They also found that the IgG anti-gliadin antibody response was significantly greater in the autistic children with gastrointestinal symptoms in comparison to those without them.

I did not know that autistic children with Celiac disease can have the same types of symptoms as the non-autistic children with that same disease. Please, shiatty blog, tell us more.

The floor might have a link to autism.  Every autistic child has, at one time or another, stepped on the floor.  If you are worried that your kid might be autistic, grab it and jump off a farking cliff.

Um, there are some autistic people who are very sensitive to gluten but that wasn't what caused their condition.

A big reason for the rise of autism diagnosis recently is that you can buy one.
You tell someone your child is retarded/mentally disabled, everyone feels pity.
If you can say your child is autistic, you get a much more positive and encouraging response.

Must be a rebellion against those uppity journals that require your research be reviewed for things like 'facts' or 'evidence'.

Autism rates have risen because of numerous conditions on the "autism spectrum" added to the DSM, plus tge realization that if your socially awkward kid has a disability, you get an automatic pass on having to own up to raising a kid with the social graces of a brick and a check from social security each month.

T.rex: Well... there is SOME reason for autism...   But according to many farkers, to suggest a cause is heresay.

I believe the word you're looking for is heresy. Hearsay would be me testifying in court that I  heard you  say that.

But if you insist, I will quote the heretics who authored this study:

The data from this study should be interpreted with caution. Most importantly, the observed increased IgG antibody response to gliadin does not necessarily indicate sensitivity to gluten or any pathogenic role for antibodies to gliadin in the context of autism. In addition, the results do not rule out the possibility of moderately increased prevalence of celiac disease among children with autism, especially as duodenal biopsy, the gold standard for definitive diagnosis of celiac disease, was not performed.[emphasis mine]

In short, the authors of this study seem to have a healthy regard for the scientific process, call for further study, and explicitly state the limitations of their study.

The author of the linked article did none of these things.

c-sections ... Are you out of your mind?

/SILs are a nurse and a bio prof, brother was pre med, currently teaches science, anatomy, other brother is heavy into the medical field, hospitals and such.  All my nieces and nephews were born by c-section.  I think they'd have heard of something by now and stopped having c-sections

The rise in autism is due to the rise in diagnosis and what was previously thought of as generic retardation is now recognized as low functioning autism. Also many parents of autistic kids are retroactively being diagnosed so the numbers seem to be rising.

Wheat is the demon food du jour. DNRTFA to know they don't know what the hell they are talking about.

Don't care. More demand for gluton free will help the people with a legitimate need for it.

And your little snowflake not eating wheat will not put your child or my family at risk (it might even make your child healthier as it rules out a lot of processed foods).

That is what I object to about the anti-vaxxers, they are risking the lives of their children, who made no such choice, and every other person in society for no legitimate reason.

That explains why France is over run with geniuses. Obnoxious, rude geniuses.

But then, how do we explain the Guidos of Italy. Isn't their pasta made of wheat, too. I'm pretty sure most of it is Canadian Hard Durum wheat flour.

Funny, I've eaten plenty of everything that is bad for you and it hasn't killed me yet. Maybe it is the variety that is keeping me alive.

I love variety. It's my favourite flavour.

Smorgasboard, buffet, family reunion pot o' luck, cafeteria-style! Wooooo!

Can we have a Whoaa, Bundy! for excess?

FTA:  A new study published in the open access journal PLoS...

What's an "open access journal?"

Open access journals are professional journals that are not behind a pay wall. There is a movement in the library and scientific communities that results from publically funded research should not have to be paid for. Open access journals charge the researcher a small fee to publish, and then allow anyone to read. Some of these journals are peer reviewed and some are not, so you have to be careful to research what journal you are reading.

I would prefer that nut-job parents believed that gluten was the cause of autism rather that vaccines as depriving their kid of gluten doesn't spread disease among the rest of us.

If a parent decides not to feed their kid wheat, it only affects that kid. If a parent decides not to vaccinate with MMR, it affects all of us. So I know which "explanation" I prefer.

That's already been done.  Tons of gluten free stuff in mainline grocery stores.  Tons of products that never had gluten in them now have big fancy GLUTEN FREE labels on them.

Yup. I grew up with a father and brother who had wheat allergies at a time (the 1980s) when almost no one had heard of such a thing.  Dad was pretty smart and mom was adaptable, so we ate a lot of rice when I was growing up and didn't really have bread in the house until  I went off to school.

The biggest single advance I've seen is the improvement in gluten-free baked goods.  The receipies mom used for corn-based cakes and cupcakes back then were pretty dire, and made me suspicious of gluten-free baking.  Today, you can get all sorts of tasty stuff at any decent grocery store.

/I really like Trader Joe's gluten-free chocolate chip cookies.

aerojockey: This is why the rates of autism have skyrocketed.  People never used to eat wheat before.

Yeah, I've got to say: the antivaxxers are nuts, but at least the scapegoat they picked was actually something that has changed over time. It's not a great match for the rise of autism, time-wise (one of the reasons you can tell it's bunk), but wheat consumption doesn't even have that much to fall back on.

I heard that there is a link to unprotected sex and the rise of Autism.
