"It's going to happen with more regularity because the bear population is higher than it's ever been," Fowler said.

More bears + Bears getting hit by cars = Less Bears. Sounds like God has everything worked out.

One night I'm driving the back road that runs the county line.  Pitch black, strait for miles.  On a whim I cross the yellow line and drive on the wrong side to avoid some bad pavement.  A few seconds later I see these glassy yellow eyes being propelled across the road by what looked suspiciously like the underside of a couple of bear front paws.  Missed by a few yards.

If I had followed the letter of the law I would have totaled my car and killed a good size black bear.

Great headline.
But I must relate a story...  A buddy of mine was telling me yesterday that he almost hit a bear in central Jersey.  That pretty much almost never happens.  I've lived here for over 40 years, and I've yet to see one other than on TV.

So clearly they are coming south, and will soon be attacking garbage cans and picnic baskets until they reach Florida.

What happens when you don't allow hunting/trapping.
Nature gets dangerous when you take our the natural cycle of things.

What is interesting is that in a number of States, the people vote to ban hunting.
An effort that removed licensing fees from State coffers, reduced the sales and support of hunting equipment, and disenfranchises a group of hobbyist that spend big money even while in a recession, and that creates a higher nuisance population of the animal being protected.

THEN, the same voters turn around and approve paying for Wildlife Reduction efforts after all their shrubs and flowers get eaten (deer) or they find animals rummaging through their garbage (bears). These Wildlife Reduction Efforts? PAYING a hunter to choose a whole mess of animals, and then paying for disposal of the carcasses.

Hypocrites.

BTW: Bears are not moving south to NJ. Bears have always been in NJ. The hunting ban allowed them to breed at a rate that now cause negative interactions with the human populace. Guess you need to get back hunting.  http://www.nj.com/news/index.ssf/2012/12/nj_bear_population_needs_fur t h_1.html
