Railroaded? Sounds like he had a contract with them that he decided was okay to break because he was getting some television attention.

Uh...Hitler was obviously a gifted speaker. Was an ass-clown who instigated terrible things, but WTF? Why would you possibly take flack for acknowledging it?

"Reality" programs of this sort have been on TV for 25 years or so.  They all follow the same basic format; 6 to 12 strangers of various personalities are put together in a situation designed to generate conflict and then filmed for all to see.  Anyone going on any of these shows with any expectation of privacy did not read the contract or forgot about it during the first drunken party where they had too much booze, danced on a table, passed out in the loo and delivered a technicolour yawn all over the cameraman filming it.  Anybody watching this sort of rubbish needs to get a life, or at least change the channel or read a book.

Good.

Anything that hastens the demise of the season-or better yet, the series-should be APPLAUDED.

He should have busted out his copy of Triumph of the Will to prove Hitler was indeed a really good public speaker.

Nobody seems to want to admit this.  He's getting flack for a couple different things, but the biggest bit of trouble is the "Hitler was a gifted speaker", which I don't think is debatable, and that the (admittedly awful) medical experiments done under Hitler have guided a lot of modern medicine.

The My Little Pony Killer: Railroaded?

Did you catch what the guy does for a living? The job he is going to be fired from?

2013-07-07 04:55:03 PM
Wow, I am surprised how many of you are ready to white-knight a Hitler.
He wrecked Europe.  In the long run, you can thank him for the Middle East, too, as well as the Cold War and the arms race.

But hey, he really knew how to get an audience of pissy Germans riled up. What a guy.

I can't defend what this man has to say, but we should defend his right to say it.

Why should employees be subject to their employer's preferences when they are on their own time and not acting as agents of that employer?

Because with the internet people that want to be offended can find who their employers are and then threaten to turn them into the next Chick-Fil-A

I would rather defend employers' rights to employ whom they want to.

No one is white knighting Hitler. What they are doing is saying that getting up in arms over stating an almost universally agreed upon truth - that Hitler was a gifted speaker - is silly. Agreeing that Hitler was indeed a gifted speaker in no way, shape or form defends him, his actions, or his beliefs.

You are well known for your lenient stance on crime, but suppose for a second that your house was ransacked by thugs, your family was tied up in the basement with socks in their mouths, you try to open the door but there's too much blood on the knob!

I said that about Hitler once and got a quizzical look from the woman I was talking with. I basically said that he was a gifted speaker and did amazing things for Germany before the war, my parting shot was "It's a shame that so much of his energy was devoted to hatred and death, imagine how different Europe would be today, in fact the whole world".

2013-07-07 05:22:51 PM
I said Hitler was a gifted lover once and everyone looked at me all weird, and then I said "speaker. I meant gifted speaker!", my parting shot was "it was a shame so much of his energy was devoted to foreplay" and then I said "hatred, I meant hatred!" Never going back to that synagogue.

I don't know if Hitler was a gifted speaker or not - I don't speak German. My Swiss girlfriend used to tell me it was mostly gibberish designed to sound smart (like Scientology).

I do know Hitler was an effective and affecting speaker. His words moved people and changed the course of the world. Denying this is like denying he had a mustache.

This is the best worst season of Big Brother ever.

Learn from their examples, folks. If you ever find yourself on a reality show, realize that everyone you know can see everything you do, and that it pays to be a decent human being even if it doesn't win you the game. Decent human beings get rallied around by fans who may very well make sure they're taken care of after the game (see also, Strip Search, where every single contestant got a devoted fanbase, and four different contestants have had projects of theirs funded by Kickstarter and Indiegogo with a fifth on the way, none of which are the winner, and it's only that low because those are the only four that have attempted them). Douchebags will come away with a lot of closed doors because potential employers, and in this case even current employers, won't risk the bad publicity.

And don't be Lauren Cleri. Just... don't be Lauren Cleri.

I might I am white-knighting, but I had two speech classes were we studied Hitler's techniques in depth, so I suspect the is a little more to his "praising" than simply saying, "Yeah, man, that Hitler could give a rousing speech...shame about the rest, though".

Which is why context is vital. Try this possibility: " Sure, Obama (or whichever politico) can talk a good game, but being able to make an effective speech does not make you a sterling character; Look at Hitler, for example...

Because your behavior outside of work can impact the reputation of your employer. When I worked in a restaurant we were told to not wear uniforms when going out. Mainly so everyone in town didn't see a bunch of sloppy drunks wandering around in "X REstaurant and Lounge" shirts. A buddy of mine who is an electrician was told that nobody in the company can take a company vehicle to the liquor store.

If the company defends the "what about all the good things hitler did" guy, they are implying that they condone the sentiment.

He has the absolute right to say what he said. He is not being arrested or detained by any law enforcement agency, therefore his rights are bein preserved.

Well, you could use it to point out that his oratory capacity allowed him to convince an entire country to partake in behavior that was reprehensible.  Or you could argue that if he hadn't been such a gifted public speaker he might never have risen to power in the first place.

There are plenty of examples where you can acknowledge he was a good public speaker without defending him.

If all you do is compliment his ability to influence a crowd, it sounds like you admire him. This applies to any compliment of a terrible person that doesn't have an immediate "however..." after that.

A whole lot of ignorance in this thread. Hitler was known as a charismatic and gifted speaker who could captivate his audience, any historian will tell you this. You don't have to condone what he did to to agree that he was in fact a talented public speaker.

Here's an excerpt from the Wikipedia article on Hitler.

Historians have noted the hypnotic effect of his rhetoric on large audiences, and of his eyes in small groups. Kessel writes, "Overwhelmingly ... Germans speak with mystification of Hitler's 'hypnotic' appeal. The word shows up again and again; Hitler is said to have mesmerized the nation, captured them in a trance from which they could not break loose". He used his personal magnetism and an understanding of crowd psychology to his advantage while engaged in public speaking.

Well, if you are so much of an attention whore that you would appear on Big Brother and you some how forget you are always on camera.. well, sorry can't feel bad for you for anything that you are called to the mat for...

John or Jane Doe hanging with friends at a bar making certain comments, while they might be objectionable, there is a certain expectation of privacy... Appear on a television show, there is no expectation of privacy and you and your employer are on the hook for your comments.
