(TV By the Numbers)   Against all odds, the utterly lame duo of Leno and Fallon build prime demographic leads over Letterman, Kimmel, Ferguson and Nightline into NBC's biggest late-night ratings edge in four years. Why are they firing Leno, again?   (tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com) divider line 50

Old people are staying up later, I see. That's the only reason Leno could possibly be seeing a ratings hike. As for Fallon, seriously, does anyone care about that chickenfarker?

Thanks, but if I'm going to watch TV in the 11-12 hour, Stewart/Oliver and Colbert are infinitely more entertaining than Leno repeating a punchline or Letterman and Shaffer spending two minutes setting up a 5-second joke.

/Fallon's only screentime that wasn't completely worthless was in Band of Brothers, Craig Ferguson needs a show that's on when people can see it, and half the people with Neilsen boxes need them taken away at this point

I think old folks are falling asleep with the telly on more now than in the past.

Speaking of late night talk shows, how many of the people who declared themselves for "Team Coco" are actually watching his show?

NBC got scared when ABCmovedJimmy Kimmel into the 11:30 slot, so they panicked just like they did when Conan's "Late Night" contract was expiring. NBC figured a big demographic shift was on the way and it was better to move the younger guy in sooner rather than later or risk a generation getting attached to Kimmel and making him number one for twenty years or so.

But now half a year has gone by, and Leno has apparently more than doubled the margin of his lead over Kimmel and increased his already substantial lead over Letterman.

While everything seems rosy over at NBC at the moment, they seem to be facing the same situation they were with Conan. They're giving the boot to Leno, who consistently wins the only time slot NBC consistently leads. Leno, despite his age, seems to be a genuine workaholic, and is now not only winning his time period, he's increasing his share of the most coveted advertiser demographic by a substantial margin. Leno sucks, blah blah... that doesn't matter. TV ratings come down to these numbers, and the numbers are saying that it's a stupid move to dump Leno. And if Leno refuses to retire gracefully, he'll be a formidable competitor.

I watch it a few days a week, but only because prior to it there's usually 2 hours of TBBT or Family Guy leading into it and I just leave it on, listen to the monologue, set my sleep timer and go to bed.

I do. But usually I stop watching after the first skit unless a celebrity I give a slight shiat about is on.

Because old people don't buy enough crap to support the ad rates that NBC wants.  25-34 year-olds buy more.

Ferguson was funny the first three years he made the same joke which he still uses.

Other than that, obviously Fallon and Leno have bribed the pope.

Why are they firing Leno, again?

Jay Leno was infamous for his inhumane medical experimentation upon concentration camp prisoners at Auschwitz and was dubbed the Angel of Death as the Nazi doctor who tortured and killed thousands of children in grisly experiments.

No wait, that was Josef Mengele.

All the late-night shows suck.

Letterman hasn't been funny for 25 years, Conan hasn't been funny for 15, and Leno, Fallon, and Ferguson are never funny.

The simple fact is that the late-night show, as a concept, is done.

Young people do not watch network TV. Period. It's a mistake for any network to attempt to court that demographic, as they will never win as long as they live under the FCC's iron fist

Its weird to see someone so accurate in all their bullet points while being completely wrong on one of them (Ferguson).  Craig never fails to crack me up and I've been kicking myself for not discovering him sooner.

Different strokes and all but I can't help but think you need to give the guy another viewing, perhaps your opinion was formed from an isolated bad show?

TV Shows exsist to sell commercial time and since the late 90s DVDs as well.

To sell commercial time at the highest cost you need to have the most viewers.

Jay Leno has the most viewers, so therefore he is making NBC the most money. Subby asked why they are firing their biggest monemyaker?

/ya'll are explaing why YOU don't watch him
//subby didn't ask that
///so how about you try again eh?

thatguyoverthere70: And if Leno refuses to retire gracefully, he'll be a formidable competitor.

Where's he going to go?  The threat during the Conan transition was that he would move to ABC and Kimmel would move back to 12:30 or that Conan would go to Fox.  Well Kimmel isn't moving anymore and Fox has been trying and failing for years to get that hour back from its affiliates.  That really only leaves cable as an option and Leno on cable isn't a threat to Fallon.

I just about pissed myself the other night when he spent his opener playing the game "how much of a cock can I draw before it gets censored?"

Mr. Leno is the Walmart or McDonald's of post-prime-time entertainment. You know what you're going to get, when you're going to get it and you're not in an experimental mood at the moment.

"Why are the firing Leno, again?"

The short answer is because Hollywood liberals hate him; particularly since he started kicking the shiat out of the Obama administration over the last two years.

That said, I suspect that Leno's target demographic (older, middle america, conservative) sit down and watch his show on television.  While I suspect everyone else's target audience is watching particular guests on Youtube (Hulu, the individual show websites, etc) and don't actually watch the show on television (comparatively speaking).

2013-07-08 08:07:44 PM
I like Jimmy Fallon's show, actually. Not because of Jimmy Fallon. He gets the hell out of the way while The Roots and his guests do entertaining stuff for the most part. He's more of a ringmaster than the focal-point of the show.

Nah, even advertising executives aren't that dumb.  What they do believe which may or may not be true is that older people are more set in their buying patterns and therefore less likely to be persuaded to try a new toothpaste or SUV or shaitty light beer by a TV ad.

On the other hand, that group is probably less likely to time-shift the thing and skip the ads entirely.  That's probably why advertising executives are so dumb -- everyone's throwing darts at a board so there's essentially no return to intelligence.

I have to agree with this. I HATED Fallon on SNL, but have been surprised at how much I've enjoyed his show. I don't have cable, so unfortunately can't watch live Daily Show/Colbert.

Good thing you can stream most recent episodes free on Hulu.

Oh, and Leno sucks. He was never funny, even when he was relevant. Fallon is trying to follow in Papa Leno's footsteps too much. He is still a rookie so give him some time and he'll find his voice.

You're correct, even that isn't true anymore, although it might have been true 50 years ago when people would actually be Ford/Chevy for life, for instance. The current 50somethings and up, however, were born in the 1950s and 1960s, and they have never been particularly brand-loyal. And they have nearly all the disposable income, buy all the cars, and most of the vacations -- and they are far more persuadable than the media-savvy generations behind them. Advertising is a bizarre world where decision makers love data... so long as it confirms their existing preconceptions.

On the other hand, that group is probably less likely to time-shift the thing and skip the ads entirely.  That's probably why advertising executives are so dumb -- everyone's throwing darts at a board so there's essentially no return to intelligence.

This, that, and the other thing. This is why I love the Ad Contrarian.
