So true. Nothing dates Zoolander more than the tiny phones. If they remade it now he'd have a twenty inch smartphone.

How about a small dual-screen flip-phone?

2013-07-06 10:52:46 AM
It will be interesting to see how this plays out.  For someone like me (50+ y/o) I need my reading glasses to see the dsplay on my phone.  A smaller phone will not cut it.

It has to do with manufacturing capabilities. It is much easier and cheaper to make a 5 inch 1080p screen than a 4 inch one. As technology marches on, the cost of making high-resolutioin screens in smaller sizes comes down. Think of it like CPU manufacturing: 22 nm. chips are the standard now, but that's because it isn't cheap enough to mass produce smaller 14 nm. chips yet- but they're working on it.

Plus too and also, there's the fact that we use our phones for a lot more than calling and texting anymore, which require only a minimal interface. It's useful to have a large, high-resolution screen for playing games, watching videos, creating and editing documents, and browsing full websites.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with the flexible screen technology that some companies are working on. Having a phone with a 6-inch screen that can be folded down to 3 inches when you're not using it would be awesome.

This is what Apple Fanbois really think.

Seriously, though -- I think there'd be a market for an iPod Nano size phone, with full iOS7. Keep all the pretty colors, too.

It really isnt that much of a trend.

Someone just released a 6.5" phone as well, the HTC One is going to come in 3 sizes.

It will settle down around 3 sizes

S, M, L

4.3", 5", 6"

I am just passing the info along that Ric Romano sent me.

I was reading an article about Silicon Valley and the line that struck out at me was the Author realizing that "that the hottest tech start-ups are solving all the problems of being twenty years old, with cash on hand, because that's who thinks them up."

Not even a trend for Samsung.  Since the GS2, they've offered a mini edition Galaxy S phone:

Galaxy S4 Mini (I9190) - 4.3 inch display (Q2 2013)
Galaxy S3 Mini  (I8190) - 4.0 inch display (Q4 2012)
Galaxy S2 Mini  (S6500) - 3.27 inch display (Q1 2012)
They were never very popular in North America, though.  Missing support for North American HSPA bands, no LTE and no CDMA.

I'm hoping the Note 3 is bigger than the Note 2. I like my fingers fitting on the screen and me being able to see what's on there.

I think it will go up to around 5.85" but I think they will stay below 6. For some reason I always equate anything 6 or above as tablets.

I have an upgrade to burn and the only thing that even remotely gets me to think about using it this year is the Note 3 but we will see.

Might have to wait for the SGS5 or HTC One 2: Electric Boogaloo

Most of that "media manipulation" will be Samsung's paid shills crowing about how it won't sell, and how Apple is doomed because of that. Sort of like what they said about the iPhone 5. Meanwhile, the iPhone is outselling the Galaxy S4 two to one

"It's not about size so much as the price," noted Sarah Rotman Epps, an analyst at Forrester.

If I had a nickel for every time a woman told me this in bed. I need to lower my hourly rates.

In all seriousness though, as much as I loathe Apple, if they made a smartphone the size of an iPod nano touch, with the little clip thing, I'd buy it. It would be like a Dick Tracy watch.

Exactly this. In fact, I'd go a step further. I want a triscreen flip phone. One e-ink screen on the front, one LCD screen on the top ala a pager, and a full color screen inside.

I don't love my iphone, but the iPhone 4S was literally the only smrtfone available that fit in my potchet. I really wanted a droid razr, but it was .5in too tall.

I wish someone made a 3 watt CDMA or GSM bagphone.

2013-07-07 09:33:01 AM
No-one cares because the fundamental question is: does it fit in my pocket/handbag? Make it an inch smaller, it still fits in my pocket/handbag. But I'm sacrificing UI space.

The next trend in phones is: no trend. The smartphone is basically done. When someone cracks thought control, that will be the next trend, or 5G (that Samsung are working on). But really, it's a mature product, in the same way that the family motor car is.
