compare the average education level of Mexicans and whatever the comparison group is to establish whether or not it is a fact.  Either way, nothing to be offended by.  Just ask them to fill in the missing info and get the data to establish the facts.  "Some may be undocumented" is a simple statement of fact. That statement applies to damn near any group.
e. Cubans (Political refugees, legal status, higher education level); and
              I know next to nothing about Cubans but the "political refugees" statement seems to need some qualification.  Such as "may" be political refugees. "May" have legal status.  I would also ask "higher education level" compared to whom?  Whites? Mexicans?  Whatever the case its nothing to get pissy about.  Just ask them to clarify then seek data to find out if it is true before you challenge it.
f. They may say 'OK, OK' and pretend to understand, when they do not, just to save face.
              Simple fact in terms of the pretending to understand part. Nothing to be offended by. The key word here is "may". Unless you can tell me no Mexican has ever done that then this is a simple statement of fact. I have actually experienced this one first hand on a several occasions from individuals from several different ethnic groups. Assuming it is done "just to save face" is a bit of a leap and I wonder how the author established this as the motivation, however, it may be true.

What you were seeing in the Disney parking structure were Mexicans from Mexico on vacation. They are regular working class citizens of Mexico here to enjoy themselves. These are not the illegal aliens that have invaded this country and are sponging off our society, dropping anchor babies and bringing crime and taking blue collar jobs away from the rightful citizens who deserve those jobs.

Don't confuse the two.

That whole anchor baby thing... How does it work?  Legally, it doesn't help jack crackers, seeing that ICE is willing to deport you and leave the children in a foster home.

And how bout that whole higher crime thing?  how does that work as well?  Mexicans leave their families behind and risk their lives to cross a desert just so they can cause a beer-induced ruckus and raping in a white bred neighborhood?

Seriously, if I didnt know any better, I'd swear you are just a racist person.

I'm not believing this especially after working at a place that hired lots of illegal immigrants.  They weren't all Mexicans either, but nobody was stupid enough to call people out on race - well, except for the legal Somalian refugees who worked there.

But I did work one place that hung up a lot of anti-harassment posters all over the walls and I asked my boss (who was of Mexican descent) why all of them depicted white managers abusing minorities.  He didn't have a good answer.  He also voted Republican and was the first to say tequila was shiat and Mexico could go fark itself.  But he did close the office early on Cinco de Mayo and take us out for beer and Mexican food.  Hey, Mexican food is good, especially the fake Mexican food you get in the US.  Beer is also good.

Someone got butt hurt during sensitivity training?

This is something I picked up from Penn Jillette: When the guys from standards and practices brief you on what you cannot say they will use all the words that Fark filters. They cannot use vague terms simply because someone might not know what they mean. So during sensitivity training I expect the same, otherwise they aren't being clear about what you can or cannot do.

But I'm in Dallas... EVERYONE EATS TACOS. If you have an early meeting you get better turnouts if you get a bag of breakfast tacos than donuts BECAUSE THEY'RE REAL FOOD.

Oh, and our cowboy culture interacts with their cowboy culture so the boots and the hats are a uniting feature.Sombreros are a novelty reserved for special occasions AND THEY CAN BE SPECTACULAR.

So, aside from the food and the hats... Most of them are illegals with anchor babies and bad drivers. But you can't judge them as a group because YOU can't tell an illegal from third generation. At least until they speak. I get better english at El Pollo Regio (where I watch Sabado Gigante for chuckles) than at McDonalds because the counter staff are citizens of mexican ancestry.

AverageAmericanGuy: "Working like a Mexican" is a huge testament to the work ethic of Mexicans.

It's been like that in Texas forever. Middle class Northern Mexicans take vacations up here in North Texas - they come to watch the Cowboys or the Rangers, go to Six Flags, etc.

Like this. This is a good example. Good food is universally appreciated, regardless of its ethnic origin. Plus, taking the time to think "Hey, my crew's working on a Sunday, and I bet they're hungry" shows you're thinking about their humanity rather than their ethnicity.

I worked a job for a couple of years where I was the supervisor of a foreign crew (Thais in this case).
Those dudes busted their ass every single day, and I treated them with a lot of respect, because without them, my job would have been a hell of a lot harder than it was.

There were some other American supervisors in other areas that would come to me and the American supervisors of similarly hard working crews, and bemoan the fact that their guys didn't listen, didn't work as hard, and weren't as respectful toward them as our guys were. You could never drill it into those guys' heads that when you treat your subordinates like they are a bunch of dumbasses, and treat them like shiat every day, they aren't going to do a very good job, just like -you- probably wouldn't be well motivated if your boss was an asshole.

Sadly, they never did get it, and usually they (the supervisor) would end up getting canned because their department had gone to hell.

I was at my local farmer's market on July 4th and I had skipped breakfast so I was eager to eat.  One lady was selling pork tamales for $2 per, or $18 a dozen.  She said they were made with a slow braised shoulder roast.  I tried one and it was fantastic.  Almost too much meat for the masa, but I couldn't complain.  I didn't buy a dozen because I wouldn't have made it home with more than a few.  Another booth had some nice fried boudin too.  Better eats there than the state fair.

A) It is not necessary that one be "worldly" to know that most Mexicans don't wear sombreros. It simply requires having eyes.
B) you failed completely to come up with a scenario where a manager would need this info, even allowing for the extremely unlikely circumstance that they wouldn't already know these very basic things. And no, fear that a manager might say "so, you guys all like salsa music, right?" isn't adequate.
C) you neatly avoided all reference to the fact that the manual flat-out says Mexicans are dumber than Cubans.

2013-07-10 03:10:36 AM

Ima4nic8or: Folks are too damn sensitive and PC these days.  Most of the advice is spot on.  My take:

a. Food: not everyone eats tacos and burritos;
Simple fact. Nothing to be offended by. Not remotely debatable.
b. Music: not everyone dances to salsa;
              Simple fact. Nothing to be offended by. Not remotely debatable.
c. Dress: not everyone wears a sombrero;
Simple fact. Nothing to be offended by. Not remotely debatable.
d. Mexicans (lower education level, some may be undocumented);

What you should be focusing on is why the thing was written in the first place, not whether or not it's true.

AverageAmericanGuy: "Working like a Mexican" is a huge testament to the work ethic of Mexicans.

Was this a joke?

Borrowing shamelessly from another thread, many Europeans who don't speak English have a brilliant strategy of waiting for the American to stop talking at them, smiling and saying "No problem," and the American magically gets all happy and leaves them alone.

So this still doesn't answer the question, is it "racist" to say unflattering things about Americans as a group?  Or is it only "racist" when it's Mexicans, Irish, Italians, Dutch, Chinese, Iranians.....or basically any other nation on earth?

neither.  statist, xenophobic, but not racist.

however, it would be racist if you are using the term "americans" to denote "caucasians", which would be stupid, but would be the analogy to the mexican=racist thing.

Ima4nic8or: f.

I've experienced this one a few times working in direct customer service-y type positions.  To be fair it's not something exclusive to Hispanics - everyone has their own variation of it at some point, especially Baby Boomers (dear lord seriously).  It DOES happen more often with those of Hispanic origin though, in my experience anyway; it's usually the males, and if its a married couple the husband will be saying "OK, OK, OK, si si si" and the wife will keep saying the Spanish version of, "uhm, honey, no, let him explain."  It being some kind of "honor" or "saving face" thing totally makes sense.

AverageAmericanGuy: "Working like a Mexican" is a huge testament to the work ethic of Mexicans.

Indeed, in a deep and profound way he is my neighbor.

tl:dr

My (white) friend worked at Target and they generally treat their employees horribly, Mexican or not.  Target was her second job for extra money.  If she got caught in traffic going from her primary job to Target and called in to say she'd be a few minutes late, they would routinely say "if you can't come to work on time don't bother" which explains why whenever I went to that Target the lines were a mile long, they probably told all the cashiers to take a hike for being a minute late.
Add in married manager banging employees in his office during work time and all in all it wasn't a nice place to work.

Seriously, if I didnt know any better, I'd swear you are just a racist person.

eddiesocket: JasonOfOrillia: eddiesocket: JasonOfOrillia: Hey Subby, maybe this is important information for your managers to know no matter who you hire?

Ooh, please explain further. Why do mangers need to know these things? And why wouldn't they already know them?

Maybe they need to know this so they don't alienate their staff.  Maybe they don't know it because they're ignorant.  You shouldn't assume that everyone is as worldly and well-read as you obviously are.

A) How do you know that Americanized Mexicans aren't only wearing sombreros at home?
B) I thought we were all here to mock comically bad training materials.  It could be that these training materials were generated over time based on the situations that came up over and over again.  There could be a rational explanation about how this training material was created no matter how bad it might be.
C) The manual does not "flat-out" say that Mexicans are "Dumber than Cubans."  The manual does say that Cubans tend to have a higher level of education than Mexicans.  This may be true, given that the Mexicans working for Target would be drawn from a population of economic migrants whereas Cubans in America tend to be political refugees.  My guess is that there is a higher proportion of tertiary-educated persons in groups of political refugees that almost any source of economic migrants.
D) Lighten up Francisco.

*scans eddiesocket's comments*  Yeah, you're not mocking, you just being uptight and judgmental.  Not only that but you are making ungrounded assertions.  Someone as pedantic as you should at least try to get it right.  Life is way to ridiculous for someone like you.

It was passed out in the context of a training manual for supervisors.  That seems pretty farking grounded to me.  If I worked at Target and member of upper management had handed me a manual that thought might improve my relations with Hispanics and it said "Just remember, not all mexicans like tacos," you would be reading about the first workplace violence incident that used the phrase "training guide sodomy".

The ungrounded assertion I was referring to was where eddiesocket stated "C) you neatly avoided all reference to the fact that the manual flat-out says Mexicans are dumber than Cubans."  This is, of course, false.  The document in question does state that Mexicans are less educated than Cubans but as we all should know education does not equal intelligence.  After eddiesocket accused me of ignoring elements of the document he made this silly assertion.  When I responded to his comment pointing out how silly he was being he neatly avoided all reference to the fact.

For future reference, pueblonative, may you should scan what eddiesocket has been saying.  He hasn't been mocking the source document like everyone else.  He just seems to be unpleasant and angry.

Target should sell of their old manuals to Fox News and recoup some of the cost.

kingoomieiii: KimNorth: kingoomieiii: KimNorth: Ice NEVER EVER deports the mother illegal

"The mother illegal". Holy shiat, bro, the phrasing doesn't get much more dehumanizing than that.

Then don't be THAT!

"I've decided I'm going to use 'illegal' as a noun, and never refer to you as a person, and if you don't like it I'd suggest not being illegal" is the same line of reasoning as "I've decided that from now on, any black person I see that isn't acting like me is a n*gger, and if they don't like it, they can act like me"

Have they made a law about that? No? Then shut the fark up asshat!

An Elizabeth Hasselbeck thread sounds even less fun than this one.:)

I would have had no problem if you'd said "Illegal immigrant mothers". I just think it's interesting that you took a noun, "mother", and an adjective, "illegal", and reversed their usage. Because you're a racist.

(Or just a tough-on-crime asshole, which also means racist).

Your comfort with casual racism led me to that. I most certainly could be wrong. My lack of compassion for how hard inmates are made to work had me branded as a conservative (ie cold blooded and lacking humanity, which is what I equate conservatives with, anymore) just the other night here. Not much room for middle ground these days. But I fail to see how this "guide" is anything but ignorant, and I have great eyesight. Your defense of it is either willfully obtuse, or you are a bigot and don't want to own it. There is no excuse, in this day and age, for the verbiage used in that handbook.

DrFuko: Coelacanth: Try working in a casino public area department, or kitchen stewards, or housekeeping with Mexicans. I've never worked with a more racist hateful bunch in my life. At one casino where I worked, the casino porters were calling an African-American shift supervisor a n*gger to his face if they didn't get the station they wanted, and SURPRISE, the Mexican HR employees never did a thing to stop it, except to fire the shift supervisor.
That's just one story out of hundreds.

So you are saying that since THOSE Mexicans are racist, you should be too?

Man, its is becoming harder and harder to stave off Godwin's law.

So it's racist to point out people who are racists?

My comfort with casual racism?  You got that from my comments sections of the document that state that Mexicans are less educated that Cubans?  I don't know if that is true or not but I could see being true.  The argument I made before about that is political refugees are probably going to be better educated than economic migrants.  I don't see how that is racist especially since I would guess that it holds true for all or most cases when comparing populations of political refugees to economic migrants.
