Not sure if anyone has mentioned it but the gut has a central nervous system all it's own. It has interneurons, processing ability and everything. It's also susceptible to some of the same genetic anomalies that cause mental illnesses because it uses some of the same receptors and signal transduction machinery as certain parts of the brain. This is why some kinds of gut problems in certain people are treated with things like selective seratonin re-uptake inhibitors.

So is it really all surprising that autism, which may have some genetic contribution, has an association with various gut disturbances? In any case, whether there is a genetic link that involves the gut's immune system or not, it's unlikely that gluten or anything else that causes digestive problems, is causative for autism.

Autism rates have risen because of numerous conditions on the "autism spectrum" added to the DSM, plus tge realization that if your socially awkward kid has a disability, you get an automatic pass on having to own up to raising a kid with the social graces of a brick and a check from social security each month.

Don't care. More demand for gluton free will help the people with a legitimate need for it.

And your little snowflake not eating wheat will not put your child or my family at risk (it might even make your child healthier as it rules out a lot of processed foods).

That is what I object to about the anti-vaxxers, they are risking the lives of their children, who made no such choice, and every other person in society for no legitimate reason.

The rise in autism is due to the rise in diagnosis and what was previously thought of as generic retardation is now recognized as low functioning autism. Also many parents of autistic kids are retroactively being diagnosed so the numbers seem to be rising.

Wheat is the demon food du jour. DNRTFA to know they don't know what the hell they are talking about.

A certain set of people have decided that gluten is the root of all evil.

These things go in cycles.

dv-ous: FTA: A new study published in the open access journal PLoS...

What's an "open access journal?"

Must be a rebellion against those uppity journals that require your research be reviewed for things like 'facts' or 'evidence'.

This is why the rates of autism have skyrocketed.  People never used to eat wheat before.

They also found that the IgG anti-gliadin antibody response was significantly greater in the autistic children with gastrointestinal symptoms in comparison to those without them.

I did not know that autistic children with Celiac disease can have the same types of symptoms as the non-autistic children with that same disease. Please, shiatty blog, tell us more.

Moonfisher: Other parents ask me frequently whether I have "cut wheat and dairy" from my son's diet to "cure" his autism. He's autistic; what he eats is very limited already. You cut those out and he's living off applesauce and wieners. Thanks, I will stick with understanding him and getting off my arse to implement an appropriate behavior plan, not blaming the trendy boogeyman of the week.

I wish more parents were like you.

I did behavior therapy with one little girl whose mother tried a different fad diet every month in an effort to "cure" her autism. All it ever did was make the little girl act out more and make her therapists miserable...

Fart_Machine: Um, there are some autistic people who are very sensitive to gluten but that wasn't what caused their condition.

Bingo! Someone needs to explain the correlation/causation thing to the author of TFA.

Haven't people been eating wheat for a long time?   Why would it cause a rise in autism?

A big reason for the rise of autism diagnosis recently is that you can buy one.
You tell someone your child is retarded/mentally disabled, everyone feels pity.
If you can say your child is autistic, you get a much more positive and encouraging response.
