FTFA: Spell's parade permit application indicated that his entry in the parade would be an antique tractor pulling a trailer with signage advertising watermelons for sale in a nearby parking lot

I'm not sure what selling watermelons has to do with July 4th  per se to begin with, but the views expressed are certainly pretty antiquated.

Aside from the watermelon (which is only racist/stereotypical) if you make it out to be), "white history month" isn't bad at all. The only thing offensive here is the spelling.

Watermelons?  Should have been indicative of  "MIGRANT FARM WORKERS HISTORY MONTH"

Eating watermelons in the middle of summer; yeah, a total mismatch.

Dude, my hometown (not this place btw) is so laid back about the July 4th parade that the entirety of the process is to fill out a form with your name and address and pay them $5.  At that point, you can pretty much walk down the middle of the street, just waving at people.  The deadline for applying was 11am, when the parade started - and they would probably let you apply after that, as long as you had cash and the last participant hadn't left the staging area.

/I have seen parade organizers convince spectators to become participants because they needed to round out the damn thing

So are we all in agreement that this watermelons really belong in Black History Month and only Blacks enjoy watermelons?

The mist stupid thing about white racists making watermelon jokes is that the preference for fried chicken and watermelon in a hot summer day is a SOUTHERN thing more than just a black thing. My extended family is spread over the TN/NC border area, and I unfortunately have a lot of ignorant crackers in the family tree (and to borrow from Chris Rock there is also a difference between Caucasians and crackers), and come summer picnic time they almost always have fried chicken and watermelon to eat, despite making tasteless fried chicken and watermelon jokes at the expense of African Americans. It's amazing the level of cognitive dissonance ignorant white trash is capable of, which is why my wife and I moved to the West Coast first chance we got.

Look, I'm an educated person. I live in the deep South, and I have a sense of the long reach of history. As much as anyone can who didn't live through it, I understand the complicated horror that was slavery, the slow-burning indignities of the Jim Crow era, and the frustrating indifference that African-Americans have been met with since the Civil Rights Act "solved everything."

All I'm saying is, Chris Rock can say the n-word and I can't, and that's equally bad. Why can't you people understand my pain?

/also, I don't like how sniffy you people get when I call you "you people."

White History month:

Where the White folk tell tales of their ancestors slaughtering the Native Americans by the tens of millions.

Where the White folk tell tales of how a bunch of uppity Northerners tried to take their servant property away.

Where the White folk tell tales of how they nearly got burnt by the welcome, lower case 't', they lit on fire to make it more noticeable in the dark to the new people.

Where the White folk tell tales of how this is a Christian Nation and if you don't like it, go back to where you came from.

Where the White folk tell tales of how they dragged the dark skinned guy for miles and miles to give him the thrill of the red-neck games.

Speaking of the West Coast and Fourth of July parades:
I spent the 4th in a coastal California town, and watched the local parade down the main street. Same parade they have every year, fire trucks, antique car club, the Mayor, etc. Each year, the local ACLU chapter has a 'float' which consists of a pickup truck with a big Bill of Rights placard in the back. It's always boo'ed. Yup, they boo the Bill of Rights, because it's the ACLU presenting it. This year, the local Tea Party also marched in the parade. About 2 dozen old white folks dressed in white pants and white t-shirts carrying American flags. They got a big cheer from the crowd. Also this year, they had banners from some 'Constitutional' group, representing the Bill of Rights. First banner comes along, First Amendment, Freedom of Press, Speech, Religion and Petition. Nothing, not even polite applause. Shortly after that, the 2nd Amendment banner marches by. Huge cheers and applause. Another fire truck or gymnastics club or something goes by, then the next Bill of Rights banner. The Fourth Amendment. Yup, they went from First to Second to Fourth. Well, sure, who needs the Third these days, it's not that important. But surely the Fifth would be represented, right? Nope that was it. As far as they're concerned, the Bill of Rights consists of the First, Second and Fourth Amendments and clearly the Second is the most important.
West Coast.

Yeah, I live in Eugene, a very "free" and "open-minded" city. Everyone is loved and all that jazz. Go about 10-15 miles outside of town to the rural areas and you suddenly find yourself reliving the first 10 minutes of Mississippi Burning.

No, it's not. No matter how many times racists say that, it still isn't true. All history is taught in terms of white people, specifically white people of European descent. There have been contributions to history made by people of color but they are usually not known or taught outside of the occasional person like Harriet Tubman, George Washington Carver, and Rosa Parks, with maybe a Cesar Chavez thrown in.

Given that, the occasional month set aside to learn about and recognize the contributions of people of color to the world in general is not racist.

Saying otherwise is as stupid as someone claiming to want the "white" equivalent to BET. Those channels already exist. They are called EVERY OTHER CHANNEL.

/white
//not guilty about it
///not racist either

It is just odd hoe ignorant people are of history sometimes. For example, where I grew up in East TN, you had all kinds of people flying rebel flags and yammering on about it being part of their heritage, completely IGNORING that East TN sided with the Union in the Civil War, so their ancestors would have gladly popped a minie ball in their ass for flying a Rebel Flag.

That's why I had to go. I was living in a constant state of facepalm.
