Just because H.Pylori was found to cause peptic ulcers does not mean you'll get taken seriously when you say you have chronic Lyme disease or morgellons

These aren't crazy ideas in science, they're crazy people who happened to stumble over some scientific innovations whilst they were blundering and blithering madly around about totally unscientific shiat. Broken clocks being right twice a day and all that.

Lyme disease isn't real anymore? My nephew will be relieved. It farked up most of his childhood.

The vampire is real.

Check the symptoms of rabies, as seen through the eyes of a superstitious eastern--European peasant, and you see what I mean.

The zombie is proven by science to be real.

If a Haitian witch doctor hates someone and wants revenge, he introduces a poison which makes the victim fall into a coma which lasts about three days.  Since Haiti is very hot, the coma is mistaken for death.  Only the witch doctor knows when the poison wears off, so he can be there to "wake" the victim.

Highly impressive---and very convenient.

Wow, they give a hell of a lot more credit to Newton for Gravity then I feel he deserves. You need to at least mention Galileo who set the groundwork, he was quite close to what Newton found but he was forced to stop by the Catholic Church.

Koodz: Lyme disease isn't real anymore? My nephew will be relieved. It farked up most of his childhood.

Lyme disease is a real thing. Chronic Lyme Disease is not. They are not the same thing - one is a dubious, unproven despite 20 years of research diagnosis that is used to sell expensive and unnecessary procedures, and long-term antibiotics strong enough to require an implanted central line for more than a year -provided by the very same doctor that diagnosed you.

Because the various specialty physician colleges, the CDC, the NIH, and others, including the International Infectious Disease Society and Infectious Disease Society of America, have refused to play nicely with quacks, they created their own "specialty", the "Lyme Literate MD"

Pompous misinformation is no way to go through life son.

paramedic(and aspiring nurse) =\= Doctor(and much less expert in contagious diseases)

The term "chronic Lyme disease" (CLD) is very confusing...experts in this field do not support its use
http://www.cdc.gov/lyme/postLDS/
Although often called "chronic Lyme disease," this condition is properly known as "Post-treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome" (PTLDS)

It may be over indulged, or mis-defined, mistreated, or what have you, but it does not necessitate it not existing.  Same reason ADD and ADHD and Aspergers are still real conditions to some extent.

If you want to be respected, you should try not shooting your mouth off like a pompous asshole when it's pretty damn clear you have no idea what you're talking about.

If being a pompous asshole is your goal, then by all means, continue.  The more people that know you're an ass-hat the better.

Wow, you're trolling HARD tonight. I applaud you for your commitment to insult me. Unfortunately for your argument, I never made an appeal to my profession as a claim to authority. On the other hand, I can listen to actual experts in their field. Like the Infectious Disease Society of America. Or, ya know, their actual position statement on the matter. Since I doubt you'll click either link, I'll screenshot it for you.

i.imgur.com

Do you see that, right there? The statement which points out that "Chronic Lyme Disease" is neither Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome, NOR what it is claimed to be by so-caleld "Lyme Literate MDs?"

Your own link from the NIH doesn't even say what you say it does. In fact, it says the EXACT OPPOSITE of what you claim.

i.imgur.com

Even the CDC link you posted doesn't say what you apparently think it does.

omeganuepsilon: It may be over indulged, or mis-defined, mistreated, or what have you, but it does not necessitate it not existing.  Same reason ADD and ADHD and Aspergers are still real conditions to some extent.

Chronic Lyme Disease DOES NOT EXIST. It is a pseudoscientific label used by quacks to rip people off. This is not me as a Paramedic saying this. These are actual experts in infectious disease saying this, after decades of research on the matter.

Lumping it in there with actual psychiatric diagnosi which have empirically and scientifically been defined and identified is awesome, too.

omeganuepsilon: If you want to be respected, you should try not shooting your mouth off like a pompous asshole when it's pretty damn clear you have no idea what you're talking about.

Well, in this case, we know you have not the slightest idea what you're talking about either. (again, an actual physician) But please, continue "to show people how I'm such a pompous asshole" for standing up to people who not only take the money of those with real medical issues, mislead them through fraudulent or unproven tests, and offer them false hope while performing actual medical procedures that can irreversibly harm them - like giving year-long courses of vancomycin therapies. (Not a physician, rather the New England Journal of Medicine)

You're such a spot-on guy for doing so.

omeganuepsilon: If being a pompous asshole is your goal, then by all means, continue.  The more people that know you're an ass-hat the better.

You know, you'd probably cut off your nose if you could spite your face, omega. Then again, I'm not the one defending something that fits the basic definition of quackery in an attempt to one-up another person on FARK.

2013-07-06 03:47:10 AM
I think the point where you find yourself defending outright fraud, victimization and quackery in an attempt to make someone look bad and/or upset someone on the internet is the point where...

Seriously. I get that you hate me, but really? This is what you stoop to?

You have severe issues.

hardinparamedic: Well, in this case, we know you have not the slightest idea what you're talking about either.

I was talking about how it is a colloquial name for a real condition that gets misused and is now therefore avoided. (in otherwords: learn to read, dipshiat)

I was not laying down absolutes about how it doesn't exist at all:

hardinparamedic: Lyme disease is a real thing. Chronic Lyme Disease is not.

But keep farking that chicken Nurse(wannabe) Professor Dr. Butthurt MD.

No. You jumped at a chance to insult me while actually demonstrating you don't know what you're talking about. And then you're trying to claim you "got me upset" because I provided evidence you have no idea what you're talking about.

Because it's not.

PTLDS is actually demonstrated by evidence and clinical studies. It is a completely separate concept from "Chronic Lyme Disease". Had you actually read your own links, you'd have discovered that the later is a sham diagnosis applied to people who may or may not be demonstrating PTLDS, using tests which are neither FDA Approved or regulated, by private labs which have immense financial interest in dealing with self-proclaimed "LLMD" practices. Very few people use it "colloquially" as you claim, if at all.

omeganuepsilon: But keep farking that chicken Nurse(wannabe) Professor Dr. Butthurt MD.

Wait, I got this one!

omeganuepsilon:If being a pompous asshole is your goal, then by all means, continue.  The more people that know you're an ass-hat the better.

At any rate, I actually linked position statements from organizations which are considered the definitive source for Infectious Disease in America, the New England Journal of Medicine, and well known skeptical Physicians and their research into the matter. Nothing of my own original research or work.

But please continue to toss around personal insults, Doctor Omeganuepsilon.

You're not an anti-vaxxer or an autism denialist/psueoscience promoter, as far as I know.

You have some rather odd theories on the existence of ASDs and diseases which are typically associated with them, it seems, but that's another topic for another day.

But, you come off as a psuedoscientific quack-champion when you try to defend things like this. Seriously, I get that you honestly hate me, and that you want to show me up, and I'm sure you'll get the chance to do so many times on FARK in the future, but really - pick your battles, man.

Bah, nevermind, I give up, instead I'll just post the exact same concept as the other thread:

hardinparamedic: omeganuepsilon: That is not the claim you made before.  You have a very very bad habit of stating vague misleading absolutes and get pissy when you're confronted with facts.  If you can't take the heat, maybe stop talking directly out of your ass.

You know what? You're absolutely right. I should have been more clear the Boobies on that.

You have my apologies. I'll be more careful in the future. I appreciate you keeping me honest.

omeganuepsilon: Do you not grasp the operative part of that?

I think you're assuming I actually think you intended to defend something that is like that. I don't think that. You're far better, and more intelligent than that. You've also never demonstrated being that way.

I honestly don't think you did. I honestly - and honestly, I have a lot of respect for you, despite the fact you are an everliving thorn in my side a lot for sticking to things to the end - think you made that post because you thought I was trying to talk about something I had no qualification or backing to talk about. I honestly think you had honest intentions for posting what you did.

And to be quite frank with you, there is a personal reason I tend to be an asshole about things like Anti-vaccination, Cancer Quackery, and Ripping off Victims while giving them wrong/fraudulent diagnosi. I've been following skeptical physician bloggers and places like Ratbags and Quackwatch since 2007 because of this reason.  To be honest with you, if you don't keep abreast of what goes on in Alt-Med or Psuedoscience/Anti-Pseudoscience circles, the average person would never even hear the terms "Chronic Lyme Disease" or "LLMD" unless they fell victim to one. And it would be very easy to confuse the language used by these "doctors" (and I use that term loosely, since many of them are in league with naturopaths and others) with an actual clinical condition like PTLDS.

2013-07-06 04:45:11 AM
I understand completely. I even feel the same.  I have a thing against all that as well as people who make those sorts of absolutes on the fly, especially when they sound abrasive.

If Kood did fall victim, it'd be the better route to explain rather than denigrate. IMO, that's how it came off.

I didn't mean to come off that way, and I apologize for doing so if I did. It wasn't an intentional denigration.

I thought Paracelsus was better known as an alchemist than a doctor.
Maybe one day we'll have a discussion about the differences between faith, alchemy and science.
