We don't actually want him but instead it was a tactical move because Real Madrid is stalling with Higuain and rumor is they might try to buy Suarez.

Seems like Wenger & Co. are trying to keep the price down by window-shopping Suarez, Torres, Higuain, Rooney, and Jovetic... but they really need that solid scorer to stop just battling for that last Champions League place. Get Higuain and be done with it. (And then if there's a bargain out there, add 'em.)

Thirded. Subby dodged the obvious headline. Also it should be "striker Suarez".

Not like he's going anywhere in England. He's made it quite clear he wants to get out of Dodge. I expect the Real-Arsenal-Liverpool swap to commence within the next week.

Real get Suarez, Arsenal get Higuain, Liverpool get 35 million, which they will proceed to waste on Emile Heskey and Robbie Fowler again, or someone similar.

I was told Bayern Munich was going to buy everyone this offseason, so I've had my hopes up they would stupidly throw $50 mil to Liverpool for Suarez as a "eh, why not" move.

No need to spend £30 million for a Suarez striker. Many would PAY for the privilege

I thought this was just a ploy to show Real Madrid that Arsenal was willing to splash cash on another striker to get Higuain.

Lewandowsk has made it very, very clear he only wants to go to Bayern. So he'll go for free next season to Bavaria, apparently.

It's meaningless. Real Madrid is playing hardball, they've valued Higuain at 30 million euros (somewhere around 25 million pounds) and they don't want to budge. The newspapers, for whatever rumors they're worth, have said that Arsenal made a first bid and then an improved bid up to 23.1 million pounds. Regardless, RM is now saying that they've rejected that too, and that Real's new coach Ancelotti wants to discuss Higuain's role with the club with an eye on keeping him around.

With that, Arsenal has reportedly made a bid for Suarez, who is reportedly one of RM's targets. It seems that RM doesn't really want to keep Higuain, and Arsenal doesn't really want Suarez, but it's just negotiating tactics on both sides. Arsenal could make bigger and better offers for Suarez, which would make him more expensive if RM really is interested in acquiring him, and remind Madrid that Arsenal can afford other strikers besides Higuain.

That; I'm starting to get a little worried about Higuain.  This xfer should've been done and dusted by now and with Cavani (at least report) off to PSG, Chelsea might move to get Higuain.  Hoping it's not the case that Real's stalling on finalizing the deal hoping that someone might put in a bigger bid than Arsenal's.

Also, I've resolved to the fact that none of this will be done early, and the shopping will be done the last week of the transfer window. That's just the way it seems to go, more often than not.

The secondary issue is that Liverpool are waiting for Suarez himself to turn in a transfer request to save a little face in light of his reputation, so it looks like he wants to leave versus the club need to get rid of him. Still, I expect this little tete a tete to be done before August.

Real Madrid was hoping for a bidding war between Arsenal and Juventus for him. When Juve went for Tevez, that sort of left Arsenal in the driver's seat and Arsenal knew it. They're definitely hoping to stall and get another bid, which is why this exact story comes out right now (and why we keep getting linked with Rooney). Arsenal doesn't want to pay more, Real doesn't want to come down, so there will be a lot of posturing until someone blinks.

I think that Arsenal's bid was their "response" to Perez's comments about "no bids for Higuain" being made.  They just did Liverpool a favor by making the floor to let Suarez go at least £30 Million.  Perez should've just kept quiet about it and now might have to pay through the nose.

He was just sold to Fiorentina this morning. Sad times for me, I was always a big fan of "Torero". Also a bit disappointed he didn't stay to fight for his spot under a new coach, but I don't blame him too much. Bayern's style outgrew Gomez.

To be fair, I don't remember Chelsea even stringing together three consecutive passes or maintaining 10 seconds of consecutive possession until the 88th minute.

I thought I was watching 11 v 5 on a football field until Drogba happened.

It's a three year deal but shiat, Holt is a talisman. He may not of scored many last season but he was instrumental in almost every goal in the games he played. If Wigan keep a good defence then they will bounce right back up. £2mil is a steal.

I can only handle so much transfer speculation in the winter and summer. Luckily for me, the season starts in 10 days and a meaningful Europa League qualifying tie starts the Thursday after.

You just know it's going to be Darren Bent & Gabriel Agbonlahor. 'pool have left the big spending far too late, with the new tv deal player prices will skyrocket and LFC will once again find themselves priced out of the market. I'd be shocked if they even finish 6th next year.

It's a bit of a mystery, particularly in light of a purported offer from Napoli, which allegedly offered a €22m transfer fee, same or higher salary, and a chance to compete in the CL.

My tinfoil hat guess is that Bayern didn't want to bless a transfer to a team where Mario's scoring penchant could come back to bite them in the ass in CL stages.

They finished 4th last year, AC Milan beat them to the last Italian CL spot on the last day, some say due to some "machinations". In any event, Fio has now a pretty good squad for making an EL run, plus Juve aren't getting much younger, so they might have a shot at a title run in them if they can get the right results.

Blackburn are in for Jay Spearing (why, I have no idea, but hey, free money) and West Ham might pick up Stewart Downing (why yes, we'll take more of your money too Hammers!). I kind of want Fabio Coentrao from Real in a money+player swap deal for Suarez. He's a pretty good wing back, and we are going to be lacking some width if Stewie leaves.

That's only partially true. Gomez isn't a big game player for Bayern, at least not in finals, but you don't just toss aside a striker because they fail to perform in one game. The whole team flopped that day, and I think Arjen Robben was worse than Gomez was. (Yet you'll notice Bayern never once seriously considered selling Robben, despite the claims that he was out the door.)

It has more to do with the fact that Mandzukic fits the mold better, at least for now. With him and Mueller on the right, they could link up, switch places, and confuse defenses. They did this all season in Europe and in Germany. Gomez is really, really good at what he does, but he isn't going to switch onto the wings.

Bayern has been moving in that direction for a long time now, and Gomez lost his starting spot. He wasn't really given a fair chance to come back and fight for it (in my opinion at least) but sometimes that's what happens.

Langston: You're a Sparta fan, right? How are they looking this upcoming season?

As always, we will see. They've sold/loaned a few of my favorite players this summer but I like the coach and he's the expert, not me. The only significant news from us is that they are holding out selling starlet Vaclav Kadlec to a group of midtable Bundeslig clubs because they want more money (he's still 20). That, and today it was announced Bony Wilfried is going to Swansea. They are setting a club transfer record to bring him in, but I think he will do really well at the next level. Swansea is taking the risk and I hope it pays off for them.

As for the season, there's the Derby and a few scattered matches in the Czech League to look forward to. The real objective is make the group stage of the EL and bring in a few marquee teams.
