TFA: In Hollywood, a black man in the Oval Office meant the nation was in crisis; make of that what you will.

Isn't any movie which involves a president of any race generally about the nation in crisis?  You don't really cast a "President of the United States" unless its about some sort of crisis.

FTFA:  (In Hollywood, a black man in the Oval Office meant the nation was in crisis; make of that what you will.)

That's just dumb. Has there ever been an action movie that features the President that DIDN'T involve a crisis? That's the entire point of action movies! There's a crisis! Even romantic comedies featuring the President, like Dave, feature the nation in crisis. Even full blown comedies like The Naked Gun do it. THAT'S the point of having the President in the movie. Presidents are there to deal with crises. Otherwise, nobody cares.

Didn't RTFA but am responding to subby's pretty cool headline here.  I don't give a shiat what the ethnic background or sex someone is for president of this country. I don't care of he or she is gay. It doesn't matter one bit.  Just want a good damn leader, that's all.

Seriously.

Moral crises are still crises.  Dave, Primary Colors, Welcome to Mooseport, etc.  Moral dilemmas about what a president should and shouldn't do, and how it affects the individual and the country

Good luck with that, that being said I would of course like that too but I'm not going to hold my breath. Don't get me wrong, I think overall Obama has been a better President than Bush but that wasn't a high bar to clear. It would be nice if he hadn't been OK with continuing the status quo on many things. >.> Since this isn't a politics thread I wont go into specifics but it would be also nice if the American public had a basic understanding of the government. By and large they don't really if you look at the numbers, sure we vote for a President but Congress is much more important in my opinion since it in theory should embody us as a nation working together for the good of the nation. Yet American's don't give Congressional elections the same importance as President elections which leads to fringe groups like the Tea Party hijacking things.

Also because Congress holds the purse strings, and thus they make the budget/etc. All Obama can really do is campaign for a vision to the American public, something I wish he had done more of with science and education. Which in my opinion he hasn't really done, also pushing for people to be educating and then cutting science funding in your budget proposal? Ugh.

I thought this was accurately describing Obama as a fake black president. His mother is white, so he isn't actually black. Traditionally people take the race of their mother. To me being the first mixed race president is more of a triumph than being 100% black.

People tend to take the race of whoever will get them more benefits and free passes.

Yes, the former Ramon Estevez is such a person but his character isn't:  President Bartlet is at least half WASP, his father's ancestors hailing from Massachusetts since before the founding of the country, and his mother is Catholic but not specified as Latina AFAIK.

I've never heard that before, is that a thing?  I'm Caucasian on both sides of my family (Australian and Irish)... I've always associated my behavior moreso with my father (Irish).  Maybe its because I'm male, but I've always seen males associate themselves more with their fathers.

My wife comes from Italian heratige on her mother's side and some mix of English/European on her fathers.  She is very, very much more like her mother.

I always associated it with gender.  But its an interesting thing to think about.

And yeah, this is all anecdotal and not really dealing with "race" as we define it.

And theoretically, Ramon Estevez is not "Latino" either, since he's from Spain, not Latin America. He's Hispanic though.

Could very well just be a Southern thing. Not sure how it's like elsewhere. My mother was predominately Cherokee so I don't associate as being Caucasian even though my Dad's family is Irish. I have more of the Native American build, and even have Cherokee Fingers (double-jointed in every finger). Plus a good day in the sun, and I'm as dark as a Native. So, to answer your question, not really sure if it's a global thing or a region-based thing.
