Realizing that Mexico's population is about half that of the us US the statistics are junk since 32.8% of 116.9million mexicans is only a third of the 31.8 % of the 318.8 million USA's  ( 3,834,320 vs 9,940,040)

The numbers are not limited to obese people. They are still based on BMIs that would probably label most of us as overweight.

I was in London a few months ago and a Iranian co-worker took me to his favorite Persian restaurant. Forget all of your preconceptions of Middle Eastern food. Syria/Iraq/Iran - In that corridor, they eat MEAT. Meat, meat and more meat. It was a glorious dinner.

Is there a preconception that no one eats meat in the middle east?

I didn't say they ate meat. I said they ATE MEAT.

Middle eastern restaurants around me (Michigan), have a wonderful mix of dishes that involve a wide variety of tastes and favors. Majaddra rice and beans, Kebabs with meat and veggies, hummus plates, etc., etc.

This was different. This was platter upon platter of beef, lamb, chicken, sautéed, fried, broiled. There may have been a few grains of rice hiding under the mountains of meat but that was about it.

Even Brazilian Stealkhouses have a side-dish bar. This place was obscene in the best way possible. Atkins-worshipers would be in heaven here (and dead soon after).

It was just one plate of 20 whole chiles.  I was eating one at a time for a minute, then realized I could eat about 5 at a time.  I coulda been a contenda!

BafflerMeal:  So I don't put any stock into someone trying to tell me what "Real Mexican food" is.

I couldn't agree more.  Save for this- in all of my time in Mexico, cheese was a very unlikely ingredient in most meals.  There simply isn't very much dairy in Mexico, it's not the right climate for milk production.

I will say this, though- When bottled beverages tend to be the go-to drink, kids down there drink a shiatton of pop (and adults a lot of beer).  And while I'm usually in rural Mexico, the blue-collar Mexicans I know treat being able to afford going to a fast food place as a status symbol, but certainly can't afford to eat there often.

There are few traditional mexican suppers that I've had that weren't fantastic, but few could be called low fat.  The healthier meals tended to be breakfasts and lunches.

THIS THIS THIS

Real Mexican food is not drenched in cheese or green chile.

Nothing pisses me off more than when someone says, "I had the BEST Mexican food ever".  Then the next words out of their mouth is, "the green chile was awesome".

Hmmm.  I disagree with this sentiment.  As told to me by our neighbor who left Chihuahua, every small pueblo in Mexico tends to derive its own niche food influenced by what was available.  And these foods are means of currency.  Here in New Mexico, which of course was Mexico until 1848, the green chile flourished and was incorporated into the food.  Mexican food is extremely diverse.  So I don't put any stock into someone trying to tell me what "Real Mexican food" is.

I hear ya, Mexican food is very diverse by region. I guess what my gripe is that the majority of Americans don't know that.   I assume italians tire of seeing all Italian food perceived as bubbling with cheese and red sauce. Nothing wrong with the food but Italian food varies big time depending if it's north/south Italy.

I prefer authentic ingredients first.  After that, let your imagination go wild on execution.

Mostly they just argue about whether pizza should be New York or Chicago style. I think Mexican food tends to suffer the worst from people claiming "authenticity," as I rarely hear people discussing the authenticity of ethnic foods. Maybe the great BBQ fights, I guess.

Your history's a bit off, but yes it did, starting in the 30s in Texas. Anglos didn't want real Mexican food so  Mexican restauranteurs started making food that was palatable to the gringos, which became todays Tex-Mex.

No, no, no. All carbs are bad. Didn't you get the memo?

FWIW I'm a lifelong runner. I eat a metric assload of carbs, always have, always will. Not fat. The problem is not carbs IMHO. The problem is that Americans eat too much and exercise too little. This is a controversial topic, obviously but based on my experience: get off your ass, fatty.
