Redundant headline is redundant.

Even better is this:

The Pakistani government arrested Afridi and he remains in prison, sentenced to more than three decades behind bars. Despite the doctor's key role in the mission's success, the United States has done little to secure his release.

'[T]he fact is that he was arrested 3 weeks after the raid during which time the CIA could have ferreted him out of the country.'

Regardless of how you feel about the raid itself, the fact that we essentially abandoned Afridi is going to give others who might be willing to work with the US pause.

Certainly, if I were a Pakistani, and even if I believed in getting rid of Al Qaeda, I wouldn't work with the US.  Not after seeing that.

Maybe he didn't want to leave.

Fair said it's not clear that Afridi would voluntarily choose to leave Pakistan, given reports that he turned down an offer from U.S. officials to relocate him and his family after the bin Laden raid.

Yeah, but we don't seem to be doing much about afterwards.

Of course, *IF* the reports are correct, then he made his bed and must lie in it.  If.

It would certainly look better if we could trade someone for him or something.

No, clearly we should have sent in SEAL Team 6 to rescue him (even if against his will) but 0bama was too busy playing golf and plotting the murder of Ambassador Stevens.

Or even if we made a public offer that we know would be rejected.

But yeah, my initial posting isn't really worth much.

CIA: The evidence is really strong here, Mr. President.
Bush: Yeah but...but I dunno. He's got a cowboy hat on, right?
CIA: The place is rented by an O. Bin Laden.
Bush: He could be a Texan.
CIA: The wall of the compound is surrounded by a guard of suicide bombers.
Bush: I can't get past that hat.
CIA: 8 witnesses says it was him.
Bush: He looks like he's clearing brush in that photo. How sure are you?
CIA: It's definitely him.
Bush: I'm sorry, I'm not gonna go down in history for murdering a Texan. Let him go. Besides he's in Pakistan. Osama lives in a cave in Afghanistan, not some fancy house with women.

It was the mid-to-late 1970s. There was a law mandating such hairstyles at that time, if I recall.

I always figured a wide-brimmed had would be a good way to avoid being seen by most security cameras, but I doubt a big hat really helped hide OBL when he was the only 7' tall guy around or however tall he was.

I just cannot fathom the levels of hate we've fostered in that region.

There are as many theories of Bin Laden's death as there are Obama's birth. He died of natural causes in 2001! He was buried in a cave in 2003! He's still alive! And I'll convince the sheeple by clumsily throwing together elements of all three theories at random and adding some catch phrase like "follow the money".

In all fairness, though, pretty much no one in the area knew he was living there, except for his very closest associates.  That's by design:  The fewer people who know where you are, the fewer chances someone might be tempted by 30 pieces of silver.

OBL took extraordinary measures to prevent his being located, and they worked for a long time, even with the US constantly on the lookout for him (and yes, we were intensely looking for him during the Bush administration).

The real problem, however, is that he settled down into a single location, and he also didn't change couriers.  What he should have done is built a number of somewhat more modest 'safe houses' and periodically changed both his location, and his couriers.

The courier thing is the hardest, though.  It is human nature to not abandon a trusted employee/friend, but at some point a person like that is a liability if they can be identified.  Of course, recruiting new couriers that can be trusted is also very problematic, so there is no easy answer here.
