It's an Asiana 777. Not good.

2013-07-06 02:57:51 PM
You're right, costermonger. It'is a Boeing 777 operated by Asiana Airlines in from Taipei.

Here's a slightly rough 30 second video of it.

Thismomentinblackhistory:

Thank you.

Reports say the crew had to dump fuel and landed with 1 engine.

2013-07-06 03:04:19 PM
Looks like a cargo plane?

2013-07-06 03:08:00 PM
Has anyone blamed the batteries yet?

Nope passenger plane, just went live on CNN.

Nope.  In the video linked above  you can see the emergency slides are out.

Asiana 214 from Seoul. Holds 303 passengers.

A sympathy crash for 787s? Man, Boeing really has to fix that thing.

2013-07-06 03:10:44 PM
CNN is live, looks like it's flat on its belly off the runway.

2013-07-06 03:11:04 PM
A little more information from KTVU.

Plane flipped upside down after the tail came off.

2013-07-06 03:12:12 PM
Oh shiat, plane looks to be upside down and broken in half.

Popcorn Johnny: CNN is live, looks like it's flat on its belly off the runway.

KTVU has a live stream as well.

2013-07-06 03:13:15 PM
Yup, CNN is live.

Also? This crash happened almost an hour ago.

2013-07-06 03:13:18 PM
They are saying the tail came off just before landing.

2013-07-06 03:14:06 PM
Some early rumors indicated fuel starvation, but that is seeming less likely.

777 never had a fatal accident. Until today, I fear.

2013-07-06 03:14:16 PM
At least it's not an Oceanic flight.

Right side up, tail is missing and the back is broken just behind the 2nd door.

Depending on the model of 777, passenger capacity is anywhere between 314 to 550.

2013-07-06 03:17:02 PM
Yeah, it's not upside down.

2013-07-06 03:17:37 PM
How do people know there is one infant on board?

2013-07-06 03:18:57 PM
Yeah, better footage on MSNBC, clearly not upside down.

2013-07-06 03:19:17 PM
Maybe a North Korean caused this? It doesn't happen to this brand very often. And NK has done this before to SK planes.

Airlines tend to know who boards their aircraft, no?

2013-07-06 03:20:30 PM
If it is true the tail section came off I am wondering if these guys over rotated on takeoff causing a hard tail strike.

I know that, it just seemed weird to be popping up all over twitter.

I'm having trouble getting this to work but for those interested this is a link to SF EMS/FD scanner...

Because you can hear the little bugger screaming half a mile away!

This witness they're talking to on CNN is full of shiat.

OK.....over rotated on landing flare.

2013-07-06 03:26:52 PM
Listening to ATC, no indications of problems before landing.  Sounds like a tail strike on landing caused the tail to break off.

2013-07-06 03:27:14 PM
The picture MSNBC is showing seems to be from David Eun.

A lot of empty space near the end of the plane, good chance that nobody was injured or killed when the tail sheared off.

2013-07-06 03:28:04 PM
Rookie pilot?

It's a 777-400 RL.

Hope they all make it!

Not sure if it has been posted here yet or not, but here is the Twitter feed to a woman who witnessed the plane crash from her hotel room across the bay:

Used to

hold 303 passengers.

Strange.. I know tailstrikes on takeoff are common enough that new planes are tested for this before being certified.. Saying that.  This might be the first time in my life I've heard of a possible tailstrike on landing.

2013-07-06 03:29:40 PM
How do people know there is one infant on board?

That's easy.
They just set up some tables, brought out some nice food, played soothing music through a speaker and waited four minutes for the crying.

2013-07-06 03:29:49 PM
I tried to submit a livestream, here it is - KTVU's.

Tail hit the runway when it shouldn'tve.
