It makes sense if you think about it. The fastest ones already got into the US because the Border Patrol couldn't catch them. That leaves the fat ones.

NAFTA is partially responsible. It put all the local farmers out of business and allowed Mexico to start importing insanely cheap high calorie foods. Every time you see a culture move away from its ethnic food to Western BS its the same thing.

I haven't been there in over 20 years, but we(my family) used to go to Mexico all the time. I have family in Reynosa, Monterrey, and Morelia. They did not eat like that very often. Beans and Rice are a staple, as well as roasted corn on the cob. They ate a lot of roasted chicken and fish, as well as fruit and vegetables. Barbacoa was once in a while, and one relative had a ranch where she had a pig slaughtered when we went out(I remember this well. It's something you don't forget. The ranch hands were cooking and eating the blood which I thought was weird). Tacos when they were made weren't from hamburger, and on soft corn tortillas with no cheese. I don't remember having enchiladas out there. Tamales are usually only made around Christmas. Do have to re-iterate fruit was eaten a lot. Go to the central market plaza in Reynosa, and that was all you smelled. They did drink A LOT of soda though.

I've recently watched several Cartel execution videos with 2-5 victims each, where the victims are on their knees, and the executioners are standing behind with long knives, axes, and machetes ready. What crossed my mind (in addition to the extreme horror) was how chubby many of these people were. Some of the female victims were topless, too, and they had those fat-girl titties. I thought, fat people aren't that scary! And then a guy stuck a knife into the kneeling dude's neck, and I almost vomited.

Reason I won't go back to Mexico anytime soon is because of the cartels. When I was about 13 one relative in Reynosa was the care taker for one of their private clubs. We went with him to work one day,and it was awesome. Two pools, and all the latest arcade games in the game room for free. They weren't as murdery and scary back then. They had the police a lot more on the take. I know. One of my relatives was a cop there, and we all knew he was getting money from them. He's passed on since then. The escalation in violence started with the crackdown on the cartels after the PRI lost power. My second cousin illegally immigrated here from Monterrey about 3 years ago. He was a dentist there, and his son and daughter were kidnapped for ransom by one of the cartels. He paid and they sent his daughter back, but never sent his son. No one knows what happened to his son, but assumes the worst.

It's really not just the cheese. I've been eating pizza my whole life, along with other foods, obviously. But, I've had my huge share of pizza. I rarely go to fast food restaurants or Mexican restaurants. Fast food, because they're nasty and Mexican because they are just so greasy. I have always had a good weight. Sometimes too slim, sometimes a little too much (but never overweight). To reiterate, the amount of pizza I have eaten is astounding. ... Cheese (not the processed crap) is not the only culprit. Or I'm a lucky person and should be huge.

I want to Mexico and ate "real" Mexican food at a locals restaurant over a decade ago. It didn't look like your "traditional Mexican meal".

It looked like your "tex-mex" without cheese and smaller portion. It was also unlike tex-mex cause it was bland.

Hmmm.  I disagree with this sentiment.  As told to me by our neighbor who left Chihuahua, every small pueblo in Mexico tends to derive its own niche food influenced by what was available.  And these foods are means of currency.  Here in New Mexico, which of course was Mexico until 1848, the green chile flourished and was incorporated into the food.  Mexican food is extremely diverse.  So I don't put any stock into someone trying to tell me what "Real Mexican food" is.

I hear ya, Mexican food is very diverse by region. I guess what my gripe is that the majority of Americans don't know that.   I assume italians tire of seeing all Italian food perceived as bubbling with cheese and red sauce.  Nothing wrong with the food but Italian food varies big time depending if it's north/south Italy.

I prefer authentic ingredients first.  After that, let your imagination go wild on execution.

I didn't say they ate meat. I said they ATE MEAT.

Middle eastern restaurants around me (Michigan), have a wonderful mix of dishes that involve a wide variety of tastes and favors. Majaddra rice and beans, Kebabs with meat and veggies, hummus plates, etc., etc.

This was different. This was platter upon platter of beef, lamb, chicken, sautéed, fried, broiled. There may have been a few grains of rice hiding under the mountains of meat but that was about it.

Even Brazilian Stealkhouses have a side-dish bar. This place was obscene in the best way possible. Atkins-worshipers would be in heaven here (and dead soon after).

I couldn't agree more.  Save for this- in all of my time in Mexico, cheese was a very unlikely ingredient in most meals.  There simply isn't very much dairy in Mexico, it's not the right climate for milk production.

I will say this, though- When bottled beverages tend to be the go-to drink, kids down there drink a shiatton of pop (and adults a lot of beer).  And while I'm usually in rural Mexico, the blue-collar Mexicans I know treat being able to afford going to a fast food place as a status symbol, but certainly can't afford to eat there often.

There are few traditional mexican suppers that I've had that weren't fantastic, but few could be called low fat.  The healthier meals tended to be breakfasts and lunches.

Nothing pisses me off more than when someone says, "I had the BEST Mexican food ever".  Then the next words out of their mouth is, "the green chile was awesome".

Mostly they just argue about whether pizza should be New York or Chicago style. I think Mexican food tends to suffer the worst from people claiming "authenticity," as I rarely hear people discussing the authenticity of ethnic foods. Maybe the great BBQ fights, I guess.
