I am off work tomorrow, so I'm debating watching it at the local AO bar. The problem is that it's always packed to the gills with people.

One day every year I give soccer another chance by turning on an important match for an hour or so just to see if it's still the same painfully boring and unwatchable sport it has been my entire life.

Today is not that day.

/I do the same for basketball.

That's how I feel about Jack Dempsey's in NYC. Fun to watch there, but it's a bit of an overwhelming environment.

You missed a 6-0 game last Friday! That was fun.

Anyway, everyone thank  Bathia_Mapes for greening this thread (and for giving me 1 month of TF).

I'm really looking forward to this match.  Hoping Holden starts and Belize doesn't bunker too much.  Watching it at home since I have too much stuff to do here.  What does everything think about whether Landon should start up top or on the wing?  I'm thinking that Landon and Gomez up top, with Holden and Discarud (sp?) in the center with the rest of the squad the same from Friday.

2013-07-09 09:39:01 PM
Martinique beat Canada....woah.

I'll watch tonight, but I was really enjoying the Landon-free qualifying team. I figure they use him up during this and go back to the good squad for the fall.

Diskerud.

Landon needs to start on the wing with Shea, they'll probably play more in a 4-2-3-1 formation. Since this tournament is more or less being used as a trail run for getting into the A-squad, I would hope that Landy doesn't get played out of position and be possibly looked over in the long run.

Much like dook, I'll only VERY occasionally give soccer another try.  But seeing as how the rest of the family is out at the moment & I'm somewhat bored, I could use some background noise .... however the Cuban/CR game is in Spanish (which I don't speak) so the background noise factor may go away soon.  But I'll give it an honest try.

I did get there in time to see the Costa Ricans score so I guess that's something.

2013-07-09 09:50:40 PM
And there's someone rolling around like he's dying after barely being touched by the other team - strike one (& the MAIN reason that I can't stand soccer)

/the crowd seems really small too for a Cup game - or am I completely wrong about that as well?
//honest question

Is there even a FIFA-quality stadium in the whole country of Belize? I thought that was why no league sides from Belize could get Champions League bids.

Palmer Eldritch: Is there even a FIFA-quality stadium in the whole country of Belize? I thought that was why no league sides from Belize could get Champions League bids.

I read that this was the first official tournament that means something that they've made.  They qualified for it through the central american tournament by finishing second in their group stage, but losing twice (I guess it's double elim) 1-0 in the knockout round.  They don't have real jerseys and the ones they are playing in tonight were donated by Nike.  Almost all of their squad players are part-timers except for the keeper and maybe 1 or 2 others.

Also for those of you who want to relive 4 of the 6 goals from Friday and hear the players talking about them, check this out courtesy of the USMNT twitter.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=udaheTk1wio

I'm stunned at this lineup.

#USMNT starting lineup: Rimando; Parkhurst, Orozco-Fiscal, Goodson, Beasley ©; Beckerman; Corona, Diskerud, Torres; Donovan, Wondolowski

No Gooch, no Holden, no Gomez, Beckerman starts.  I don't know what the hell this is.

No Gooch ADubs!  I'm hearing that the US are approaching this as another warm up game and testing people out.  Also hearing that minutes + turf is playing a role in the Holden/Gooch/Gomez decision.

2013-07-09 10:13:37 PM
Also, Costa Rica is up 3-0 in the 77th minute.  That game is going to be huge and I'm trying to convince my friend to go since it is 20 minutes away from him and the day before his birthday.

Beckerman is here because Klinsi has a hard-on for defensive midfielders (i.e., why Jermaine Jones keeps getting caps) As to why Wondo is starting, I guess it's because Belize is so bad, Wondo can't help but to score against them, right. Holden still recovering from his knee, so he looks to be a half time sub yet again until he feels confident, Gooch is fitness and lack of match time in general I'd guess. And Gomez? No idea.

I'm sure Beckerman is a nice guy, but he is slow and cannot make the passes needed at the National team level.  You could see a marked improvement when he was taken off at half time and I'm struggling to remember a game where I actually thought he added something.  I can remember a few games where he totally screwed us, but none where he gave us a great game.  I guess I'll just have to wait and see how it goes in this match.

I'm sure if Danny Williams wasn't injured, he'd be here instead of Beckerman. For some reason, both Beckerman and Wondo look badass in MLS, yet when it comes to making the jump to internationals, they just vanish.

Kind of surprised Perry Kitchen didn't get a call-up.

Beckerman is ass. Been saying this for years now.

I was at the game on Friday with my soccer-noob brother in law. He said something like "wow they subbed that guy out and the whole team changed" about 10 minutes into the 2nd half.

I think he deserves a call up, but I'm glad he didn't since he's been the one consistently good player DC United have had in what is turning out to be their worst season ever.  I have to force myself to watch their games these days because they have become so pathetic.

Yep, Belize is so bad, even Wondo scores on them.

Wooo wondo! I have big faith in him, glad he got another goal. What a rip from Mixx! Beckerman goes unnoticed so far...

I feel bad for Portland watching this first portion.

2013-07-09 11:38:09 PM
I just noticed that three regular starters (clearly not today) for the USMNT play for the Tijuana Xolos: Corona, Castillo, and Gomez. Is that the most represented club in the USMNT? Quite odd, and it looks like a trend that will continue since they just signed arguably the two best players in the US youth systems in Paul Arreola and Alejandro Guido.

/Huh.

is dominating team USA. Honestly, the only goal was because the defense is high school level. If his defender wouldn't have gotten in the way, he would have not given up the first one (because it wouldn't have gone to a guy 2 feet from goal)

WONDO again!
Beckerman with an assist?
Wondo scoring twice?

Is this bizarro world?

2013-07-09 11:45:52 PM
Wondo tearing it up! What a goal! Wow Beckerman got the cross in, good for him.

I was going to comment on the chance about 5 minutes ago where the keeper made a kick save and there was a trailing player wide open waiting for the pass. Ah well.

2013-07-09 11:46:27 PM
OMG

BELIZE JUST SCORED

2013-07-09 11:47:23 PM
OMFG, Belize scored!

WTF USA, you should be up about 7 right now!

The fark is going on here? Wondo kicking ass!

Yeah, I feel even worse considering how well Portland has embraced soccer. This tournament is such a joke, the area is bad enough as it and the only decent teams decide to send alternative teams? C'mon now.

Stimied in a Rut: Hahaha wondo hat trick. Another great cross and headed finish

My problem with this is if he gets a look because of these goals and it messes up the top tier team's rhythm. No way a defense not made of full-time school teachers/part time soccer players gives him those looks. They've looked terrible doing anything else.

2013-07-09 11:54:33 PM
I've spent the last 15-20 minutes wondering how Fark was magically seeing the game faster than I was.  Then I remembered I was drunk and paused the game for a smoke...

But I'm feeling MUCH better now...

I'm hoping this is a trial run game, like a Spain-Tahiti situation. Yeah a good performance here doesn't mean much, but the gaffer is looking for cohesiveness rather than pure ability.

He left his feet, went in two footed straight into the legs.

That's a red card every time.

I left at the half. SO MANY PEOPLE. Awesome hat-trick, though.
