A Caterpillar employee in Thailand who tried to skip out on an 1.60 cab fare who ends up getting hacked to death with a machete by the pissed off cabbie?

Meh. I  find I have little to no sympathy for the asshole.

Sympathy for the cabby and both guy's families, sure but not for Mr throw-coffee-in-cabbies-face-and-then-try-to-skip-bill dead guy.

TFA makes it look like he threw the coffee in self-defense (after he was being chased by deranged cabby).

Maybe he was trying to become a ladyboy and the cabby just got carried away.

I bet you 51 Baht that this had very little to do with the cab fare.

Is it also normal in Thailand for someone charged with murder to also participate in a re-enactment for media purposes?

Instead of coffee, he should have tossed his shoe. This small action would have indicated a minor disagreement with the fare price, negotiations would have begun thusly. By tossing the coffee, he struck first and paid a different price. It's always best to know your client before hand.

I pretty much back up the rest of the sentiment here; fark him.
He should have given the cabbie a $5 and gone down as the best tipper of the year, instead he is dead over $1.60.

2013-07-08 02:49:18 PM
The victim allegedly stormed out of the cab and refused to pay the 51 baht ($1.60) fare.
The suspect claimed when he asked for the money, the American threw a cup of coffee at him, after which he pulled the knife from his trunk and chased after Pilkington.

How do we know?  It's his word only.  The taxi guy could have very well demanded a hundred bucks and threatened the guy with bodily harm if he didn't get it. Unless the passenger was totally drunk, I'm not sure why the passenger would have thrown a fit over a 1.50 fare.

There are many things to die for in Thailand - an orgy with 50 hookers, blow and booze over a weekend, for one - but pissing off a Thai over a cab fare and still not paying when he brandishes a machete is definitely not on the list. What an idiot. What a waste of a '50 hookers, blow and booze' blow out!

Why would you argue over $1.60 about anything?  Just pay it.

Then go down the street to the whorehouse and take it out on the dude's mom.

Hah.  Apparently you've never seen the ahole western foreigner types in SE Asia. (especially the Aussies)  They will nickel and dime and treat the locals like crap because they know the street folk need the money and will put up with a lot.  Every single episode like the article I have been around for or heard about was basically Darwin kicking someone in the arse for being a righteous dick.

I have seen some farking vicious knives and blades for sale on the streets of Bangkok. Huge farkers. Perfect for culling cheap tourists.

You haven't noticed there's a lot of white guilt here? Also implicit racism because it's assumed the white guy should of known better than to anger such a dangerous savage. Probably never spent time in Thailand and wouldn't know the difference between spoken Thai and Chinese. Pretty pathetic.

He should be charged still with murder, though.

I spent a lot of time in SE Asia as well, more in the Philippines - which also has its fair share of Aussie tourists.   the idea of arguing over a 1.50 fare is bad, bad policy.  I get nervous in cabs because it's very, very easy for them to rip you off and if you don't pay, the local equivalent of the sheriff is no better than anything in Mexico or some red neck county in the deep South USA, as in corrupt as all hell.

The counterveiling philosophy is if you let them rip you off, even if its only the equivalent of a quarter or a dollar, then it encourages them to always rip off foreigners.

The later makes a lot of sense actually, but having seen way too many episodes of locked up abroad and actually seeing foreigners getting beat up in foreign countries (Asians never fight alone, its always them calling their pals), yeah best to pay a little extra and not thinking about it.

2013-07-08 03:13:33 PM
the article says the guy got in, and after a few minutes sitting still, told the driver the meter was rigged and got out... cant speak for thailand, but in vietnam a pretty significant portion of the cab meters are rigged, and they switch on different rates for non-locals; i have seen as high as 100x the actual fare.

The advice from the locals was, watch the meter, know how fast it should be moving, if it goes up really fast, get out and walk away.

Also, this is probably a lot more local, but a buck and change gets you an awful long way.  If this guy just hopped into a cab in vietnam, sat in traffic for a minute or two, and the fare was 40,000 dong (heh); then the meter is definitely rigged.  I assume fares are higher in thailand, but i would still bet on the meter being rigged.

Oy vey ist mir.

On one hand you have that it's under $2.00. I haven't lived in Manhattan for a few years- can we even sit in cabs for under $2 now? Back then it was $1.25 just to sit. I almost want to believe this guy deserved it, but rather he should have had his ass kicked. Hard.

On the other hand you have this retarded cabby that needs to have his genes removed from the pool- murdering over such a low fare. Really. Granted, life is rumored to be cheap in Asia, but for fark sake, kick his ass, steal his wallet, piss on his face, but leave him with a lesson.

On the gripping hand: Who cares?

In Ecuador there was always a gringo tax.  Ask the driver up front what the fare will be before you get in.  If it's not too outrageously inflated, just pay it.  If it is, don't get in the taxi in the first place.

It's no secret that most of the Thai locals think any single foreign man is there for some underage sex.  He probably thought he was killing a kiddiddler.  It makes it easier if you dehumanize them first.

Recently got in a shouting match with a Saigon cabbie over a rigged meter. I threatened to call the cops and pulled out my phone and started to dial (pure bluff) and the cabbie counter-bluffed by yelling, "No, I call them!", pulling his phone out and pretending to talk to someone in Vietnamese. Laughed, threw some small bills at him and dipped out of the taxi and away through the gnarly traffic. Glad he didn't follow and stab me. So unsubtle how fast the meter was jumping up. Like 10$ for 5 blocks, really?

Anyway, don't piss off Thais. They're slow to anger but once they go they go all the way and don't stop.

From the more detailed article:

"Mr Cherdchai opened the front passenger's window to ask for money from Pilkington but the passenger threw an empty coffee cup at him."

So the cup was empty...he threw a, what I assume to be, styrofoam cup at the man and refused to pay roughly $1.60 US AFTER getting out and walking away for believing the meter was rigged. The guy may have worked for a douchebag company, but he didn't deserve to die. At the same time, he should have just paid the man his overpriced fee.

The video in the link is pretty gruesome...it actually shows the hacked up body...

It's a fairly common thing. I've had it in Thailand and even if I disagreed with the amount, I still paid what I thought was a fair amount and acted all pissed off about paying more than the locals in the 'jeepney tuk-tuk' thing on the same journey. I know it's the principle of the thing, but really, it's only a few pennies more for us tourists. It's kinda petty, on all levels. But I'd rather pay some moneys and be fair in my mind than not pay anything at all. And get the Thai police involved. Or get killed. And get made fun of on Fark.
