Meanwhile, FarkTV was shut down years ago. Nobody went for sweat & dead man's balls.

Apparently it's important enough for two threads on it within a few minutes of each other. So yeah, I guess it's kinda of a big deal

Never heard of it. What was it?

Why would you bring that up? I had forgotten about FarkTV, and you had to remind me!

A way for your grandmother to get on the internet in the late 90's

FarkTV threads were the best thing about this site for a couple months. Now, FarkTV itself, I learned not to click on those links, but the discussion threads were hilarious.

An idea 15 years ahead of its time.

RIP Xbox Zero First Strike

I know someone who still has a webtv email address that they use regularly.

While managing the DMZ for a financial trading company, I got a call about how our new website didn't work, and they opened a priority 1 ticket for us to fix it.

After much digging we found that they were using WebTV, and it's browser was only IE3, our site was built for IE6.  I called up webtv and asked if there were updates, and their reply was, nope and there isn't going to be any.

So basically we got to tell this person, too bad.  You're a fricken financial advisor, go upgrade your shiat.

I had it for 10 years. '98 to '08. Yeah, it had some severe limitations, but it was easy to use, virus-free, and fun to read email/surf the web on a big TV screen. That said, I don't miss it.

Thats too bad. They had a pretty nice view of Moffett Field.

It's like rediscovering a coelacanth... and then killing it.

Thanks for the memory!

I love how everyone was paging Rann, and naturally I cracked up when he showed up, like I always did...

The original WebTV. It wasn't easy to read your email on a low-res analog TV, and it was even harder to write email using an infrared keyboard. Pretty awful all around.

Meanwhile my google tv freezes up and crashes regularly and Logitech just says: meh, reboot and try again.
/ glad I didn't pay for the device.

My first internet experience was on WebTv. We had it until 2004 maybe.

I remember WebTV only because the chat scene I hung around at (TalkCity) went to shiat right after that. The influx of noobs had us running for rooms with weird names for about a year or so.

So yeah, good riddance.
