Another reason I say, "thank god I don't live in this cesspool of a state any more"

Dust: They gotta pay for the roads somehow.  It's currently gas taxes in most places that feed money into the maintenance projects, but with the advent of electric cars, they're going to need a new way to support our aging infrastructure.

Hey why not use the trillions currently used buying missiles to shoot at brown people in other countries or even foreign aid to countries like Israel or Spain. Or better yet get it back from wallstrset, they owe a trillion tax payers

yes because the Mass state government buys those missiles and gives foreign aid, that's all in the state budget

Betep: Tolls on the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges!

Just got back from a week in Maine, absolutely didn't miss the Cape at all. Used to vacation there every 4th of July week and then smartened up and headed north. Sure the water is a few degrees colder but it's so much nicer and not spending 2 hours just trying to get over a bridge is nice too.

RocketCarHead: Toll Booth Willie

FYI- There is no toll booth in Worcester, because having entrance/exit close to where you need it would make too much sense.

Right, I'm sure there's just SO MANY electric cars being used in Massachusetts that gas purchases have gone to near zero.

Path of least resistance.  Raising the gas tax is considered political suicide, and their plan to raise it a measly 3 cents is kind of ridiculous.

It hasn't been raised since 1991, and since it's pegged to gallons and not inflation or price, revenue growth is regressive unless consumption increases year over year.

Since they can't raise the gas tax, make all the cars get worse gas mileage with all the stop and go, long lines so they buy more gas, each gallon with plenty of gas taxes attached. Results are the same, more taxes off gasoline is collected.

Last Man on Earth: There was a thing several years ago where one state (either Idaho or Iowa, I forget) tried to ban those semis with a folding point in the middle becuase of the effect their weight had on the roads.  The Supreme Court found that a ban like that was an impermissable barrier to interstate travel and commerce.  This is arguably less intrusive than that ban, but it still amounts to forcing a fee in order to enter or leave the state, so it's likely not going to fly.

I dont know about on the state level, but in New York City it is against the law to bring in tandem trailers like that.

Given the choice between toll roads or GPSing all our cars and taxing us on miles driven I favor toll roads-less invasive form a privacy standpoint.
Of course it would help if highways funds were used for highways and not bike paths or "enhancements" like museums.  Impose a tax on bikes and bike helmets to pay for bike paths.   Also require adults to pay a yearly registration fee on their bicycles.

Scum!

MindStalker: Rat: Liberal problems.  Down here in the great state of Texas, we do in fact build toll roads, but the interstates are kept free.  If you're unhappy with the free interstate, there are a few places that have toll only lanes on the interstates that run a little faster.  Why is it we have this figured out?  Oh yeah, we're fiscally conservative.  We also like to drive 85 on our toll roads.

Given Texans habit of going 15 over, does that mean you can go 100?

The Pennsylvania Turnpike's design: "Straight-aways were designed for 100 mph and the spiral curves were superelevated to accommodate 70 mph. "

The tolls will be temporary of course, just like the MassPike.

Rick Perry and friends have been trying to change that.  I-35 is on their list to turn into a toll road, for instance.

And essentially no new roads are being built except toll roads.

Naturally, that's the most expensive way to build a road.  It has all the cost of a normal road, plus the expense of tracking who uses it and billing them and such, plus profit for the foreign toll road company.

Of course, the state still has to provide the land, and the taxpayers still end up paying for about half of the development cost.  But politicians love them because toll companies pay big bribes.
