Yet another small government republican that doesn't understand why the separation of church and state is important.

Good, maybe employers who want to seem like they are all-inclusive will move out and go to states where their employees can have equal rights and benefits.

2013-07-09 06:37:38 PM
If the Republican party didn't have hatred and bigotry, it would have nothing at all.

FIBs, the lot of them.

2013-07-09 06:38:51 PM
Try it, morons. It'll probably work out really well for you.

2013-07-09 06:38:51 PM
Thus, if an Episcopal church, for example, decided to celebrate the union of two of its gay congregants, the priest might be in violation of the law.

Which is ACTUALLY breaking freedom of religion unlike the many attacks conservatives make against liberals who often only want none government sponsored religion, or no religious favoritism.

2013-07-09 06:39:24 PM
I'm pretty sure this fail was the result of a few self-loathing Republicans who want to look at gay men in prison.

I read that as "India"

The "who knowingly solemnizes" part seems pretty clearly to violate the first amendment, in particular the "free exercise" clause.

Yep.

I don't understand why the people who are so concerned about "freedom" are so willing to take it away from others.

Most of my extended family lives in Indiana, and I can assure you, they would not think anything looks stupid about either of those pictures. And thanks to gerrymandering and other fun math tricks, the votes of those rural and small-town whites are sure to be disproportionally weighted to any city-dweller to keep Republicans quite secure in their seats.

Because they are the only ones who want that freedom. They are usually the ones who believe (stupidly and falsely) that the more people who have freedom (as they see it) the less freedom everyone else has, as if it's a finite resource that everyone has to share.

and

2) "What about non-Christian religious faiths that are perfectly fine with same sex marriage, and wish to perform it?"

the new criminal code says that anyone "who knowingly solemnizes" a same-sex marriage is guilty of a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

Good luck with that. Let me know how it works out.

The changes to the code are set to take effect July 1, 2014.

There's a chance there could be some stonewalling before this all takes effect.

Summercat: I keep asking people who go "It's against the Bible"...

... why they don't stone all their own members who break any other stricture in the OT law?

The thing is, we ought to pass a law saying that the US Code will be replaced by the OT for all those who profess Jesus as their Lord and Savior by signing up at designated stations.  Each of these people will be automatically exempt from all taxes, fees, financial obligations to any government at any level, as well as all other laws, rules, regulations, or street signs in the US.  But they have to accept the punishments for breaking the OT laws laid out in said book.  I figure it will take approximately 3 weeks to cull the US down to a land of the sane.

Britain.

Funnily enough, it is actually nicer than the traditional British for of execution (and several orders of magnitude better at selecting who is guilty than standard British methods)

2013-07-09 06:56:18 PM
Is this right? Republicans in Indiana want to criminalize the free rights of humans to sanctify a marriage under theor own religious practice? I don't believe this. This would invalidate any claims they have that theirs is the party of religious freedom.

Too many people with their backs to the camera. 40 years from now, they'll insist "that's not me in that picture!"

I want to start a Facebook page "I'm Anti-Gay Marriage and I'm Proud," just so we'd have an ironclad record of people we could point to and laugh at in 2050. All the true believers would be happy to sign up for it, and that way, there's no way to run from it when their grandkids are horrified that grandma and grandpa were such bigots.

/Facebook still around in 40 years? Who am I kidding?

Nah, they are for freedom of religion for the right religion.  Everything else is a God-hating cult in need of extermination.  The fun part is getting all these "the only True Christians are the ones in the exact church building I attend" to then determine who gets to survive the holocaust

A whole flunking lot of people.  Somedays, it seems like practically everybody.  If these people believe their God has blessed America, I'd hate to see how he treats his enemies.

If a couple were thus to attempt submitting an application in protest of the state ban, they could face a maximum of 18 months in prison and a potential fine of up to $10,000.

...and then a federal court slaps the law down for the same reasons Prop 8 was struck down.

the new criminal code says that anyone "who knowingly solemnizes" a same-sex marriage is guilty of a Class B misdemeanor, punishable by up to 180 days in jail and a fine of up to $1,000.

/Plus, isn't one of the arguments these guys use against gay marriage is that they want to make it a crime for clergy to refuse to gay marry people?

The only thing some fundies think about more than gay sex is gay prison sex.
