Pretty much.  They ignore the actual evidence, distort the actual explanations, and then claim that their uninformed imaginations are a better guide to reality than informed research.

The alien conspiracists at least have more imagination. Creationists just keep trying to use the same tired material.

They do have some things in common, they both have goofy ass reasonings for things they can't explain. The alien conspiracists are even more idiotic because they believe that a government that can't get away with a burglary, can't plant WTMDs and can't keep a blowjob under wraps can cover up an alien invasion.

What's an "alien conspiracist"? What particular beliefs are requires to qualify as that?

I also read those books as a kid and bought into them until someone gave me a few books by Carl Sagan. Then I felt incredibly embarrassed that I was so gullible as to believe such crap.

Creationists vote all for the same candidate, though.

Alien conspiracists don't vote in a block.

Some vote for whoever they think will increase NASA funding.   Some vote for whichever candidate isn't controlled by the reptilians. Some vote for whoever the grays tell them to.

Etc .

Conspiracicts are more likely to cancel each other out.

Yeah, you'd think that the fact that some contractor who apparently just got hired off the street was able to leak a really crappy Powerpoint presentation detailing the government's most secret project of all would speak against this notion of the government being able to keep a secret for long.

I think the reasoning goes that either A) government incompetence is either a distraction and/or intentional,
B) the government is as ignorant as the rest of us and only a few elite collaborators have ever actually communicated with their inscrutable masters, or C) the "aliens" are actually a secret over-class of technologically advanced, non-human primates(possibly cat like or reptilian) who treat humanity as a slave race to handle research and production. The most powerful humans are infact merely members of a priest-caste who attempt to direct the action of governments in order to meet the ends of the non-human overclass.

/C is my favorite.

The atom bomb probably saved millions of lives because it ended WWII quickly without a Japanese invasion, and nuclear weapons raised the stakes on war so much that the US and USSR were forced to limit themselves to indirect proxy wars throughout the Cold War. Their existence forced the human race to grow the fark up and actually put some thought into if war was really worth it.

As for genetically modified foods, our food is ALREADY genetically modified from thousands of years of agriculture. What is so terrible about using the equivalent of a scalpel to modify plant and animal genomes instead of the rusty axe of crossbreeding we have been using since the damn of agriculture? Just because we haven't had the leadership needed to reign in companies like Monsanto doesn't mean that the whole idea is terrible. GM foods have the potential to save billions from hunger, if used in a responsible manner with the right oversight.

Science, it works, biatches.

I think it's fairly ignorant to assume that we're the only intelligent life out there.  That said, while they may have visited us at some point to observe/study us, I sincerely doubt that they came just to help us build some things.  Some of the arguments that they have are almost laughable.

Yes, the pyramids are a marvel, and would have required significant architectural knowledge and planning, but it's important to keep in mind that the Romans were also a significantly advanced culture.  Had the Ancient Romans or Egyptians persisted in their development for the last 2000 years, we'd have surpassed our currently level of technology several hundred years ago most likely.

Not speaking as any expert, but the Romans and Egyptians have always fascinated me with what they were capable of... that doesn't mean that they had alien assistance, just that we clearly don't spend much time researching just how amazing those civilizations actually were for the time.

I'm always amazed how how advanced the Romans were, considering they were a pre-industrial civilization that made no use of electricity, motors, or even the printing press. It seems to me a person from Colonial American who found himself in ancient Rome might not notice much of a difference in his standard of living.
