No one says "U of K" except for Louisville fans who say it because it might bother a UK fan.  It's the sports equivalent of saying "Democrat Party".

Been done. Players have even sued to try and overturn the NBA's one year rule. If you go overseas it's a lot harder to be noticed by the NBA although not impossible since plenty of Euros make it to the league these days. Still, playing for a big name school like Kentucky or Kansas is pretty much the best way to audition for the NBA. Plus in the case of UK you still get paid.
