Thanks to that article, I just learned that there are 4th, 5th, and 6th degree burns.

Thanks, I guess.

Usually in the case of fireworks injuries I don't feel sorry for the injured but for once it wasn't the dumbass lighting it. Would kinda suck to be just sitting there in a park and have your foot blown off thanks to some other idiot.

When you outlaw fireworks only outlaws have fireworks.

Did I just read an article dated July 5th with a video titled 4th of July safety tips?

What The Hell?

What the fark were they shooting that has enough force to blow a leg off?

Even mortars are just shooting balls of fire, what even has a projectile capable of this?

No, only up to fourth, which are also referred to as "deep" burns. It means it goes full thickness into the underlying muscle, tissue, and/or bone, destroying nerve function as well.

Yeah, 1.4g (consumer grade) generally arent powerful enough to actually dismember a person when exploding in open air.  Something wasnt normal in the situation.

But Wait There's More: Trying to come up with a witty comment, but I'm stumped.

AS someone who had their left leg amputated 10 years ago I admit I am stumped also.

5th and 6th are only classified during autopsy.

"If it goes bang or has a flame, it's illegal to use within city limits."

There were about 2000 fireworks going off every minute in Logan Park last night.

After 5th and 6th degree you have medium well and well.

Yeah, it sounds like they were hit by someone else's mortar gone horribly wrong.  You still have to be careful around other's stuff, though, because things like this can happen.  I don't watch amateurs with mortars unless there's something solid between us and I don't watch even bottle rockets unless I've got something to duck behind.

Mortars throw an explosive charge--something has to throw those balls of fire out.

You know, it's noted that Illinois has really restrictive firework laws, and Chicago's are even tighter.  Yet they still have these injuries, pretty much every year.

I wonder it it's a bit like drugs and such - dumbasses will be quite ingenious in getting their illegal substances which they will proceed to use unsafely, while the smarter people's safe and legal fun will be restricted.

I wonder if the fireworks restrictions really do any good.

I had a firework free 4th this year due to fire hazard.  Believe it or not, in an area where 'most' people have cached fireworks, NOBODY set any off in my hearing yesterday.

This is in an area normally known for 'enthusiastic' participation in anything involving explosives.

I'm happy to report that, unlike Memorial Day, this Fourth we didn't accidentally shoot a Roman candle at the baby's high chair. We left him inside this time.
