I actually like their older album better, but I don't consider myself a fan of theirs to begin with.

There seems to be an admin sponsored agenda to hate on Mumford and Sons.

They make good, authentic music and I'm happy to listen to it.

It was cool to like them when they were quirky and fresh but now that they've sold out there boring and trying too hard. Despite not really changing anything except winning a grammy award.

I can't wait to hear about all of the cool bands that Subby listens to. I'm sure I won't though, just saying their name makes them too corporate and total sell-outs.

I would like to recommend a song to you. It's a song by Tool called "Hooker with a Penis".

Why does this word matter so much to us?  If the music was really really good, but inauthentic, does it deserve our admiration?

We're all so concerned about authenticity in this modern world, you can see it everywhere: food, fashion, music, media.  Maybe it is because so many things are fake.

I can't stand Mumford, because I can barely stand any modern musical act that has such a "soulful" sound.  I just roll my eyes.  I''m glad others can derive some joy from it, but I'm too self conscious to enjoy it.

Its just my personal preference.  I prefer music made with real instruments

They were not all that great when they were new and fresh and on the rise.

They are not all that bad now that they're massively popular and headlining big festivals.

They were, they are, and they shall always be... meh-to-ok.

2013-07-08 02:32:49 PM
I like that song of theirs that starts all quiet and slow and then gets all fast and loud.

I liked 'em when they were still Dave Matthew's backing band.

I've checked my charts and I believe that makes you massively uncool.  Sorry.

If you like them, you might also like The Silent Comedy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNXodzhk4PU They toured together a few years ago and TSC has a similar, though I would say "harder", sound.

I never understand this criticism of music. Why is this bad? I liked the first album, why would I want the new one to be different? I just want more of the same good stuff. If I want different stuff, I'll listen to a different band.

about the only time "authentic" really matters to me is when i'm wanting a specific nationality's cuisine and the restaurant i dine at is either "authentic" or not.

ie, there is a german restaurant just north of downtown ft worth...little germany. a coworker and i FINALLY tried it for lunch one day about a month ago, mainly because they have a really good list of lunch specials.

the food was quite yummy, the portions were huge, the price was not huge, and the service was good. however, it was NOT "authentic" german food. for that, so far i've only been to one local restaurant, over in hurst (just moved from bedford to a better location), called everything german.

music...i couldn't care less about authenticity, if that even makes sense. a band like m&s sounds like an old americana style, yet they're british. so "authentic" probably isn't the correct word.

mariachi el bronx...not "authentic" mariachi...but dang good!

To my ears, it's not just similar, it's exactly the same.  Like I say, I don't hate them.  At least they are musicians playing real instruments.

this.
m&s starts fast/loud, with thumping 4/4 kickdrum on the downbeats, THEN goes to quieter and slower...then suddenly back to fast/loud, with thumping 4/4 kickdrum on the downbeats + banjo solo!

Which instruments aren't real?

By all means, enjoy the hell out of any music you like, but playing silly games trying to define things as real or non-real, fake or authentic, etc, is just stupid. To dislike stuff because it isn't authentic or played on "real" instruments is just as bad as the people who seem to only enjoy shiat on the top 40s list - you know why they like it, and it hasn't a thing to do with the music.

bungle_jr: ummmm...about a year ago, i was told by fark that liking m&s meant you were a hipster dbag...now...wow...ok, mind = blown

I have never enjoyed anything they've done.  It is amusing that this has turned me into a hipster though. I knew eventually I'd become a hipster, but I figured I'd have to try harder. The people labeled a hipster always seem to be working so hard to be different, but here I didn't have to do a thing.

Old Time Music as a term and a genre predates Bluegrass. It's the term Bill Monroe would've used to describe the music he heard growing up.

Smackledorfer: Which instruments aren't real?

Basically anything electronic or software used to enhance the music.  There are tons of ways to produce music without using actual instruments (as classically defined, to my mind anyway).  I just don't care for them

By all means, enjoy the hell out of any music you like, but playing silly games trying to define things as real or non-real, fake or authentic, etc, is just stupid.

My original post only stated that I liked the band because I enjoy music made out of actual instruments and the talent of the people playing them which is to me, authentic music.

I still can't figure out how M & S can incite such a strong reaction. To me, they play basic pop/rock fare with a banjo. I'm not saying that's "bad", but just not worthy of much introspection either way.

For some reason that line sounds awesome if you say it to yourself in any one of a number of Simpsons voices.

putting your Casio on the Saxophone setting does not a John Coltrane make

I have a beat machine and can make you a "drum" part, but give me a drum kit and some sticks and I will release a Shaggs* album.

So, I think that is where the authentic part comes in to the discussion. Yes, it still takes some skill and a good ear but it isn't authentic.

/*I have said their name too much lately.

They got popular quickly.  For some reason this requires a group of self-appointed music and cultural aficionados to slap it down as "weak", "sold-out", "generic", "mainstream", "terrible", and whatnot.  And to these people, preference = quality.  They feel they can put some objective lens on preference and judge people by it.

Fark 'em.  Listen to what you like.  My only gripe is with people who don't TRY to expand their tastes from time to time.  There's great stuff out there of every style and genre.  Take a bite out of it every once in a while.  You might find something new you like.

2013-07-08 04:37:54 PM
oh, and that trumpet part isn't real. It just sounds real, and it might not matter if it sounds good and many might not care, but it is a copy of the sound a trumpet makes, therefore, not real.
