Killer Cars: I still can't figure out how M & S can incite such a strong reaction. To me, they play basic pop/rock fare with a banjo. I'm not saying that's "bad", but just not worthy of much introspection either way.

They got popular quickly.  For some reason this requires a group of self-appointed music and cultural aficionados to slap it down as "weak", "sold-out", "generic", "mainstream", "terrible", and whatnot.  And to these people, preference = quality.  They feel they can put some objective lens on preference and judge people by it.

Fark 'em.  Listen to what you like.  My only gripe is with people who don't TRY to expand their tastes from time to time.  There's great stuff out there of every style and genre.  Take a bite out of it every once in a while.  You might find something new you like.

LandOfChocolate: I prefer music made with real instruments

Which instruments aren't real?

By all means, enjoy the hell out of any music you like, but playing silly games trying to define things as real or non-real, fake or authentic, etc, is just stupid. To dislike stuff because it isn't authentic or played on "real" instruments is just as bad as the people who seem to only enjoy shiat on the top 40s list - you know why they like it, and it hasn't a thing to do with the music.

bungle_jr: ummmm...about a year ago, i was told by fark that liking m&s meant you were a hipster dbag...now...wow...ok, mind = blown

I have never enjoyed anything they've done.  It is amusing that this has turned me into a hipster though. I knew eventually I'd become a hipster, but I figured I'd have to try harder. The people labeled a hipster always seem to be working so hard to be different, but here I didn't have to do a thing.

gwowen: They're ok, if you like them, fine.
If you dislike them, fine.

If you hate them, you're almost certainly a hipster douchebag.

mark_bert: towatchoverme: I like that song of theirs that starts all quiet and slow and then gets all fast and loud.

When did this turn into a Foo Fighters thread?

this.
m&s starts fast/loud, with thumping 4/4 kickdrum on the downbeats, THEN goes to quieter and slower...then suddenly back to fast/loud, with thumping 4/4 kickdrum on the downbeats + banjo solo!

They were not all that great when they were new and fresh and on the rise.

They are not all that bad now that they're massively popular and headlining big festivals.

They were, they are, and they shall always be... meh-to-ok.

Esc7: Why does this word matter so much to us? If the music was really really good, but inauthentic, does it deserve our admiration?

We're all so concerned about authenticity in this modern world, you can see it everywhere: food, fashion, music, media. Maybe it is because so many things are fake.

I can't stand Mumford, because I can barely stand any modern musical act that has such a "soulful" sound. I just roll my eyes. I''m glad others can derive some joy from it, but I'm too self conscious to enjoy

Its just my personal preference.  I prefer music made with real instruments

Hillbilly Jim: DamnYankees: I love their music. Not sure if that makes me uncool or not.

It was cool to like them when they were quirky and fresh but now that they've sold out there boring and trying too hard. Despite not really changing anything except winning a grammy award.

I would like to recommend a song to you. It's a song by Tool called "Hooker with a Penis".

There seems to be an admin sponsored agenda to hate on Mumford and Sons.

They make good, authentic music and I'm happy to listen to it.
