I'm not sure which half of that sentence is scarier

In the spring and early summer of 1938 during Japan's invasion of China, the atrocities and hardships inflicted aroused sympathy in the U.S., such that many communities attempted to raise funds to help Chinese victims. It was also a time of many floods in China, thus intensifying the feelings of sorrow for the nation.

It's like this weird, psuedointellectual masturbation effort where he ended up just flaccid and frustrated.

People like to think that people who do horrible things are somehow different than they are. It's not who you are, but what you do.

Pretty kinky for an English professor. But if he really wants to get his nuts in a twist he should work at the animal shelter.

Yes, the people who commit crimes against other people are bad. When a person willfully commits cruelty to animal they exhibit what utter cowards we can become and show the terrifying need that some maniacs have to dominate others.

English prof should suck it up.

I'm not sure which is more likely, that you'd pee your pants in terror if you met even one of them people the author's interviewed face-to-face, or that you'd recognize a kindred spirit.  Either way I wouldn't want to ever meet you in real life.

2013-07-05 02:38:05 PM
I tried to explain, and many people were outraged by what I wrote. In one way or another, they were all saying: You think when you try to understand why men do evil things, you are going to learn something that might help prevent atrocities in the future. But really you are just excusing the perpetrators, justifying unjustifiable actions. The only thing you need to understand about evil is how to punish it.

Nowhere near this scale, but I think most people have everyday instances of this kind of response. It reflects, in my view, a false equivocation between explanation and exculpation. The two are different things. Excuses are explanations, but not all explanations are excuses. We can (attempt to) explain X behavior without being in support of or against it.

And I begin to wonder if I should keep reading.

Jebus, get over yourself. We ALL have it in us to do those things. Acting all shocked by such things only makes them seem MORE forbidden and darkly enticing. I fully recognize what a monster I could be if given enough power. That makes me more determined to make sure no one else gets that much power.

It's kind of funny that you'd post that as I was just discussing logical fallacies and how people throw them out at a whim non-stop  without thinking these days... maybe 30 minutes ago or so.

That was a textbook example of this one:

Black or White Fallacy
You presented two alternative states as the only possibilities, when in fact more possibilities exist. Also known as the false dilemma, this insidious tactic has the appearance of forming a logical argument, but under closer scrutiny it becomes evident that there are more possibilities than the either/or choice that is presented. Binary, black-or-white thinking doesn't allow for the many different variables, conditions, and contexts in which there would exist more than just the two possibilities put forth. It frames the argument misleadingly and obscures rational, honest debate.

he's a journalist.  he's not doing much more than asking them questions and writing about it.

imagine what it's like to actually do something for these people.  like their lawyers at an international tribunal.

but, whatever you do for evil, here is the question to answer: is the function of of your office more important than the individual acts of this one person.

many will argue that even the most evil deserve a legal defense.  the purpose of law is to be fair, which requires a defense.  therefore, even when representing evil, the office that represents evil does more good because justice is more important than one person.

so, this journalist should just ask, is there any purpose to his office?  does it justify sitting through a conversation with evil?

Btw, why are so many people assuming he's writing to tell us about something he won't tell us about? He just published a book about it. Read to the end of the article:

James Dawes is a professor of English at Macalester College and director of its Program in Human Rights and Humanitarianism. He is the author, most recently, of Evil Men, just published by Harvard University Press.

it is not surprising what human animals will do when completely unfettered.

You know what this article is?  The text equivalent to one of those YouTube reaction videos.  "I won't show you the disgusting facts, but I'll show you my face as I hear the disgusting facts."  I realize that the author was saying much more than that, but that's the image I couldn't shake while reading the article.
