Yeah, I read that as Bonnaroo, and was all: "Damn, I know it's been going more corporate, but I had no idea a bunch of hippies in Tennessee were into all THAT kind of shiat."

From TFA:

A two-year investigation dismantled one crew of the family, including a captain, two capos, a soldier and several associates,

Um. A crew has just one captain (also called a capo).

Mafia? How does it work??

One of my favorite quotes is from G. Gordon Liddy's biography on his stint in Federal Prison (paraphrased as I remember it):

"I was incarcerated with a bunch of gentlemen of Italian descent whose main crime seems to have been being more organized than the government."

I'm reading and thinking, and it always seems to go back to "Heads I win, tails you lose".

Charming if pitiable that in this day and age guys still think they can go into competition with the State. Just as most non-state crime in Russia was winked out in Stalin's era - unwanted competitors - the gigantic surveillance / Mafiosi turned agent / carrot-and-stick / Federal Witness Protection Progam got up to speed in the 1970s, when Uncle Sam, a fair-weather friend for the times, decided he didn't need Cosa Nostra to help him with his dirty work any longer.

Someone described, quite accurately, The Sopranos as "Balzac". When the theater turns inside out and power meets infinitely greater power. Kiss omerta bye-bye.

Yeah, but there's always money in the Bonnano stand.

I walked by the Bonnano's house every day on my way to & from school. John Bonnano was a year or two ahead of me. Their mob ties were about the worst kept secret in our little suburban utopia.

CSB:
When I was in college in Tucson (late 80's, early 90's) I had a job delivering flowers, and one of our regular customers was Joe Bonanno. He was such a nice old fellow, a regular old grandfather type. I had  absolutelyno idea who he was. I had to deliver flowers to his wife's grave every Sunday before he left Mass, delivered flowers to his house, talked with him when he came in to the store. One day I mentioned his name to my mother when talking on the phone with her, and she screamed "YOU KNOW JOE BANANAS?!?!?!?" She then proceeded to tell me who he was. Still, he was just a nice old guy to me.

/End maybe-not-so CSB.
//Also, my brother married a girl who is a descendent of Stefano Magaddino, Joe's cousin.

and ratting out on folks is looked upon as poorly in small town iowa as it ever was on mulberry street or around columbus park
