I remember one white Southern man writing to say that although he was opposed to the mixing of the races, 'any time a red-blooded American like Captain Kirk gets a beautiful dame in his arms that looks like Uhura, he ain't gonna fight it.'

lulz

I always thought the "kiss" was kind of a cop-out.

1) They were doing it not of their own free will, they were doing it under psychic control by the Platonians.

2) Even though Nichols said that the version they used showed them locking lips, go to Amazon or Netflix and watch that scene - right before Shatner plants one on Nichols, he turns her away from the camera and you never actually see them kiss (because Shatner's head is behind Nichol's).

2013-07-08 03:37:36 PM
...and now there's "Lost Girl."  Which is significant progress.

Yeah, I hear Shatner has terrible breath.

Originally they wanted Uhura to kiss Leonard Nimoy's Mr Spock instead. Since Spock was half-man, half-Vulcan, that would have made it American TV's first interspecies kiss! But Bill Shatner said, 'Hell no, if anybody's going to kiss Uhura, Kirk is!'

Kirk got all the space pussy.

If this is first-person perspective from Nichelle Nichols herself, then why is the article byline credited to "Maureen Paton"?

What am I missing here?

Don't know, but it wasn't American TV's first interracial kiss.  This is common knowledge, and while the mistake is understandable for the average person, it is not for so-called "journalists".

Let me be the first nerd to note that Spock and Chapel would have made a better couple given their personal history anyway (generally assumed that along with the low number of redskirts in the main cast is why the two of them were paired up in that episode).

If they make a third movie and I feel interested in seeing it I'm rather hoping Spock/Uhura have broken up and are doing the sniping-at-each-other-constantly thing.

Wait huh? I Maybe it's just me, but I don't remember a whole lot of interracial stuff going on in Lost Girl. Plenty of gay and bi-sexual stuff, but not much interracial stuff that I can think of. Unless the gay and bi stuff is what you were referring to.

/also, Uhura was freaking hot back in the day. I loves me some thick ol' legs.

But...but... TOS was so progressive!  It shattered the conventions of TV!  (and so on, ad nauseum)

Probably not, but considering I'm usually the one moderating the conversation, some Trekkies get upset when I call bullshiat.  Exceptionally so.

The key is recognizing many of our favorites are indeed some of the shiatty ones, but we don't notice as they are some of the most fun. Space Nazis and gangsters, how sweet is that! Too bad the space cowboy  Enterprise ep wasn't better.

Yeah I'm doing the whole "watch it ALL all the way thru" thing.  Well, not TAS.  Anyway, its wild to go from 21st Century film making of ENT and jump clear back to TOS.  I'm watching the "remaster" on Amazon Prime.  I dig the new visuals, and really kind of wish they'd done more CGI on some of that old stuff.

I really enjoyed ENT, so don't bother trolling me with your hackneyed opinion of how it was so terrible.

However, I am starting to wish they had left a few things alone.  I don't have a running list in my head or anything, but if Archer knew/found out/did X, WhyTF is Kirk doing Y years later?  Shiatty record keeping?

Archer existed in the early days before the Heisenberg compensators were on every ship. So all of the reporting from ENT had a high degree of uncertainty and each box of knowledge had to be opened to confirm the contents.

I am violently opposed to colorizing old movies, and I didn't care for what Lucas did to Star Wars, but I love the remastered Star Trek.  The special effects were embarrassingly awful and really diminish the better episodes.

/of course, Star Trek is child's play - who is gonna step up and CGI the First Doctor's episodes?

I played her in seven movies, and the TV series led to me becoming a NASA advisor, recruiting the first women and minority astronauts for its Space Shuttle programme.

*sigh*
There are people out there that know the science and have studied for decades, but they give a position to an actress.
Our culture really has a serious issue with celebrity worship.

Y'all folks that weren't old enough to see it when it first came on (I was 6) you missed something awesome. White people going out of their mother farking minds! I didn't know what all of it was about, but I do remember news stories and some magazine and newspaper clippings my mother saved.

NBC/Paramount can thank it's lucky stars that it wasn't a black man kissing Nurse Christine Chapel... there would have been riots.
