I imagine the thinking (such as it is) is that stale is better than none? At 20 per day that's "only" a 5 year supply and I imagine that staleness after 5 years would be acceptable.

The European commission is hoping to ban menthol cigarettes. The proposed ban on menthol cigarettes is only the latest example of the nannying instinct exhibited by many legislators in the European Union, which has already proposed or implemented bans on unsupervised children blowing up balloons, refillable olive oil jugs, and pictures of babies on baby formula.

I know that as a waif, seeing another baby on the baby formula package caused me to consume more baby formula. I just wanted to be like that happy little crotchfruit with the rosy cheeks and bright eyes. Funny now in retrospect, that a chain smoking, alcoholic baby with extremely very early male pattern baldness like me could ever hope to be a happy and healthy child.

Used to work for a tobacco company.  Menthol cigarettes would go stale quicker than non-menthol.  They would refrigerate the menthol cigarettes to get more shelf life out of them. All of his smokes will be garbage in less than a year.

I'm also quitting with an ecig. It's been 3 weeks since I've smoked a real cigarette (the day my son was born). I'm almost finished with the ecig. If I could just drop it all together without losing my job for telling the boss she's a coont while niccing...

I didn't either (mid 30s now). I've really surprised myself. Start by walking. Some say walking is better than running anyways. Then start working up.  Walk five mins then jog 1 min.  Couch to 5K is the program.

Even better is HIIT.  http://www.askmen.com/sports/bodybuilding_100/135_fitness_tip.html   Anyone can do this, from 10 y/o to 80 y/o bypass patient.  Start slow.

Harry Freakstorm: The European commission is hoping to ban menthol cigarettes.

Urban legend has it that packets of baby formula with pictures of smiling babies caused problems when sold in the third world. Low literacy rates, you see. People shop by looking at the picture on the tin that shows what's inside.

If you grew up watching Truth commercials you would be.  If you knew the actual truth you wouldn't be.  Funny thing is whatever he dies from at 94+ will be 'smoking related' unless a meteor hits him  Maybe even then.

Stored in a humidified room they'll be just fine. FDR horded over 60,000 CARTONS of Camels during WW2.

My grandmother grew up eating those nasty canned peas. When frozen peas came out she grew to love them, and made sure to have some at hand, which she kept in the big chest freezer in her basement.

When I helped her move house there must have been 60 bags of peas in her freezer. I don't think she was consciously hoarding them, just that many bags had migrated towards the bottom where she couldn't easily see them..

I knew a girl who was a 'casual' smoker.  She collected empty packs of menthol cigarettes.

She transferred regular cigs into the menthol packs; when someone tried to bum a smoke from her, they'd see the menthol pack and then say "no thanks".

Many things can all be true at the same time:
- I don't agree with his political views.
- He is a badass.
- I don't care if they legislate cigarettes.
- I do care about overlegislation and nanny state, example: no more open olive oil on my dinner table.
- Funny how one party person talks smack about an idol in his own party.

So it goes...

Because smoking isn't as dangerous as people would want you to believe. A higher risk of cancer is just that, a higher risk. The probability that you won't get cancer from it is higher.

Wolfmanjames: MrBallou: In a Post-Apocalyptic World, those will be used like cash. What does he know that we don't?

Heck, in the immediate aftermath of WW2, American cigarettes were the de facto currency of Europe.  He probably has a good memory.

In Seoul circa 1988-91, nothing could get you a taxi faster than holding up a pack of Marlboro Reds. Cigarettes were only about $5 a carton from the Commissary, so it was a win-win all around.

/If companies really wanted to make a nicotine lozenge that smokers would use, they should offer them in tobacco flavor. And have some caffeinated versions, too.

What I was thinking.

My wife smokes menthols, so I'm really getting a cough out of these replies.

/non-smoker
//she doesn't smoke in the house or my car. Usually.
///couldn't you just light up a regular and put a Hall's cough drop in your mouth?

Menthols are amazing. I'm not a big smoker (more a toker) and my wife and i pick wild mint to use for tea... Fun fact -- grinding a bit of dried mint into your smoke mix makes it freaking keen menthol. Screw smokeing a regualar with a cough drop -- its like smokeing the cough drop itself. Its like sucking in a nice icey minty blast.

Menthol joints are the best. Barring that mixing your weed with cherry flavored cigars is also keen. I'm drying bear berry and willow bark and red osier dogwood bark (from new green stems not old gross rough stuff.) to try adding to my smokeing mix... Cause why not right? Native americans smoked allot more jazz than tobacco... Blueberry leaves -- they would boil their tobacco with blueberry leaves to make filler...

And as for stale smokes... Take your smoke be it cigs or cigars and set them on a high shelf in the bathroom. Have a hot shower. Like really long and really hot. shave your balls, bang your lady whatever. Long and hot. The steam will revitalize your smokes.

I quit for the summer... i felt some time off would be not a bad thing... Didn't have a problem quitting cold turkey -- but then its easy when you have no contact with the outside world...

Heh i used to keep two packs on me in college, Mine and my bum pack. The bum pack was the cheapest menthols I could find. And hardly anybody ever bummed 'em from me. That pack would last for weeks sometimes. Saved a ton of money from the moochers this way.

Not really.  I quit smoking last year and broke down and had a few last year.  The pack was already opened so it had no protection (if any) from being sealed in cellophane.  It also had to be at least 8 years old - they were a no-name brand (literally) that was sent to me as consumer research.  I got my nicotine fix and they weren't really any nastier than they were when I first got them.

As others have calculated, this is only a few years worth of cigarettes.  They guy is 94.  It will probably last him a lifetime.  Suck it anti-smokers.  I repeat the guy is 94.  If cigarettes are so bad for you, why isn't he dead?

/only quit for financial reasons.

Doubtful. Tobacco lobbyists were the ones who pushed thru the ban on flavored cigs a couple years ago. Menthol was conspicuously absent from the list of banned flavors.

/now they just call the flavored ones "cigarillos".
