sendtodave: Listeriosis is all natural.
JohnAnnArbor: sendtodave: Listeriosis is all natural.Saw Civil War re-enactor on TV the other night talking about authenticity, then saying "dysentery is authentic" but that was not necessary for re-enactment!
JohnAnnArbor: Dang: meant to say: was it fair-trade listeria?
ski9600: Ok, I'm all for the free milk and free cheese movement, but can we get someone in charge to be sure that we don't get farking sick!!!!
albatros183: Listeria is a bacteria so you can't vaccinate against it.
TopoGigo: I was under the impression that proper cheesemaking rendered raw milk safe. Is this wrong, or did these hippies fail at cheese?/Off to Wikipedia, with grains of salt
Ivo Shandor: albatros183: Listeria is a bacteria so you can't vaccinate against it.There are vaccines for other bacterial diseases, e.g. tetanus and pertussis. I don't know if there's anything for listeria beyond the research stage. The preferred approach for controlling it seems to be spraying the food products with bacteriophage viruses.
cyberspacedout: TopoGigo: I was under the impression that proper cheesemaking rendered raw milk safe. Is this wrong, or did these hippies fail at cheese?/Off to Wikipedia, with grains of saltThe milk is pasteurized, as shown on the label in the 1st comment here; I don't know if stores are even allowed to sell cheese made from raw milk. Unwanted bacteria can be introduced at other times during processing or handling, though.
TomD9938: This never would have happened if they had bought a brick of Velveeta instead./ it's cheese-ish...
Tatterdemalian: ski9600: Ok, I'm all for the free milk and free cheese movement, but can we get someone in charge to be sure that we don't get farking sick!!!!Nope. The point was to get away from stupid inspectors in the first place, and prove that Whole Foods doesn't need the FDA to tell them what they can and can't sell./good thing the left is convinced Whole Foods are the "good guys," it means they will get infinite second chances no matter how many people die//and all they have to do is keep lobbying the EPA, while telling the FDA to go fark themselves
bigbobowski: When i'm not pregnant I love me some raw-milk cheese. the other 30 days a year a make my own./ugh!
nucular bum: Reminds me of some Def Leppard song./"when you get that feeling"//what has nine arms and sucks?
Cyno01: In WI at least any raw milk cheese has to be aged for at least 60 days.
SN1987a goes boom: Couldn't they just have irradiated the cheese with a gamma source and prevented this?
Rosyna: SN1987a goes boom: Couldn't they just have irradiated the cheese with a gamma source and prevented this? You could blast it with sufficiently high-powered non-ionizing radiation (microwave) or energetic ionizing radiation (your gamma ray idea) to destroy bacteria. However, that wouldn't be "organic". irradiating meat products of any kind should be par for the course.
