1) These pictures are old (and I mean Internet old, not literally old, though they are literally old as well), I first saw them back in 2011.

2) Just skip the article and go straight to the flickr stream of the national archives.

What I noticed was the collection of misleading and almost cliche advertisements on slate.com.  They must allow anyone to advertise any kind of BS on their site.

Was a big credibility hit for slate.com in my book.

I was only 9 by the time they ended, but the 70's were fun for me. The dawn of the video game age, people playing guitars and cooking out in the neighborhood park, across the tracks the brothers would breakdance on cardboard. The fun died when Reagan shot John Lennon

The problem is that in the 70's kitty was old, so  a picture of her at that age would have been taken in the 40's or 50's.

THIS!

There was actual progress being made in the 70's. There was still a middle class. Civil rights still existed.

And then the US Embassy in Tehran was overrun and hostages taken. And the American sheeple, in typical roid rage and thinking only in the short term, elected Ronnie because he was thought he wold be tough on the Ayatollah (little did the population know that Reagan was secretly working with the Iranian militants the whole time to hold the hostages in order to ruin Carter's chances in the election).

And we have all been suffering horribly for that awful mistake ever since.

As someone who did live through the 70s and the 80s, in the 80s there was before Reagan and After Regan.

The huge videogame crash / arcades dying? Under Reagan. Start of middle class decline and globalism? Reagan again.

If you weren't there, you couldn't experience what it was like. All this creativity, competitiveness, manufacturing in the USA simply up and died under him. Want to see what the middle class was? Watch any movie from the same timeframe, 1979 to 1985.

It doesn't really exist anymore. We've got this insanely huge gulf between those with everything (and hanging onto it) and the rest of us with nothing, or if you're lucky, not much. I vividly remember that if you wanted to work, you could. Finding a job wasn't difficult, nor did you have to undergo idiotic techniques such as 'A penguin walks into the room, why?' while being interviewed.

Both sides are bad, yes. Until we re-establish a healthy environment where people who want to work, can, we're thoroughly boned.

That's still not answering the question. Unless your refusal to answer the question is proof that you're afraid to say that the answer is "no", you didn't live back then and wouldn't know what we had back then, and what we lost because of Reagan.

Go back to Free Republic and get your asspats.

And yet the cops weren't regularly donning swat gear to bust stoners, and there was what - a fifth as many people in prison as there is now?

Doesn't change the fact that the greens today are far superior. Also, I live in Seattle where the laws are a bit different.

How the hell did things change this much in 40 years? Reagan did it.

I remember by introduction to how good old Ronnie Reagan wasn't quite what his press releases portrayed him to be.

My grandmother, on a railroad pension, wanted me to learn how to save money. People used to do that back then, now I teach my kids how to not pay interest on their credit cards, or save your money so that you can avoid interest payments when you buy the larger items. But back then it was all about savings. So she said that if I put in 75 cents a week ($39 a year) into a savings account she opened for me with $5 when I was 8, she would give me another $11 at the end of the year. So I hustled returnable bottles, shoveled driveways when it snowed, mowed yards, and ran a paper route, whatever. I got a real job when I turned 16 and the bank book stayed at my parents house while I moved around. Come tax time, 1982 (I think) I look at my Dime Savings Bank account and it's $50 short. So I call long distance to the bank in Brooklyn, where I am informed that the banks were allowed to deduct $50 a year for accounts with no activity for over five years. They stole money from a little kids savings account! A whole year's work, wiped out! All because that butthole banger Reagan allowed the bankers to rewrite the laws. Big f*cking men, stealing from widows and kids. That's what I remember most about Ronald Reagan.

Then some Iranians took some hostages, it was on the news every night and this country took a panicked turn to the right to get to a past that never existed and has been running from phantoms ever since.

Reagan seized power?

Congratulations - you get the window licker of the day award.  Carter sucked.  Carter sucked horrifically.  Which really is too bad because he's an incredibly nice guy who truly cares, but as a POTUS, he was horrific.  Even before Carter was elected, we spent most of the late 60s and almost all of the 70s hearing just how horrific of a country we lived in.  Our economy was floundering.

I'm not saying that Reagan saved us - not at all.  However, to say that he seized power when he was elected, by a large margin, simply due to the absolute incompetence of Carter.
