the_geek: meat0918: Check that, I think it's still very common at the private Christian "universities".I don't think people say it out loud because it sounds shallow. However, a lot of the women I went to college with got degrees they knew wouldn't help them get a career and are now working low skill jobs that were historically "women's" jobs such as administrative assistants, flight attendant, etc. They might not have been going to find a husband, but it's clear they weren't going to get a job/career. I suspect the truth is probably closer to the former than the latter.
damageddude: My mother, already engaged to my father, went to college in the 1950s and was interested in geology. She used to tell the story about how her geology professor tried to kick her and another engaged woman out of his class so real students, not just girls looking for husbands, could take their seats. She ended up becoming a teacher as there weren't many other career alternatives at the time but she always liked geology./my dad used to like to tell the story where he picked up my mother at Penn Station from a trip out west and when jokingly asking if she had rocks in her very heavy suitcase she replied yes.
