(Grist)   This rock that secretes Vanadium is actually alive. Oh, it also has sex with itself once it reaches puberty. Go home, Mother Nature, you're drunk   ( grist.org) divider line

Well, they would if you excreted vanadium.

and its clear blood mysteriously secretes a rare mineral called vanadium

It's an element, dammit, not a mineral.

I guess you can get blood from a stone...

2013-07-06 04:29:46 PM
That's interesting and all, but did they have to cut it in half?  Now I have to know what it tastes like.

2013-07-06 04:41:57 PM
FTA:
- creatures like P. chilensis can have up to 10 million times more vanadium in their bodies than is found in the surrounding water, for no obvious reason.

FTWiki on Vanadium:
Particularly in the ocean, vanadium is used by some life forms as an active center of enzymes, such as the vanadium bromoperoxidase of some ocean algae.

FTWiki on vanadium bromoperoxidase:
Vanadium bromoperoxidase is a haloperoxidase, used to synthesize halogenated organic compounds associated with defense and pigmentation in seaweeds and marine algae. It is the source of the bulk of organobromine compounds in the ocean. This enzyme class is unusual in that it has an absolute requirement for the transition metal vanadium, which is present as vanadate.
Vanadium bromoperoxidases have been found in bacteria, fungi, and marine macroalgae (seaweeds) which produce brominated compounds.

Yeah, real mysterious.

Sounds like you can get the same experience by dumping the contents of your doctor's medical supplies into a pot with some stones and eating the result.

Trocadero: Vanadium trades about $25/kg, surprised nobody's tried to farm these critters.

Because there's not much Vanadium at all in the ocean, so a million times almost nothing isn't much at all.

2013-07-06 05:26:04 PM
What in the hell would possess someone to try to eat that thing?  People are kinda farked up.

Bondith: and its clear blood mysteriously secretes a rare mineral called vanadium

It's an element, dammit, not a mineral.

It could possibly be in some mineral form but considering what was measured was blood concentration it is probably just ions.

Also why link to an old Jun 28, 2012 Grist article that rips off the June 21, 2012  Scientific Americian article but also incorporates "citizen editor" nonsense from Wikipedia.

vanadium accumulates in its blood. What the hell is "blood secretes vanadium " supposed to mean?

2013-07-06 05:40:19 PM

omeganuepsilon: Yeah, real mysterious.

In complete fairness, it's mysterious to a society where a good portion of the population writes off science as a nerdy weakness..

LrdPhoenix: Trocadero: Vanadium trades about $25/kg, surprised nobody's tried to farm these critters.

I just did the math (or Wolfram Alpha did at least), and the concentration of Vanadium in the ocean is about 1.5 * 10-9 kg per kg of ocean water, which means 10 million times that is 15 g per kg of Pyura chilensis, which means you'd need to process with 100% efficiency at least about 70 kg worth of these things to get 1kg of Vanadium, probably more since the concentration wouldn't always be so high and it's probably not equally concentrated in all of their tissues.

I don't know if anyone said this yet or not, but is there a chance that these creatures -- which seem to filter the water -- are absorbing the vanadium from oil-spills and such, and just absorbing them and keeping them at high amounts?

Just makes sense if I'm understanding this correctly. These things suck in water, water is unfortunately full of oil, they filter it, keep the crappy bits, including the vanadium.

I'm a historian, not a scientist. Don't judge. Also I'm drinking.

marius2: I'm a historian, not a scientist. Don't judge. Also I'm drinking.

As I noted above, the vanadium is rich in some sea-life, these things filter the water, consume the algae and such, and bam, vanadium in this thing.

HairBolus: Also why link to an old Jun 28, 2012 Grist article
