People at one point believed that Perry was gonna crush Obama in the general election.

2012 was not a normal year for the GOP.  And it will go down in history as exactly that.

Dems fall in love.  The GOP falls in line.  And 2012 was the year they didn't and that's what happened.

Let's not forget that at one point in time Bachman was in the lead, Cain was in the lead, Newt was in the lead, Santorum was in the lead.....there was about three to five weeks of news cycle where the leader ended up being vetted by the press and the polls would change.

It was alot of fun to watch but the fact was and still is that it's about the money.  Newt might of had a shot at it but he just didn't want to spend like Mitt was willing to.  Mitt had the bucks to be in it to win it.  Ever since 2008 he was a guy that got up every morning, looked at how much he had at his disposal and tried to figure out how he could buy his way in.

Unless there's serious money behind them then it's all a pipe dream.  They might as well go home.  The GOP faithful don't function at a grass-roots effort; that niche has been eaten up by the Tea Party and the Libertarian/Casual Anarchists.  With the split ticket it's cash that gets the votes.

Want to see a preview of the GOP in 2014 and 2016?  Look around at the state level and see who is trying to out-do everyone else.  Bob MacDonald went down in flames and he shows no sign of pulling out of that tailspin but "Cooch" may emerge like the Phoenix from the ashes.  Were talking about Perry and Kaisch and McCrory and, of course, Scott Walker.  These are the guys that are stupid enough to stand up on the sinking ship and say "No!  I'll TOTALLY take them helm and I PROMISE I'll get you all to shore safe!!!!!"

No one smart is going to stand up because they're so far on the wrong side of history right now that it will be another decade until change is forced on them, institutionalized and they hav ...

With one exception, every year since 1976, the runner-up in the most recent primary or the sitting VP has gotten the nomination.

In 1976, Ford edged out Reagan....
who was nominated in 1980, ahead of Bush...
who, as sitting VP, easily took the nomination from Dole in 1988...
who, in 1996, defeated Pat Buchanan, who ended up going full Reform Party.
so in 2000, it fell to two newcomers, and Bush out push-polled McCain...
who, in 2008, came back from the dead against a weak field including the runner-up....
Mitt Romney, who in 2012 won the war of attrition against....

Your presumptive 2016 Republican nominee, Rick Santorum.

2012 was less about getting in line, but getting the cash. It was an unabashed race to fleece as many donors as possible. It wasn't about who might have a chance, because in truth, no one stood a chance against Obama, and the leadership knew that from the get go. After the McCain disaster--and it was in every sense of the term for setting back GOP Presidential hopes--this last go around had folks in who knew from the start that they had no chance, and used it instead as an opportunity to get books out, to campaign and get cash, that they could bleed off to the right folks, to keep their support on other revenue streams. It wasn't their money that they were spending, and they knew that. It was money that was essentially siphoned off to media outlets, to printing firms, to execs at "consulting" firms. It was about the money that the gullible were willing to fork over, and that large donors were willing to let other siphon off to keep their "message" alive.

No one really thought that Mitt would go the distance. For Hells sure they knew that Newt and Cain couldn't go the distance. It was nothing but a legal way for folks to siphon cash from rubes, and call it "patriotic" and collude with their media partners to continue to support the shenanigans that they would be able to cue up, and call the histrionics something else. It was about selling books, geegaws and bumper stickers. It was about driving up website traffic. It was to keep the dream alive, only without Freiheit's Eurohair, and to keep folks giving cash to folks who really didn't want to admit that they had nuttin'...

No, Perry has been to the dance before but that doesn't make him prom queen.  Not by a long shot.

casual disregard: Rick Perry is a cock-up, but I think the real story from that video is the sneer Romney gives to Perry. He's looking at him like he's thinking "this idiot is a country rube and doesn't deserve to be in the same building as me." It is arrogant beyond reason.

I don't know ... Perry is a country rube.  Romney's arrogance there isn't completely beyond reason.

In R-Money's defense (a phrase I never thought I'd use on Fark...), Perry is a idiot, a country rube, and only deserved to be in the same building if he were sitting in the audience. He was arrogant in plenty of other ways - his utter dismissal of Rick Perry isn't one of them.

At first I thought, "Gee whiz! Running for president doesn't get you your own bathroom at the debates?"
Then I remembered there like 28 of them there. There probably weren't enough port-a-potties in the city to make that happen.
