Sterilization should be an alternative to incarceration for the should-be crime of getting pregnant by negligence or when unable to support a child.

You better support the right to an abortion and nearly unlimited supplies birth control or you're a huge douche. And in that case, the penalty for rape should be death.

Nope. Be proactive. Identify the wombs of those who shouldn't procreate and shut them down.

To answer your next statement, read up on Margaret Sanger.

I support abortion, but with sterilization afterwards unless the pregnancy was due to rape or contraceptive failure.

You are in jail for stealing cars and have five kids. YOU ARE A BAD MOTHER. (But so is the Duggar baby-maker)

Regardless of legality, I support this if it is done with consent (which it was). I also value animals more than prisoners though, so, whatever.

They did that with Vikings. That right the infamous loot, pillage, and rapists had a more progressive attitude towards rape then we do.

Sierra Club spends a few million dollars a year to promote this type of thing.   So they were getting freebies.

Human sterilization, of course voluntary... or Philly style abortion mills are what Sierra Club promotes.

Meh. I'm pretty ambivalent about this. On the one hand reproductive rights are deeply personal and outcomes probably shouldn't be coerced. On the other hand some people simply should not breed.

Oh great, now here come the men's rights assholes. Yes yes, all women are lying biatches and 99% of rape accusations are just women being lying biatches, move along. Nobody understands the plight of the man in this savage new world.

Decisions to sterilize based on the same medical review process as seen in the health care reform act.

Fluid: Ooh, is eugenics coming back in fashion?

It never left. Buck vs. Bell has never been overturned and is still a legal precedence. The only reason why sterilization for criminals went out of fashion is that Skinner vs. Oklahoma said you can't have compulsory sterilization of criminals if white-collar crime is omitted.

Funny how the politicians don't mind cutting off everyone else's balls but change the laws when it's their own wedding tackle on the chopping block.

When did the Duggars start taking public money?  Don't get me wrong, I'm not in favor of unlimited kids but as long as they're not costing me more in taxes than they would otherwise, I don't see how it's any of my business.

Meh.......don't commit crimes and you're rights won't become optional. Also, your children have every right to medical care paid for by taxpayers, but lets try to minimize the burden your promiscuity puts on society. And before the feminists come stampeding in here, I am all for equality in sterilization.

"As soon as he found out that I had five kids, he suggested that I look into getting it done. The closer I got to my due date, the more he talked about it," said Christina Cordero, 34, who spent two years in prison for auto theft. "He made me feel like a bad mother if I didn't do it."
Cordero, released in 2008 and now living in Upland, agreed to the procedure. "Today," she said, "I wish I would have never had it done."

Well, if you have five kids and are out stealing cars (or at least if you're caught), you are a bad mother. Don't know if that makes you worthy for sterilization though.

Also, headline makes it seem like the women were given no choice whatsoever. They apparently all chose (or were coerced to, at any rate).

"Over a 10-year period, that isn't a huge amount of money," Heinrich said, "compared to what you save in welfare paying for these unwanted children - as they procreated more."

Protip, "Doctor", if your argument is "I got paid less for sterilizing these women than they would have received in welfare benefits", you are a bad person as well.

Daun Martin, a licensed psychologist, also claimed that some pregnant women, particularly those on drugs or who were homeless, would commit crimes so they could return to prison for better health care.

This is almost certainly true, and it really speaks as to the nature of healthcare in the United States. Any other civilized country, a pregnant woman could at least expect some form of prenatal care no matter how much she can or cannot afford. In the USA though, pregnant women steal cars to get sent to prison to receive some form of prenatal care when they cannot afford it.

Yeah, that's what he's saying. The world is completely full of poorly raised children due to rape and not stupid people shiatting out as many uterine turds as humanly possible due to zero foresight and a general lack of logistical planning.

Preventing stupid unemployable people from crapping out equally stupid nonproductive vagina blossoms is a teribble, terrible idea.

Cause, I don't know... Hitler, McCarthyism, George Orwell, Albert Camus, etc, or something.
